About this project
*** NEW REWARD! ***
We've added a new reward-- A throw size Pride and Prejudice quilt! We’ve had so many requests for a Jane Austen quilt, we've decided to do a pilot run of the Pride and Prejudice Throw Quilt. Available for a pledge of $185. Scroll down to the rewards section for more details!
Here's a photo of me quilting the prototype:
**** UPDATE! ****
WE JUST ADDED A NEW REWARD! The Walden Throw Quilt for a pledge of $190!
**** ANOTHER UPDATE!! Our tea towels will now be beautifully stitched (as opposed to silkscreened!) We've done so well so far in the campaign that we're able to upgrade!
I started Comma Workshop to combine three of my favorite things: modern quilts, stories, and typography. We make timeless, sophisticated quilts and stitch 1000+ words of poetry that I've written into every quilt. Imagine being nestled in a sea of beautiful words as you sleep...
We are dedicated to preserving the time-honored tradition of quilting and storytelling, while bringing a fresh perspective to it. That's our goal at Comma Workshop.
We're thrilled to have been featured in the New York Times, Martha Stewart Whole Living magazine, American Craft magazine, and several amazing blogs. Now it's time for our next big step!
Right now our quilts are made one at a time, with a lead time of up to three months. I’ve received so many emails from people saying:
1) I love your quilts– Can you sew one of my favorite stories into it?
2) I can't wait three months! Do you have any in stock?
3) Do you make quilts in colors other than white?
4) Do you make anything other than quilts?
We love your feedback and are thrilled to launch THE WALDEN QUILT COLLECTION: a series of quilts and pillows with Thoreau's Walden carefully stitched into them. Imagine sleeping under 1000+ words of Thoreau's elegantly descriptive language, or accenting your living room with his wise words. Better yet, this will be the first collection in a new series called Comma Classics, where we will introduce a new author collection every few months.
The highlight of this collection is the Walden Quilt– a queen size, 100% cotton quilt with the Chapter 'Solitude' stitched in cursive into it. The phrase 'This is a delicious evening, when the whole body is one sense, and imbibes delight through every pore. I go and come with a strange liberty in Nature, a part of herself' is accented in a crisp, sans serif font.
The Walden Quilt– innovative, yet timeless; feminine, yet masculine; modern, yet poetic.
Help us preserve the tradition of quilting and storytelling by bringing it into the homes of people we love– you! Your support will help us fund the initial production run of The Walden Quilt Collection. As you can imagine, the upfront costs of producing a new collection are high. It's challenging for small businesses to have the capital to start a new project. Making this collection in small production runs will allow us to have them in stock to ship right away and offer you a more affordable price! Plus, we'll be able to introduce new authors every few months. It's exactly what you've asked for!
First of all, you can help us by spreading the word about our Kickstarter campaign. Share this page with your friends, family, book club, co-workers, random people on the street...you get the idea!
Second, If you'd like to pledge your support, we have some fabulous rewards for you!
And remember, this is an ALL-OR-NOTHING campaign– if we don't reach our goal of $15,000, we unfortunately don't receive any of the money!
$5 - We're creating a special "Gratitude Quilt" to hang in our studio and we'll stitch your name into it! Plus, you'll receive a handwritten note from me.
$20 - ****UPDATE! These were silkscreened towels, but we've done so well in the campaign so far, we're able to stitch them! Note that the rewards still say 'silkscreen'-- we can't edit that, but just know that we've upgraded and they'll be stitched! **** Be inspired by Thoreau's beautiful words every time you walk into your kitchen! Choose a stitched Walden Tea Towel: "I grew in those seasons like corn in the night" or "We can never have enough of nature". Tea towels measure 18"x25" and are available in Oatmeal.

He really believed, that were it not for the inferiority of her connections, he should be in some danger."

We've been working since January 2013 on designing and sampling quilts and pillows. During this time we've looked for the highest quality and craftsmanship to determine which small manufacturer to work with. Our final sample sets have just arrived in the studio. After tweaking and tailoring the samples, we're ready to start our first production run! With your help, when we reach our goal, we'll start production, enabling us to ship to you by November.
1) How do I pledge?
Click on the pledge amount on the right side of the page. You'll then be sent to Amazon Payments to complete the checkout process.
2) When is my credit card charged?
If this project is successfully funded, your credit card will be charged on the project end date.
3) If (when!) this project is funded, how do I get my reward?
You'll receive an email shortly after asking for your color choices and mailing address.
4) I want a quilt for myself and a quilt to give as a gift– can I get more than one quilt?
In accordance with Kickstarter rules, we can only allow one item per pledge. You can make a separate pledge if you want additional items.
5) What will you use the funds for?
The upfront costs are for weaving 2000 yards of the oatmeal fabric just for us! In addition, we have to pay for the first production run of quilts and pillows-- half the cost at the beginning of production and the other half just before delivery. You can see that for a small business this is a great deal of money to start a project. With your help, we can get The Walden Collection off the ground!
6) Where are your quilt made?
All of our custom quilts are made in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains here in Colorado. For The Walden Collection, since it will be a larger production run, we searched long and hard for talented quilters that will put the same love and care that we put into our custom quilts. We've chosen to work with a great group of people just outside of Delhi, India. Our friends and fellow quilters highly recommended this company and they have been a joy to work with. The artisan quilters receive a fair wage, work standard shifts, and are of legal working age. This company receives regular outside audits to ensure safety and the highest standards and is also a member of SEDEX (the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange).
7) Last but not least, why Thoreau?!
I've always had a love of and a strong connection with nature, so it seemed only natural to start our new series of Comma Classics with Thoreau's Walden. If we get The Walden Collection off the ground, we'll feature Jane Austen, Rumi, Shakespeare... oh! the possibilities are endless! With your help, we can make this happen!
Risks and challenges
As with any company that changes production methods, there is a big learning curve and the production team that we work with. Our manufacturer was highly recommended by friends and fellow quilters, so we are confident in their abilities. We've been working on sampling for many months to ensure the highest quality. The samples are finalized and we are ready to go into production.
The challenge we may face is shipping the quilts by our desired date. To tackle this, we've already established relationships with several air and sea freight companies to choose the best method when the first production run is completed.
