"WHAT DO YOU WANT TO FORGET?"

Art project in the framework of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2017 by Jovana Popić for Croatian Association of Artists in Zagreb, Croatia.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

"What do you want to forget?" focuses on the topic of memory.

In my project I want to give people a voice to speak publicly about their memories, in the countries, that often forget their history. By doing this, I wanted to provide a space for the production of individual and collective insights, relative to the canonised world views and governing social and individual contexts.

I also wanted to share deep human insights into life as such, as these insights reverberate from all the stories recorded in this artwork, giving us and the society an opportunity to see the world with those eyes.

Together we can make society aware of those stories and people. Leaving individuals and society unaware of them and without these insights, especially in these difficult times of the present, can fuel catastrophic consequences for our future. Not only within the national, but also international context.

Lets us stand together to bring this project to life and to create a space for dialogue and truth.

DESCRIPTION:

Unique acoustic space installation will be built, consisting of five enlarged interpretations of the human vertebra which indicate a giant human body, as the most direct carrier of identity. Each vertebra contains an invisible loudspeaker which transmits personal testimonies of the victims (or descendants of the victims) of the Holocaust, from three main cities of former Yugoslavia.

"What do you want to forget?" aims to associatively integrate the observer into a dialogue and trigger his or her reflections about specific contents of the memory, as part of a more complex aesthetic experience.

Relying on the works of Assman and Foucault, this project reflects on the process of forgetting as a part of a strong social and political strategy in the formation of individual and collective memory. This is one of the crucial issues in the context of the historical narratives regarding the Second World War and the Civil War in the 90ties on the territories of former Yugoslavia.

“What Do You Want To Forget?” was created especially for the International Holocaust Remembrance Day annual exhibition in the Croatian Association Of Visual Artists (HDLU -http://www.hdlu.hr/eng/ ) in the Mestrovic Pavilion, which is a large exhibition space in the center of Zagreb (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meštrović_Pavilion). The project is non state funded and it was chosen by an estimated curatorial board of HDLU - one the most important cultural institutions in Croatia.

I feel extraordinarily honoured to have been given such an amazing opportunity to raise public awareness for this important and sensitive topic by exhibiting my work "What Do You Want To Forget?”.

Risks and challenges

I have taken into account contingency plans to limit any risk to a minimum. There is a potential risk that one of the elements breaks during transportation. But I have secured transportation to be executed by my long term logistics partner who handled many of my previous shows, thus I am fully confident that all will arrive in one piece. You should also know that there is no risk in production and delivery of the rewards. Reason is simple – I made sure that the production of items such as postcards and bags are on time and for the artwork, well I am already working on it and some of it is by now completed. Thank you for your support!
