October 1942, whilst the German armies have put their boot down and established firm control of the Western front, their counterparts on the Eastern front are kept very busy in the USSR. Some of them will soon be trapped in one of the larger Communist cities : Stalingrad.
Heroes of Stalingrad is the new standalone wargame by Devil Pig Games. Make use of the dynamic and strategic HEROES SYSTEM : TACTICAL SCALE and dive right into one of the most decisive battles of the Second World War. Play as your favourite Hero alongside your friendly troops during two-player games of 30 minutes or more. Perform heroic deeds of derring-do as seen in many War movies.

The area lies in ruins after heavy bombing by the Luftwaffe. Yet the Russians refuse to give up the city. Intense combat ensues for control of every room in so many buildings as they are taken, lost, retaken,... time and again. The Germans call it the Rattenkrieg, the war of the rats. Imagine charging infantry, exploding grenades, bursts of MG34 and DP28 machineguns, artillery and tanks releasing their deadly ordnance...
At night and during lulls in the battle, loudspeakers amplify the dreary propaganda messages as they relentlessly echo through the air in order to demoralize the enemy. For a brief period nothing seems to stir in the omnipresent rubble. A sniper takes aim and fires a crisp single shot... one enemy less in Stalingrad...
As the Nazi armies are prevailing in the West, Hitler launches an offensive in the opposite direction. It's an attempt to exploit the crude oil reserves of the Caucasus whilst weakening the Russians by blocking the Volga River and destroying military factories. All to be achieved well before the arrival of the Americans. The Germans advance quickly in the Don basin but then combat grinds down in August 1942, evolving towards a bitter fight for Stalingrad. As the Russians maintain a fierce and relentless resistance to prevent the fall of the symbolic city, the struggle becomes the most murderous urban battle of the Second World War.
Heroes of Stalingrad is played with the well renowned HEROES SYSTEM: TACTICAL SCALE that is recognized with an Origin’s Award (Best historical Boardgame of the year – 2015).
Whilst retaining a proper wargame feel with the necessary tactics, the HEROES SYSTEM: TACTICAL SCALE will allow you to simulate and fight small scale military conflicts with ease, aided by the game's speed and dynamics.
Loads of different scenarios can be played with a vast array of terrain, infantry, support units and light as well as heavy vehicles at your disposition. Most of the information needed to play is printed on the playing pieces and terrain tiles. No need to waste time browsing rule books or reference sheets as you guide your units to victory.
Compose your army with the recruitment tiles that will provide you with troops. Deploy your soldiers with whatever you deem needed to accomplish the upcoming mission. Reinforcements, grenades, heavy weapons, vehicles, ... Feel free to throw in a few Heroes, enhanced with character traits and consider some extra bonuses from high command.
Jump right in with the included scenarios that list preconstructed and equipped formations. Or let your imagination run free to create your own missions and armies. All troops and material have a clearly visible point value that will aid in balancing the opposing forces.
Every battle needs its heroes. Do not forget to recruit them as they come with crucial characteristics or weaponry that may well tip the balance of battle to your advantage. You definitely want that sniper or tank buster present on the board when their skills are required, don't you?
Stalingrad is an urban battlefield so expect it to be depicted as a city in ruins. The modular terrain tiles and terrain pieces can be placed in a myriad of combinations suitable for numerous different situations. The destroyed buildings and craters will serve as cover or present a perfect spot to ambush the enemy!
A good plan comes together without mishaps... or does it...? The action cards may well help you avert disaster or confirm that you indeed dominate the battlefield. Make good use of them at the right time to achieve your goals, keep that tank in play just a little longer or even save a soldier's life!
While the Russian HMG-1910 had settled quietly to take the German troops in a row, he was surprised to see a German Fire Group passes through the window and take them by surprise ... The Russian trap is over!
A simple Action card "Surprise!" played at the right time can change everything!
Heroes of Stalingrad is played over a series of Game Turns. Each Game Turn is divided into three phases:
- Order Phase: where you assign Order Tokens to your Units
- Activation Phase: where Units with Order Tokens move and attack
- Supply Phase: where unactivated Units may move
At the end of the Supply Phase, check to see if either side has won the scenario, or if you have reached the scenario's time limit. If not, start the next Game Turn.
