When Zeke Yoder’s grandmother is bitten by a Genetically Modified Rat, the Amish teen is propelled into a chaotic future. From his Iowa farm, Zeke travels down hallucinatory highways and through elaborate rat tunnels to save his grandmother and find new land for his people. In a world of conspiracies and counter-conspiracies, and faced with the new government’s anti-Amish policies, Zeke is never quite sure who he can trust. In a series of adventures with mutants, cyborgs, robots, clones, and intelligent rodents, in a world changing so fast he can barely make sense of it, Zeke will be forced to question everything he has believed and the very nature of reality in the 21st century.
"Subtexts here run deep, which should gratify Beachy's regular readers, but like the adventure serials and video games it resembles, Zeke Yoder is at heart, as well as on its surface, good clean fun—albeit of a high order and set in the current American apocalypse."
Alvin Lu, Author of THE HELL SCREENS
There is a newly installed anti-human government and ferocious resistance to that government. There are journeys through elaborate rat tunnels, paranoid scientists in underground bunkers, solar-powered mutants with unconventional desires, and anti-technology terrorists who behead robots. There are love triangles and catastrophes. There are new kinds of consciousness and new kinds of meat. There are seedy streets in the decaying cities that crashed after the "new meat" boom.
"Something flapped past Zeke's face, swooped up behind him, and then landed on his shoulder. He plucked it off. It was a flexi-screen with a long message on it. The flexi-screen chirped. Zeke had seen flexi-screens before, but never one that seemed so … alive.
If you got a connect tell them i’m Looking for a computer. Tell your connect i’m looking for THAT computer that comes with a manual the computer girls use to change their eye color. It would do anything and it came with a manual. It had movie tube so you can watch free movies. Girls use it to time travel. It’s like a hologram computer. It can get anything in the world done.
You might want to be alone when you read this. Make sure that you are. Be extra sure."

THE PROJECT: What's the Money for?
I'm trying to raise the minimum necessary to pay my cover artist and my graphic designer, to pay for the Kindle e-book service, to do a small amount of advertising, and to print the first 100 copies of the book. And how about higher production values next time I make a video?
I've been writing pretty much my whole life. I've published four novels the traditional way, with another one coming out in the fall of 2017. This is my first experiment with self-publishing. I'm trying to cut out the middleman and create a professionally designed and edited book on my own, in the process developing a closer connection to my readers. My grandparents were Amish farmers. I grew up in Iowa, and I'm a graduate of the Iowa Writer's Workshop. I teach in the MFA in Writing Program at the University of San Francisco, but I live in San Diego, isn't that crazy? I've published fiction and nonfiction all over the place, from The New York Times Magazine to BOMB and the Chicago Review.
Risks and challenges
The risks are minimal to nonexistent. Yes, I could get run over by a bus between the time the funding period ends and the rewards get shipped out, and then maybe you'd never receive your book or T-shirt or be able to meet me for coffee. But the book is written and everybody I know who's read it, loves it. The cover's been designed. The publishing service is ready to go. The story might change you, sure, for the better or for the worse, but you'll have to read the book to find out.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
