This is our story, this is our Dream, our Kickstarter! Luca De Marini explains you what this project, what Acchiappasogni is made of!
Introduction to the Augusta Universalis RPG setting by Marzio Morganti
Introduction to the Augusta Universalis RPG ruleset by Luca De Marini
Rome has not fallen as history taught us
It’s the year 2771 a.U.c. (ab Urbe condita - from the foundation of Rome, our 2018 AD), the Empire controls not only the entire Earth but also numerous other worlds, both inside and outside our solar system.
War cruisers travel for millions of kilometers using the Limes Orbitalis that artificially curves space-time from the orbit of distant planets.
The new syncretistic philosophy of the Logos has extinguished the religion wars.
A council of Caesars from all over the planet form the Imperial Senate, presided by a single Augustus, chosen by the previous emperor.
Most of the inhabitants of the Empire live in a utopia of social justice, progress, and peace.
... what could possibly go wrong ...?
“Milites”, to arms! Come together under the banner of the Roman Humanity!Wear your “Tecnolorica”, activate your “Systemata”... ready yourself for the impact! In the cold, sidereal landscapes, something sinister, terrifying, alien to this universe lurks... but we will defend the Empire from its fearsome enemies, or we will die trying!
In Augusta Universalis you play as elite cyborgs called “Praetorians”, wearing exceptionally upgraded and expensive “Systemata” (biomechanical enhancements), who are able to transform themselves in a stunning power armor!
You will face extraordinary fights and exploratory “Missiones” on distant and unknown planets.
You will investigate the mysteries of alien civilizations that have disappeared from eons, and face the threat of the terrifying “Dark Thrones”, nightmarish creatures that bring death and destruction from the outside galaxy. You will defend the Empire, both from the political threats that tear it apart from the inside and from the enemies, trying to destroy it from the outside.
Are you ready to travel beyond the known stars for the greatest glory of Rome?
Augusta Universalis is a complete roleplaying game, with a rich and evocative science fiction setting and fast rules, focused on the interpretation and full customization of the character.
If the project will be successful, we will be able to create a book of about 300 pages, as well as an extra volume full of exclusives for your eyes only.
For the Players:
- Five different Guardiae: to which Guard and Imperator will you swear loyalty?
- Five different Ordines: what training have you overcome to become a Praetorian?
- Endless ways to personalize your Tecnolorica (the incredible cybernetic armor of the Praetorians)!
For the Narrator:
- Clear and easy to understand gaming mechanics.
- The “Syncrogram”, a useful tool for the Demiurge (Game Master / Narrator) to manage every “Missio” (Mission) of his or her players.
- At least one complete adventure to start running right away!
- A new science-fiction setting: a suggestive and in-depth romanpunk “Uchronia”.
- Only one manual needed, which includes setting and the complete game system.
- A first-rate narrative corpus, with many exciting and suggestive stories, to help you immerse yourself in the world of Augusta Universalis!
- A solid ruleset, based on the Dark Destiny 2 engine, the same of the already successful The Nights of Nibiru (soon to be translated into English, too).
Awarded with lots of enthusiastic reviews, Dark Destiny 2 has proven to be able to involve players like never before.
It is perfect for both newbies, experienced players, and Narrators alike.
With Augusta Universalis you will experience hours and hours of adventurous entertainment!
Although the Empire appears to be a beacon of civilization, since the death of the Heraclius Comnenus Augustus everything has gone wrong, and the War of the Eagles divides the age-old unity of the imperial crowns.
The very rich and powerful Byzantium has in fact allied itself with the Union of the Soviet Tsarist Empires and wants to give the Basileia (“Queen”), Anastasia Comnena Heracliades, the supreme throne.
From the other side, the very young Livia Comnena Akiko Augusta, adopted daughter of Heraclius and a native of the Chrysanthemum Empire, has joined with the Holy Roman Empire and its “technotheocracy” to defend her right to rule.
The conflict for the Imperial throne bloodies the borders between Europe and Asia with a ruthlessness that leaves terrified all the other Caesars of Earth.
On this tumultuous and unpredictable situation, the Praetorians (portrayed by the players) act as elected bodyguards and elite soldiers of Caesars and Augusti.
Their opponents? Unspeakable cosmic horrors, hostile and threatening alien species, enemies of the Empire and crazy sects of worshippers of the Dark Thrones, and many, many more.
