A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

HIIT or 'High Intensity Interval Training' is a type of training that is for everybody of all fitness levels, from the very beginners to the well rehearsed fitness enthusiasts.
HIIT effectively means doing an exercise at between 80-100% intensity (so really going for it) for a set duration/interval and then having a rest for a set duration/interval. Then simply repeat this for as many 'intervals' as you like. Below are three examples of HIIT workouts, ranging from beginner level to advanced. The main difference between difficulty levels in HIIT is the ratio between exercise time and rest time, as demonstrated in the below examples.
HIIT offers many health and fitness benefits as explained in the picture below. Many fitness professionals and personal trainers swear by HIIT because it offers incredible results but is also extremely time efficient and can be done anywhere, anytime. Even 4 minute workouts have been proven to give results due to the high intensity of HIIT.
HIIT is not only a favourite for fitness professionals and enthusiasts, but also for many celebrities and people in the public eye. Their strict work and travel schedules make it difficult for them to consistently go to a gym or find an entire hour a day to workout. HIIT offers them the results they need to keep in shape and healthy, whilst fitting around their lifestyle and constraints.
HIIT training is incredibly efficient compared to other forms of cardio and training as it burns more calories in less time. However the three main challenges people experience are;
These three factors can ironically make an efficient workout extremely inefficient. Therefore it was clear to us that if these three factors could be eliminated from the process and all that was left was the workout itself, HIIT would become more accessible to more people and the benefits would be seen across the board. Enter... HIITMAT.
Hiitmat is a new fitness mat that has integrated technology and communicates with a custom built mobile application in order to track, record and guide your workout. The mat is an answer to the challenges many people face with HIIT and makes HIIT workouts available and accessible to everyone.
With both the mat and app patent pending, HIITMAT offers something completely unique to anything else on the market; a complete solution to HIIT.
How does it work?
HIITMAT has in-built sensors and these are used to record reptitions of each exercise and each interval. The app tells the mat which sensors to activate based on the exercise being performed. The app also guides the user on where to place their hands and feet during each exercise, something that not only allows the reps to be counted, but also helps the user maintain good form throughout the workout.
The app also allows the user to connect their smartwatch, enabling them to monitor and record their heart rate during each interval, as well as calories burned. Additional connections mean that the user is able to connect their headphones and listen to their favourite playlist whilst also receiving audio cues from the app, meaning all focus is on the workout.
The 5 Steps of HIITMAT
The Mat is the next generation fitness mat. It is the perfect platform for you to achieve your fitness goals in any location of your choice with whatever time you have. When designing HIITMAT we wanted to create a platform that removes the inconveniences of HIIT, but leaves what really matters… the effort.
Material - After extensive testing we found what we believe the be the optimal amount of padding. This provides enough cushion and sturdiness to make the workout comfortable, whilst keeping the mat lightweight and easily portable. The material is also anti-slip and anti-bacterial for maximum safety and hygiene.
Pressure Sensors - Each zone of the mat is mapped with groups of pressure sensors that communicate with our custom built app, enabling it to track and record every rep you do. Each exercise is unique and the app recognises this, meaning that with each new exercise the app knows exactly which sensors in the mat to activate. The user is then guided to the relevant zones for you to HIIT.
Zonal Lighting - To provide guidance throughout the workout, we have integrated zonal lighting. The app instructs which zones to illuminate based on which exercise is being performed. Perfect for studio classes and workouts.
Wireless Connection - The mat connects to the app via bluetooth meaning no hassle when using a new or different device. Simply pair, place on the dock and get going.
Docking Station - The dock powers the mat using rechargeable batteries and has been designed to comfortably support any iPhone, android or tablet at the perfect angle for optimum visability.
Portability - This is one of HIITMAT's most unique features. The mat has been designed to accommodate anyone of any size, but folds away to the size of a single zone. This in turn fits perfectly in our bespoke sleeve, meaning you can take HIITMAT with you anywhere with ease.
The HIITMAT app is effectively your HIIT personal trainer (PT). No more wasting time thinking of exercises, no more wondering whether your fitness and performance is improving and no more excuses not to workout. In its simplest form; step on, select workout... and exercise.
Login - Create your own login details or simply use Facebook or Google login.
Profile - Your very own profile allows you to create bespoke settings and view all statistics from all of your workouts to allow you to view and monitor your performance and progress.
Create Your Own Workout - Create completely unique workouts by building from a database of exercises. Tweaking your number of intervals, interval time & rest time enables you to create a workout specific to your level and needs.
Random - Got a quick 15 minutes? Select 'random' and get going straight away with a workout generated for you based on your profile information and previous workout statistics.
Previous & Saved Workouts - Every workout is saved into your profile, allowing you to look back at all your history. You can also save any workout to your Saved Folder, meaning you can decide on your workouts in your downtime and easily locate them when you're ready to exercise.
Workout - With all necessary information, the workout page guides you through your workout whilst also monitoring and recording important performance indicators such as your heart rate and rep count.
Bluetooth - Bluetooth connection allows you to connect your SmartWatch and record your heart rate and calories burned on the app. You can also connect your headphones and listen to your favourite playlist whilst getting audio cues from the app.
Workout Summary - Allows you to review the overview of your workout performance as well as specific detail on each exercise and interval, enabling you to compare against your goals and previous workouts.
