About this project
What is WalletM8?
A great product is something that makes your life easier and helps you get things done. More importantly, a great product seamlessly fits into your everyday life. We see this everyday with smartphones, tablets, laptops, and many other electronic devices. Their portability helps us both create and consume content, increasing our productivity while on the go.
WalletM8 is a versatile all-in-one stand to complement your productive life. It's unique, patent-pending design allows you to hold up your smartphone, your tablet, your digital camera, and even multiple sheets of 8 ½ by 11 paper. Best of all, it’s just 2.0 millimeters thin and collapses into the size of a credit card to fit into your wallet so it's with you everywhere you go.
WalletM8 for your Smartphone
Have you ever had to watch a video with your phone lying flat on the table or needed something to hold up your phone so you can take a video? WalletM8 allows you to use your smartphone in portrait or landscape orientations at a variety of angles. You can watch videos, use it as a temporary dock at your desk, video chat your friends, or even use it as a phone tripod for some quick, hands-free video or pictures.
WalletM8 for your Tablet
Has your arm ever been tired from holding up an iPad for a full-length movie? WalletM8 is compatible with many popular tablets of all sizes. It can hold up smaller tablets like the Nexus 7, iPad Mini, or Samsung Note 8.0 in landscape and portrait orientations. For larger, tablets like the iPad 2, 3, 4, and Air or the Samsung 10.1, WalletM8 will allow you to view those tablets in the landscape orientation. You can use this to watch movies, type emails with an external keyboard, or use your tablet as a second monitor.
WalletM8 for your Digital Camera
Have you ever had to be the odd man out of a group picture because you were the one who needed to hold the camera and take it? The unique flat screw design at the top of WalletM8 allows it to be screwed into the bottom of many point-and-shoot digital cameras. The base can then be adjusted to a variety of angles so you have a true camera tripod that's always with you.
WalletM8 for Paper
Aren't your hands always full when you are cooking or doing homework? The last way WalletM8 will help you in your daily life is by holding up your sheets of paper. WalletM8 can hold anywhere from 1-20 sheets of 8 ½ by 11 paper in the portrait or landscape orientations. Let WalletM8 help you edit that essay, cook that recipe, or read that sheet music.
WalletM8 as a Promotional Product
While these features are all really great for consumers, we’d like to point out that WalletM8 is great for businesses and the corporate world as well. Many companies use promotional products or business cards featuring their name and logo, to network with potential clients. Let WalletM8 fulfill this role for you. The backside of WalletM8 features a 2.25 by 1.125 square inch area where we can print company names, logos, or business card information. We will work with you to get the color combinations you want to best promote you and your company. You’ll find our corporate backer pricing per unit, is competitive with pricing of many other promotional products that are commonly given away at conferences, career fairs, or trade shows. Further impress your clients with a branded WalletM8 that they will use on a daily basis. If you are interested in branded WalletM8s, please contact us through our website at http://www.walletm8.com/for-businesses/.
WalletM8 started it's life out as a gift card cut up with the idea of making a wallet-sized tripod for digital cameras. Since then, tweaks and changes were made with each successive prototype to increase functionality and strength of the device. This iterative engineering process has given birth to many small features that allow WalletM8 to hold a rigid shape when performing any of the functions it is capable of.
All of the WalletM8s shown in our video and pictures are all built on the design shown in the engineering drawings. We had multiple models 3D printed and painted into the colors we desired. This is why you may see some scratches in our pictures. Should our project get funded, the WalletM8s our backers will receive will be injection molded in the plastic color they elected so there is no painting involved.
Kelson is an electrical engineer who completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Hawaii and is pursuing a graduate degree from the University of Southern California. In his spare time, he likes traveling, trying new restaurants, and listening to KPOP. Kelson brings his CAD experience electrical and mechanical engineering to the table as well as his creative mind that is always trying to think of the next big thing.
Rayfe is an electrical engineer by training and enjoys product development. Rayfe completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Southern California and his graduate degree at Stanford University. While working in Los Angeles a few summers ago, Rayfe met Kelson and Wing and immediately found a shared passion for product entrepreneurship. When Rayfe is not working in the lab or doing research, he enjoys water polo, swimming, surfing, jazz music, and algorithmic trading.
Wing is a techie at heart who completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Southern California. Even with her busy schedule, she always finds time to travel (and eat) with her friends and family. Aside from eating all the good food in the world, she also enjoys hiking and photography. Working with Kelson & Rayfe on the "new and exciting", Wing brings her marketing, advertising, and graphic & web design experience to the team.
As you can see from the timeline, we are very close to making WalletM8 a product that's available to everyone. We have working prototypes and a manufacturer lined up. We are ready to move forward with production, and start putting WalletM8 into people's pockets. Now we need the help of the great Kickstarter community to help and make this a reality. Thank you for checking out our project!
Risks and challenges
While this is our first Kickstarter project, we are confident that we will be able to deliver WalletM8 to all of our backers. We have a great manufacturer who is ready to start injection mold tooling production if our project gets funded.
As you can see from the many pictures shown in the design section, WalletM8 has many small and complex features. However, with the 3D printed prototypes we have manufactured thus far, we have proven that the design of WalletM8 works.
After the injection molded tooling is created, our manufacturer sends us some samples made from the injection mold just to make sure the pieces are up to our design standards. We can then make any modifications if needed to ensure that the final WalletM8s you receive work as intended. Our schedule also has some time buffer built in to account for any unexpected challenges.
We know that with your help, we can make WalletM8 a reality.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
