Hi, and thanks for checking out my project. My name is Millie, and I'm a graphic designer based in New York.
Ever had one of those crazy ideas that just won't let go? I thought of this unique scratch-off notecard concept in December of 2010, and now I'm asking for your help in funding this Kickstarter project to produce them.
The notecard is actually a card within a card.The 4" x 5" outer card is die-cut to hold a smaller, thicker card. One side of the smaller card features original art by the pattern-designer, Jessica Swift. The other side is a solid color with a rectangle of gold foil in the center. Scratch off the gold foil to reveal a message. When the message is revealed, the card becomes a lovely keepsake to keep on your desk or tuck in your wallet. The outer card is made from fine-quality Mohawk uncoated cover paper stock. The smaller card is 4-color print on heavy coated cardstock with a velvety-feeling matte varnish.
The messages vary; I selected classic quotables ranging from Coco Chanel, Mark Twain, and Gandhi, to saucy sayings that will lighten up your day. There's a bit of serendipity that's all part of the fun, but I've created themed collections that you can use for specific occasions, like birthdays.
How does it work? Imagine if telegrams and fortune cookies got married and had babies. What would you get? Colorful little goldengrams of goodness delivered right to your door. Scratch off the gold, reveal the message. How's that for instant win?
The artwork from this first series is by the fantastic Jessica Swift! She and I have worked before on other projects, and I knew her patterns would be perfect illustrations for this job. She kicked off her own pretty spectacular project last summer, and you can buy her rainboots right here!

Please Note: These cards are pretty finalized; all the patterns and quotes are selected for my first run. But keep in mind they're a work in progress, and I'll continue to tweak things a little bit. The final cards may look slightly different.

Yes, I have made regular working prototypes on my office printer and will have a preliminary run of actual samples come off press and photographed shortly. Stay tuned!
Funds will go toward producing my first large run of cards to fill rewards and perhaps sell on Etsy and to a couple of retailers who have expressed interest.
Those costs include hiring a proofreader, printing, shipping, and paying my fabulous artist, Jessica Swift.
If demand for these is high and I exceed my goal, I want to develop other related products I've created. I'd also love to bring these to market at this year's National Stationery Show in May and/or build a robust e-commerce website and offer subscriptions. Jim Coudal and his Field Notes Brand http://%3Ca%20href= are a big inspiration for me.
I know, I know! I'm the quintessential cobbler with no shoes in terms of my website. I suppose busy is a good thing, but I am fixing that.
I attended the School of Visual Arts andstarted my career interning at the design studio Poulin + Morris. In 1998 I was a Bea Feitler award recipient and spent the summer interning at Conde Nast's Allure magazine with David Sebbah at the helm as Creative Director. I went on to work at several magazines after graduation in 1999 including Martha Stewart Weddings and Real Simple.
In 2003 I started my own studio and co-published my own food magazine for five years, Dinnerwhere. I continue to work for magazines including Latina and ESPN High School on a project basis and work with other local small business and not-for-profits on various print and web-based jobs.