Ambassador & Workout Library - Select from a library of workouts designed by both our ambassadors and personal training team. There are workouts for all muscle groups and difficulty levels meaning that there is something for everyone.
When developing the sleeve, our designers were given two important points upon which to focus.... functionality & design.
Functionality - The mat slides seamlessly in and out of the sleeve whilst maintaining a snug fit to keep shape and style. There is also a separate pocket for the dock, making the entire packing/unpacking process quick and easy. A shoulder strap means that HIITMAT can go with you, everywhere.
Design - The design mirrors the ultra-modern, yet simple and stylish, feel of the mat itself. Fitness, lifestyle and fashion all fit hand in hand in today's market so we ensured we covered every angle.
A core goal of HIITMAT is that fitness should be available to everyone, everywhere, and we really believe our product does exactly that. HIITMAT is a tool that can be used by anyone and everyone to achieve their fitness goals, wherever they may be and with whatever time they may have.
The mat and app are designed to accommodate anyone regardless of their fitness level or knowledge. If you know nothing, HIITMAT will guide you. If you know everything, HIITMAT will support you. Whether you've never tried a press-up, or you can do 100, HIITMAT is designed to push you to YOUR limit, no-one else's.
For the beginners, for the intermediates, for the advanced, it's for everyone.
A current undergrad at Bournemouth University and co-founder of Open shutter productions (Name to change), Josh was brought onboard with his business partner, Sarah, tasked with shooting, editing and producing the full kickstarter promo video. From day one Josh's work ethic was outstanding, always willing to put in the extra hours and dedication to get the right shot. There was never a "That will do" moment! Over the course of 3 days shooting, over 5 hours of raw footage was obtained, working around limited equipment and freak weather spells. It's Josh's real passion for his craft that helped us realise how right he was for the task, and his enthusiastic and friendly personality that made him a real joy to be around.
Also a current undergrad at Bournemouth University, and the second co-founder of Open shutter productions alongside Josh, Sarah integrated herself within he group straight away. A real professional to work with and great fun behind the scenes, Sarah made her very best to connect with a product that wasn't close to her own interests and helped us to realise missing points from the story that needed to be told. With a keen eye for detail, Sarah was the perfect person to take the scenes shot and then edit and animate to tell the story of HIITMAT.
With HIITMAT from day 1 DUKU are responsible for bringing the HIITMAT concept to life. Our main contact in DUKU was Andrew Aylesbury who has been a real help every step of the way, making the best efforts to deliver on any and all ideas that we had for the product. Where we fell short on ideas or hit a wall, Andrew and DUKU were there to provide a solution, not at any point sacrificing quality, functionality or the image of the brand. We thank them for taking the concept we had in our mind and putting it in front of us.
We met Hemel during our search for a London location for the Promo shoot. We had a very specific image in our minds of the vibe and scenery that we thought would fit the brand and the story, eventually coming across Hemel and his Location. Hemel was extremely helpful and welcoming, preparing the space for us to use so not to waste any time.
A last minute favour called in, Dom was our Drone pilot for the day of shooting in France. A great help gaining both footage for the promo and behind the scenes and a real maverick at the controls, especially when Dambusters is playing.
The Iceman to our Maverick, Anna was a massive help behind the scenes helping to prep each shot and coordinate team members. She was great fun for the entire day helping everyone to take away the stress of shooting by helping wherever was needed. A cushion fluffer professional and a walkie talkie wizard.
Our first designer on project HIITMAT, Alex took our original ideas for the app and developed them, making a BETA version possible. A real help in filling in the gaps that we were unable to think of and produce a design that resembles with the HIITMAT brand.
Our main App developer from the beginning, Sergey has taken the concept of the app and made it a reality. Within only a few months he managed to create a functional BETA, ready to be integrated with our Mat. A real problem solver and HIITing every deadline, Sergey was a pleasure to work with and professional in both his work ethic and deliverables.
A HUGE THANK YOU TO ALL INVOLVED & WE LOOK FORWARD TO WORKING WITH YOU ALL IN THE FUTURE AS WELL AS GROWING THE TEAM!
Risks and challenges
Risks - We fully understand that as with any new project, there are risks involved. We believe that the key to a successful campaign is identifying these risks and applying best practice and planning in order to mitigate them. Our careful planning, budgeting and forecasting has meant that we have delivered our plan so far exactly on budget.
Although we have our plan outlined and detailed, we understand that some things are out of our control. Although all suppliers and developers with whom we have so far worked have delivered on exactly what was agreed and promised, costs and times scales can sometimes overrun. To counter this, we will continue to check against regular milestones in order to identify and mitigate any risks associated with these factors. There is always a risk however that delays occur that we are forced to take into account and this could cause a time delay on the product's shipping.
In terms of finance, we already have funding for the final touches and the tooling for manufacture, meaning that the funds raised from Kickstarter will allow us to improve certain features ensuring the best possible product is ready to be shipped. As mentioned before, there is a chance that these costs could rise, however our budgeting and planning so far has come in exactly as forecasting and we therefore expect this to continue. We do also have some contingency in our funding for any overrun.
Challenges - We have worked effortlessly to get to where we are at today. The challenge is continuing this, which we are eager to do. In order to deliver the product in December we will need to follow our plan rigorously, but fully believe that we can do so. Situations always arise that can cause delays, but we have so far been able to tackle these to eliminate delay or minimise them at the very least.
We will regularly update everyone to ensure full transparency throughout the process.
