Beneficial Shock! Magazine: Unconventional Cinematic Adventures.

As with all worthwhile things, the idea for this magazine emerged from a discussion between two disgruntled mates down the pub. A mutual love for movies paired with the desire to see more creative editorial expression, spurred these two friends to create Beneficial Shock!, inspired by—and dedicated to—unconventional cinematic adventures.

Beneficial Shock! is a new bi-annual magazine for film lovers and design enthusiasts, with accompanying screen based motion features that will champion progressive thinking from contemporary illustrators, graphic designers and photographers. Rather than your standard film magazine full of reviews, celebrity news and press images, Beneficial Shock! aims to use illustration, visual documentation and design in humorous and irreverent ways to expressively interpret film related content.

In short, film is just the beginning.

In each thematic issue we will explore a chosen topic, looking at its relationship to film in surprising and often unconventional ways.

Issue one: Food
We’ve chosen food as the theme for this first issue. Food doesn’t just fill our bellies, it is laboured over, passionately discussed and is the diverse glue that binds many families and communities together. But, as we’ll see, it is also on occasion used as the basis of alien artillery, stepped on, penetrated, stabbed and thrown. Oh, and lest we forget, we are food too.
Let the banquet begin!

With contributions from established illustrators, designers and writers alongside fresh new talent, issue 1 features work by Jay Wright, Dave Biskup, Eleanor Shakespeare, Gary Embury and Jakob Hinrichs lending their penmanship to features on surreal food in Roald Dahl films, food fights from east European art-house cinema and a theoretical treatise on the digestive process of Hitchcock's Psycho. Alongside these more meaty features are a bevvy of graphic novels, mock adverts and an abridged history of cinema's most humble snack: popcorn.

Magazine dimensions 280mm x 200mm (portrait), printed on mohawk eggshell white stock 260gsm cover/148 gsm text.

Looking ahead to Issue two: The Mind

Since the heady days of the Lumière brothers, film has played fast and loose with our notions of reality, prodding our subconscious with vibrant images and stealthily invading our dreams. And so, we'll be swapping the gut for the head in our next issue, as Beneficial Shock! takes a trip into the deepest and darkest recesses of the mind, exploring stories of wonder and weirdness as we see just how deep Alice's rabbit hole actually goes.

Looking further ahead
While we want the magazine to function as a standalone addition to the Independent publishing world, our far-reaching and grand ambitions for Beneficial Shock! are for it to act as a curatorial space for innovative work—aiming to push the boundaries of how illustration is traditionally commissioned and how a magazine can be one part of a more experiential engagement with content. Commissioned work will therefore extend beyond the static barriers imposed by a print publication - so all our ‘illustrators’ are encouraged to produce accompanying motion pieces that can be viewed onscreen, in essence -- a magazine 'in-motion'.

Looking to you
Whilst full of passion and determination, and with issue one fully complete, we are now reliant on you - the avid magazine reader and enthusiast - to help get our humble publication printed and into your hands. We aim to produce an edition of 1,000 copies to sell for £10 through independent outlets and via the Beneficial Shock! website, so your contribution will ensure this happens.

Our Personal Story

With over 20 years collective experience in magazine design, art direction and print production, we are conscious of what it takes to get a publication out there, and to ensure it's continued survival in a crowded and competitive market.

Testimonials

'Beneficial Shock! delivers sharp and surprising insights on underlying, often crucial elements of cinema that we have wanted to explore further or may even have missed. Yet, beyond the magazine's progressive editorial approach, for many it's the methodology that may thrill the most - this is a magazine motored by thrilling, fluid design ideas and eye-popping illustration. I can see it cruise to the front rank of must have movie mags.' Dan McCabe/Magalleria

'There are plenty of mags out there that lead with illustration, but this is a riot of colour and creativity.' Jeremy Leslie/MagCulture

'A strange and alluring response to the movies, with comics and illustrations casting familiar stories in a new light.' Steve Watson/Stack Magazines

There's too many to name within the Beneficial Shock! family, but we'd like to give a big thank you to all our artists and writers who helped create the Food Issue and we are looking forward to working them in future issues.

Risks and challenges

Although we have the first issue 'in the bag' as they say, our final print timeline may slip a tad due to production schedules or because shipping takes longer than originally forecast. The plan is to have the food issue with you by April and we will endeavour to do all we can to ensure we don't disappoint.
