About this project
At Milk Sugar Love, we will serve delightfully delicious, hand-made ice cream created from grass-fed, organic dairy and local New Jersey produce. We want to reinterpret the traditional ice cream shop by creating unique, globally-influenced flavors such as sangria sorbet, cocoa nib and white chocolate salted cashew (check them out in our video!) and by giving all our creations a restaurant-worthy look.
We will make all our ice cream in-house and by hand using local, and whenever possible, organic ingredients. We can't wait to work with beautiful produce from the great organic farms found right here in New Jersey, including Cherry Grove Organic Farm, Emery's Berry Farm and Honey Brook Organic Farm. Using local and organic ingredients is just one way we will to look to contribute to our community through sustainable business practices.
We believe New Jersey is ready for an ice cream revolution and we want Milk Sugar Love to lead the charge with flavor-driven, locally-focused, incredibly delicious ice cream.
HOW DOES KICKSTARTER WORK?
Support us by clicking the "Back This Project" button on the right side of the screen. Enter your generous donation and select the appropriate reward. We have until February 14 to reach our goal. If we reach $20,000 by that day, then your card gets charged with the amount you selected and we ship the rewards you picked. If by February 14 we don't reach $20,000, then nobody's card gets charged and we can’t get churning.
WHY DO WE NEED THE MONEY?
We need an ice cream machine in order to start our business! In total, we need $65,000 of equipment, but we only need $20,000 for the most important piece, an ice cream batch freezer. We are planning to purchase an Emery Thompson batch freezer because the Thompson family has been building ice cream machines for over one hundred years. Their batch freezers are durable, long-lasting workhorses made right here in the United States.
We will be shipping all rewards through USPS. Track our progress as we get your rewards ready to ship by following us on twitter @MilkSugarLove. All rewards will ship by March 1, 2013. Pints and scoops will be redeemable once we start selling in-store or at farmer’s markets, so like our Facebook Page or follow us on Twitter to stay updated!
Here’s how to redeem your rewards:
1. CREATE a Kickstarter account: all it takes is an email address.
2. SIGN IN at Amazon.com - if you already have an account, you're all set. If not it only takes a moment.
3. PLEDGE what you are comfortable giving. We appreciate every dollar. If you find yourself wanting to help but unable to donate you can skip to the next step to help us spread the word. Your card will only be charged if we reach our full goal.
4. SHARE this with your friends, family, coworkers, neighbors, and whoever else crosses your path! Let everyone know you are a backer for Milk Sugar Love Creamery and Bakeshop!
Don't see a reward tier that works for you, or have an interest in investing directly or on a bigger scale? Please send Emma and Anthony an email at email@example.com to talk about options.
Risks and challenges
Our biggest challenge will be opening our storefront on time. We are in the process of applying for a bank loan. However, large commercial banks are hesitant to finance start-ups, especially retail food businesses. So we continue to save money from our full-time jobs and part-time custom cake business and pitch potential private lenders. And now we are reaching out to our friends and family and harnessing the power of the Internet to help us raise money for the one piece of equipment we can’t open our business without---an ice cream machine.
We have a projected storefront opening date of July 2, 2013, but even if we are not able to finish construction by that time, we still intend to start selling our ice cream by that date. We are targeting 2 farmer’s markets in Jersey City and 1 in Hoboken where we can sell our ice cream while construction continues. But only if your generosity enables us to reach our $20,000 Kickstarter goal!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
