WFMU and Billboards - a match made in heaven!

If by "heaven," you mean the westbound side of Route 280 in Newark, NJ.

The idea of a WFMU billboard emerged from the June 28, 2017 episode of WFMU's long-running stunt radio program Seven Second Delay, hosted by human zinger factory Andy Breckman and his only friend, WFMU Station Manager Ken Freedman. This Kickstarter campaign picks up where that show left off. We want your suggestions, your votes for the ideas shown on this page, and of course the money needed to pull this off.

Email us at: billboard@wfmu.org with ideas, suggestions and votes, AFTER you pledge. Or, you can do it in the opposite order.

If you're a regular WFMU listener, you already know the deal. We're a fully listener-supported freeform radio station perpetually short on cash but long on ideas and innovations, and staffed deep with a world-class roster of idiosyncratic DJ's. We need your help spreading the word about our li'l magic factory. The plan is to rent an affordable and humongous 14' by 48' billboard visible from the westbound lanes of Route 280, Newark, NJ, a mere 8 miles west of our Jersey City home. Seventy-five thousand commuters drive by this billboard every day. During the inevitable bumper-to-bumper crawl, countless motorists will be mesmerized by our billboard's radiant skyline dominance.

We want to find the WFMU listeners among them. Some of them might already be WFMU listeners and not even know it yet. We want to straighten out that problem by making them reach for the dial and find a place where adventurous radio is alive and well.

With the recent announcement of the new WFMU Wake with Clay Pigeon morning show, the timing couldn't be better. Our hope is to tap into the Garden State's highways and byways to find new listeners who might want to get to know us.

Will you help us with this endeavor? It won't take much. To get this billboard up and running we'll need $5,000. If we make that goal, we may add stretch goals to keep the billboard up for longer, or use a second or third billboard design, or purchase new billboards.

Check out the rewards, and let us know your vote, or pitch a new billboard idea to Ken and Andy by emailing them at billboard@wfmu.org

Risks and challenges

This project can only succeed if we get the funds to pay for the billboard rental, and the production and installation of the actual billboard art. If we don't make $5000 by the deadline, your pledge will not be charged to you. So, its up to all of us to spread the word so we can make this billboard dream a reality.