Five initial factions to choose from and to serve: Rome, Byzantium, the Holy Roman Empire, the Union of the Soviet Tsarist Empires and the Africa Australis of the Zulu Federation.
Five Orders that train the most capable Milites: the warriors of Ordo Martis, the explorers of Ordo Dianae, the diplomats of Ordo Mercurii, the secret services of Ordo Plutonis and the scientist-philosophers of Ordo Minervae.
Armed with their Tecnolorica, the enhanced exoskeleton that makes them an anathema of destruction, and totally customizable thanks to Systemata, the Praetorians are ready to unleash the fury of the Empire against the enemies of Rome!
In addition, each Praetorian will be able to choose between Levis (light), Media (“medium”) or Gravis (“heavy”) classes of Technolorica, changing their resources and gameplay in the deep.
With the Dark Destiny 2 system you will deepen the biomechanical psyche of your Praetorian in the eternal struggle between machine and flesh, facing the most risky Missiones in an attempt to stay human.
This is despite the flames of the destruction of the War of the Eagles between Rome and Byzantium, which for the first time breaks the unity of intentions and the common leap of greatness of Roman Humanity.
Not only combat ...
The setting has many hints to involve the characters in obscure and mysterious investigations, or push them through the mesh of poisonous and lethal political intrigues. When they are not in combat mode, the Pretorians may appear as normal humans, with just a beautiful and “perfect” appearance.
Augusta Universalis was written by Marzio Morganti, a scholar of ancient and medieval history and passionate about military history, to convey a sense of realism and identification as strong as possible.
The game mixes real historical elements with free twists and strong sci-fi elements.
You will find yourself facing Missiones of many different natures, and you will always have new incentives to move forward!
Augusta Universalis uses the Dark Destiny 2 engine, the same as The Night’s of Nibiru!
It’s a game system designed to help the Narrator (here called Demiurge) in his task of managing and experiencing wonderful adventures together with other Players, who can easily identify with their respective characters.
The Augusta Universalis engine is a rapid system, which focuses on the description of actions and scenic situations inside and outside the combat. Players will have actual advantages derived from their descriptions and will be encouraged to make the game more enjoyable and immersive for themselves and for everyone else.
You will have at your disposal a single-sided form for your Character plus the Tabula Systemis, another A4-size sheet on which you will manage the Systemata, the Tecnolorica biomechanical components, fully customizable and home printable on poker format cards.
Everything works with tests based on three key questions: “what do you do?” (the player chooses the Peritia, the skill), “how you do it?” (the Demurge chooses an appropriate Virtus, an attribute, based on the description given by the player), and “why you do it?” (the player can use emotional, spiritual and background resources to obtain many different kinds of bonuses).
During a fight, the typical Emblems of Dark Destiny 2 will help you to immediately duplicate any special effect you can dream of!
Face the inner conflicts of your Character and discover the real reasons that drive him to act! Transform your Tecnolorica, change Assectum, and unleash the power of your Systemata to get into the action and experience amazing adventures!

Risks and challenges
Creating a work of the caliber of Augusta Universalis, for Acchiappasogni, was truly a titanic undertaking which required not only a huge passion and a great commitment on the part of all the participants in the project but also a high-level economic investment.
A 300-page, full-color manual in A4 format rich of high-quality illustrations does not come cheap! In all likelihood, this is the most challenging project we have ever faced together with Nights of Nibiru.
Making an RPG like this means involving a lot of professionals. In our case, in addition to the authors, there was the work of the talented editor Guy Edward Larke, of the illustrators Fabio Porfidia and Gaetano Carlucci, the composition of the Original Soundtrack by Sonor Village, which will include not only a simple main theme but a series of tracks usable in the game in the most disparate situations, from combat to tragedy!
Furthermore, we want to reward our financiers with exclusives that will be delivered only to them and to nobody else. An extra volume full of EXCLUSIVE contents will be translated as well. The more stretch goals we can unlock, the more contents of this additional volume, exclusive to supporters!
Those who know Acchiappasogni know that our association is synonymous with support and guarantee the development of future content.
We already created for you a Quickstart Guide that uses the same graphics and layout that you can expect from the finished product and we are ready for the challenge! Now, all we have to do is push on the accelerator and do our best! Thanks to Kickstarter you have the opportunity to help us on the front line.
