UPDATE: At the time of writing, my first goal of £1,100 has been hit - which means that the album is definitely going ahead! A huge THANK YOU to everyone who's helped to make that happen!
Now we're onto my stretch goal of £1,500, which would enable me to hire a proper string quartet to play on my album. I really want this to happen, so let's see if we can get there!
About the album
"Distant figures... eight or nine out on the ice..."
"In the year of '94, I lost my dayglo dinosaur down at the fair."
"Want to get a man to love you? Just be deplorable..."
After four acclaimed six-song EPs, it's time to record my first full-length album - and my most ambitious one yet. Tales of lost polar explorers rub shoulders with songs about the merits of sewing one's own clothes, cursed West Midlands cities and a bird that flies into a window.
You can listen to my previous releases here:
And some of these new song titles might intrigue you:
1. The Crew of the HMS Terror
2. Collared Dove
3. Find Me in Hell
4. Sirens II
5. Dayglo Dinosaur
6. I'll Be Fine
7. I Do
8. And Sew
9. Raising The Dead!
10. Some Kind of Carthy
11. Vermillion Sands
12. Dead Nettles
13. The Sum of Which
I'm really excited about recording these songs, but I can't do it without your help! Twice as many songs as before means twice as much recording time, twice as much production... twice of everything, really! And I just don't have that kind of money lying around. Here's what your contributions would go towards:
Production: I'll need to pay my excellent sound engineer and producer Nick Siepmann a fair rate for putting it all together. I'll also be recording my piano parts on his family's Steinway, which is exciting!
Design: album art will be provided by Jacqueline Law, my long-suffering artist and mother, and Zim will be doing the digital design work.
Printing: I'm planning on getting 200 of these babies printed off to start with - more if the demand requires it!
Miscellaneous: travel, equipment, creating the rewards and all the multifarious little expenses associated with bringing an album into the world.
Because this is Kickstarter, if I don't hit my goal, I don't receive any of the money at all - it doesn't even leave your account. And I think that's important, because I want to give my backers the best possible album I can - there's no point in half measures!
On the other hand, if you help me to exceed my goal, there are quite a few exciting things that could happen:
Hiring a string quartet - I've always wanted to work with a string quartet, and they'd sound particularly effective on these new songs!
A lyrics booklet - lyrics are an incredibly important part of my songs, and it'd be great to give people another window into the mind of the lesser spotted Jess!
A music video - it would be fantastic to make another one like this!
Risks and challenges
Although I'm set on getting this album to you before the Christmas rush melts everyone's brains, my years of music experience have shown me that there are sometimes unavoidable delays in the recording process. If this happens, I'll be sure to let you know ASAP and give you a new timescale. I've been getting better over the years at estimating how long things will take, but you can't plan for everything, so I'll let you know if anything changes.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
