What is DOM Radio 104.7?
The Open Media Foundation has teamed up with Denhac to launch a new addition to Denver Open Media: 104.7 FM, a revolutionary radio station created by, operated by, and dedicated to Denver’s creative community. Exclusively for local artists, bands, comics, podcast authors and more, community members create the content, while listeners vote to give the most prime and repeat air-time to the top-rated content.
DOM 104.7 will be unlike any other radio station on the dial. Dedicated entirely to Denver, there will be no national music, news, or programming… only local content. If you have music, news, or a podcast you want to submit, come on down to 700 Kalamath! The process is unlike any other FM radio station because there are no gatekeepers. Local artists have an unprecedented opportunity to reach new audiences, while the listeners decide what music, news, and radio content they like best at denveropenmedia.org. Have an idea you want to put on the radio? DOM’s state-of-the-art, public access studios are a space for local creatives to collaborate and perform, edit in our community computer labs, and take classes to learn cutting-edge media tools.
Why We Need Your Help:
The Open Media Foundation is a proven leader in launching innovative, community-driven media efforts with limited resources. For Denver Open Media 104.7 FM, OMF has teamed up with Denhac, Denver’s best nonprofit hackerspace, to create a radio station unlike any that have come before. Denhac’s legion of tech masterminds are working with us to set a new standard for local radio, but we need your help. With zero funding from the state or local government or even major foundation grants, DOM 104.7 needs your help to get started.
With an initial budget of $165,000 for 2016, over $100,000 of the budget is being provided in-kind by OMF, Denhac, and Mickey Zeppelin, who donated the best broadcast antenna in Denver (the old Yellow-Cab dispatch antenna at Taxi). To get the station off the ground, we are seeking $25,000 for the new website, broadcast equipment, insurance, contract labor, and startup expenses.
Who We Are:
The Open Media Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation dedicated to putting the power of media and technology in the hands of the people. We empower nonprofits, governments, and individuals to shift the media conversation (and thus social awareness) from the corporate interests of our commercial media system towards the human interests of an open, diverse, engaged public.
Denver Open Media (DOM) is the culmination of the Open Media Foundation's innovative vision for putting the power of the media in the hands of the community. Our missions is to ensure all communities have the media and technology resources they need to engage in local and global communication. We offer state-of-the-art audio and video equipment, media distribution via the internet, and three community-programmed television channels. With your support, we will add Denver’s new radio station DOM 104.7FM to that list!
DOM 104.7FM is a result of OMF’s collaboration with Denhac, Denver’s best nonprofit hackerspace. Founded in 2008, Denhac offers a community space for classes and events on a range of topics. For more information visit denhac.org, openmediafoundation.org, and denveropenmedia.org.
Risks and challenges
The biggest inherent challenge in this project is community engagement. However, we are confident in our ability to successfully launch DOM 104.7 and build a community around local audio content.
Not only does Denver Open Media already provide three community-programmed cable TV channels, we also host monthly live music shows (Open Music Sessions) and provide equipment and facilities for hundreds of local creatives. We have vast experience in facilitating community-driven content, and are thrilled at the prospect of bringing this model of media to radio.
Together with Denhac, we have secured the technological resources required, including our already existing state-of-the-art recording studio. Over the past weeks, we have been reaching out to local artists and creatives to spread the word about DOM 104.7. We have monthly community outreach events planned, during which local artists will begin to record their content, add it to the station library, and build a network.
Just as we’ve done in the past, we plan to encourage participation by facilitating free and open speech by the people and for the people. We are excited to bring this resource to the Denver creative community, and we will be working hard to ensure that this project lives up to its full potential.
