I’ve spent almost 5 years of my life on a design team that creates things you interact with everyday - iOS 7, iLife, 3D Touch, iOS 9, the new look of Siri, and more. When creating new features and showing my ideas to others, I did so with animation. Instead of designing static layouts and verbally explaining how they worked, I showed my ideas in motion.

Animation allows you to discover solutions that are often missed with Photoshop driven design. It’s the reason why so many cutting edge interfaces are powered by motion.

What Exactly is Motion Design?

A common misunderstanding is that animation is a gloss layer, something added to a design after everything else is completed. You may be thinking:

“Oh yeah, I’ve seen those bouncing buttons. Not sure it’s really right for us.”

“I have a lot of code to write just get this app functional, spending hours on this fancy animation is a the bottom of my list.”

So, is it really just fun loading animations and bouncing buttons? Not at all! Motion Design is not just about animation. It is engrained in the UX/UI process. An animation has to mean something.

The idea is spreading. Apple, Google, Netflix, Uber and many more innovative companies are aggressively hiring motion designers. They know that motion is the future of user interface design. The way your objects move is just as important as the visual look of the objects themselves.
