Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) manifests itself in countless forms. Despite it's portrayal in the media, many people with OCD are not necessarily compulsive hand washers and do not always need everything perfectly organized. In fact, many people actually fall into a category called "Purely Obsessional OCD", which greatly favors obsessive thoughts rather than the stereotypical compulsions. This is where I come in.
At the end of 2011 I was diagnosed with OCD and became... obsessed with the idea that there was a name for my persistent anxiety, inability to make a decision, perfectionism, and desire for control. I've become so fixated on the symptoms of OCD (surprise, surprise) that I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to develop a film around the psychological impact of the disorder... and so, this project was born.
So I asked myself... "What is the one thing that is out of our control?" The answer is death. As we grow up, we become accepting of time's power in the grand scheme of things... but still we long for something that will prevent our death from becoming the final chapter. Ghosts.
Somehow, spirits have gained control over the influence of time. This "upper hand" is absolutely fascinating to us. It fuels our hunger for ghost stories. But what happens when we are haunted by not only ghosts, but also our own mind?
In my film, the protagonist, of course, has OCD. When his childhood friend forces him to explore an abandoned warehouse, he fears that something bad will happen because, in trespassing, they are breaking the law. He becomes absolutely fixated on this wrong doing and soon realizes that he has been followed home by a spirit who he believes is determined to punish him for his unlawful behavior. The film will shed light on the purely obsessional form of OCD and explore the concept of control and lack thereof.
You may be asking: "Where is my money going?"
That is an excellent question! Being that I am shooting this movie on 16mm film, funding will go toward purchasing film and processing it. Unfortunately, film is an extremely expensive medium to work in. I am also using a special process called "bleach bypass", which gives the film an overall desaturated and contrasty look. I feel that this will help to convey the overall mood of my piece. This process also forces me to think about the cinematography on a much more complex level, helping me to further develop my skills and allowing me to explore the field that I hope to some day be a part of.
How does Kickstarter work?
As a contributor, you are playing a role in the production of my film. Any form of support is incredibly helpful, even if it means just spreading the word about my project to people who you feel may be interested in helping me out. By March 3rd, if I have reached (or surpassed) my goal, the money will be transferred to me so that I can begin production. If I haven't reached my goal by March 3rd, your account will NOT be charged.
