All works commissioned for the Calder Quartet
We have been commissioning new works for the string quartet for the past ten years. To date we have commissioned and premiered 30 works for string quartet and this project will feature 12 of these works. Helping composers realize their musical dreams is one of the most meaningful things we do. There is nothing like putting your heart into understanding a fresh score and working one-on-one with a composer to find the meaning beyond the page. This process informs all of our work across all genres.
These composers are some of the most exciting and promising young composers across the United States and around the world. This list of composers is a veritable who's who of emerging composers in our time and it's thrilling to watch the way they re-imagine the centuries-old art form of the string quartet and provide the fresh perspective for future centuries. These composers have gone on to achieve some of the highest accolades in composition today: commissions from the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Eighth Blackbird, Kronos Quartet, Bang-on-a-Can, Carnegie Hall, the Ojai Festival, as well the prestigious Gaudeamus prize, The Carlsbad Festival Composition Competition, the Pulitzer Prize Nomination, and the Prix di Rome.
Featured composers are Daniel Wohl, Tristan Perich, Andrew Norman, Christine Southworth, Ryan Carter, Nathan Davis, Jacob Cooper, Andy Akiho, Matt McBane, Fabian Svensson, Jason Treuting and Ted Hearne.
We already have support from the American Music Center's CAP grant and we are seeking an additional $10,000 will help us cover the remaining costs associated recording, releasing, and promoting these works. We are very grateful to all of our supporters including individuals, The Carlsbad Music Festival, MATA Festival, and UCSD's ArtPower who have helped us in commissioning these works.
Thank you in advance for your support of this project, the Calder Quartet, and the Calder Performing Arts Organization.
