Are you New Music's biggest fan? Us too! Let's be fans together at the same time in the same place!
New Music Gathering is an annual conference dedicated to the performance, production, promotion, support and creation of new concert music. Organized by five working musicians—cofounders Lainie Fefferman, Daniel Felsenfeld, Mary Kouyoumdjian, Matt Marks and technical director Jascha Narveson—it simply aims to be a place to get interested people in a room together, talking. With concerts, lecture recitals, roundtable discussions, talks, composer-performer “speed dating,” a “therapy room” for consultations with industry professionals, New Music Gathering is both a conference in the traditional sense but also quite literally a collective place for things to grow, improve, solidify and above all get personal.
Our first year launched at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, under the theme of "Artist-Led Ensembles." Highlights included Claire Chase's keynote address; performances by Chase, Sarah Cahill, and The Living Earth Show; as well as an open rehearsal with the Kronos Quartet and pipa virtuoso Wu Man – with over 50 presenting acts and over 400 attendees in our first year.

This January of 2016, our second gathering will be hosted by the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, exploring the theme of "Communities," with special keynote speaker and music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Marin Alsop; headliners So Percussion, pianist Kathleen Supové, and Baltimore groups Lunar Ensemble and Sonar New Music Ensemble; and almost 100 presenting acts, almost doubling the community we were able to present last year.

- the Peabody Institute, as they are very generously donating their space (Thanks for believing in us, Peabody!)
Not convinced? Here are some inspiring words from some wonderful folks about last year's Gathering and the upcoming Gathering:
"..it was the panels and discussions that made the Gathering into something more than just another new-music festival, which are plentiful now...What the Gathering offered..was a glimpse at how that magic happens." - Allan Kozinn, in the The Wall Street Journal
"[T]he process is all about building community among composers, performers, and the audience, a community filled with the love that permeated every room we entered at The New Music Gathering. The take-away from all these presentations left many participants with a feeling of 'I can do this!'" - I Care if You Listen
“Peabody is proud and honored to host an exciting, new initiative in its second year, the New Music Gathering...what an exciting opportunity for Peabody and for Baltimore to welcome leading composers and performers from around the world to be immersed in the new ideas, provocative discussions, and compelling performances of today’s contemporary music community.” - Fred Bronstein, dean of the Peabody Institute

Risks and challenges
Our hopes and dreams...
New Music Gathering's greatest goal is to bring our new music community together. While it's a challenge to get all of these outstanding human beings from all over together under one roof, we hope to provide a platform for the incredible people in our field to share their thoughts and work and dreams in a spirit of optimism, adventure, and friendship. Your help would enable us to build that platform as large and strong and bright as we possibly can!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