During the Order Phase, both players assign their Order Tokens (Numbered, Special or Bluff) to their Units (the majority of them has a number hidden to your opponent). Only Units that have Order Tokens will be able to move and attack during the Activation Phase (the others will have a chance to act during the Supply Phase, so don't worry). You will activate them one by one depending of the number indicated on.
Special Order tokens can be activated before or after any other Order token.
The Bluff Order token does not activate the unit, its purpose is to trick your opponent.
During the Activation Phase, the players take turns activating their Units and taking actions. Normally, only Units marked with a Numbered or Special Order Token (not those with a Bluff Order Token) can take actions during this phase, but some Action Cards and Special Abilities may allow a Unit to act out of turn.
Every Unit with an Order Token (except the one with a Bluff Order Token) may take a Movement Action - to maneuver into a better position or claim an objective, or attack enemies by taking a Firing Action. You and your opponent will alternate, taking turns to activate one Unit at a time.
During this phase, Units that did not receive an Order Token (not counting Bluff Order Tokens) and do not have an Activated Marker may take a Movement Action. Some Special Abilities or other effects may even allow them to take other actions. Then the players get ready for the next Game Turn by switching the Initiative to the other side.
Zoom on a Special Ability: Assault
Only units that have the Assault special ability may engage an enemy lnfantry unit or vehicle in close combat.
This system and its scale are the very same as used in several of our other games: Heroes of Normandie (2014), Shadows over Normandie (2015) and Heroes of Black Reach (2018).
Heroes of Stalingrad is 100% compatible with all our other games that have the Heroes System: Tactical Scale in common. Even more variation in armies and terrain!

Shipping cost can be handled in the Pledge manager after the campaign is finished. The shipping costs are estimated, we should have the final ones before the end of the campaign.
Please take into account that all pledges that are confirmed AFTER closure of the Pledge manager will be sent from our principal hub at a later date. Due to the required extra handling this will entail a penalty (10€) and supplementary shipping cost.
We regret to inform you we can not deliver at P. O. boxes.
We reserve the right to refrain from shipping to certain countries/areas like Central and South America or Malaysia (alas, lots of parcels gone missing) or to destinations that are a tad “exotic” like Chad or Antarctica. Should you have placed a serious order anyhow from a country deemed too risky for good delivery we shall see to it you are 100% reimbursed.
Please understand that our only responsibility towards you is to send you the products you have confirmed in the Pledge manager.
If the goods need to be delivered outside the “Friendly Shipping” zone (EU, US, CA and AU) then you are responsible for any import taxes or other fees due to the authorities. You must, of course, provide us with a correct address and phone number and the delivery location must be normally accessible to mail services.
For the delivery at our office (IdF Friendly), you will have 30 days for the pick-up during our opening hours. We will try to be open at least one Saturday for those who cannot come during the opening hours. Often, we will be open the Thursday evening. If you don't come during these 30 days, we will send your package to the dispatch center and you will have to pay the shipping.
Risks and challenges
This is our 7th Kickstarter, for a game based on a system we know very well since we have developed, refined and published it ourselves.
Previous Kickstarters were badly influenced by their sheer size in the end, along with several unforeseen events. Since this caused annoying delays, we decided to conduct matters differently with this campaign.
Our goal is a well-handled, shorter campaign that in turn will be easier to develop.
That is why this campaign will have reduced content from previous campaigns, in order to limit risk.
- Limited content to avoid an explosion of development time required.
- A simplified project streamlines Production and makes the game faster to produce.
- Less parts in any given pledge speeds dispatching to the backers, and reduced the chance of errors.
The time deemed necessary before this project materializes has been closely examined based on the information from our suppliers whilst definitely taking any risks of delay into account. Additionally we had to consider the workload per team member, what quantity of material needs to be made and how far we have actually progressed already here and now. Unlike during our previous campaigns, we now have a freshly appointed project manager who took it upon herself to make a serious study about the time needed to accomplish the different tasks that lie ahead. Unfortunately all this doesn't guarantee a 100% correct delivery date. After all, that date is an ESTIMATE.
Last but not least, our communication must be improved from previous campaigns. In the past we let you down in this regard because it was outweighed by the development, manufacturing issues and dispatch complications of other projects. All this for several different games at once, mind you, which only made matters worse.
Without discussion, all pledges can be refunded up to 60 days before the games leave the factory. If reimbursement is requested any later than 15 days after this Kickstarter campaign has ended, a cost of 10% of the total price of goods ordered through this platform, will be withheld.
