FanQuest is a new fan convention taking place May 26 - 28, 2017 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. With your help, we will celebrate all fandoms by bringing together the best that sci-fi, fantasy, comic books, film, television, gaming, and anime have to offer.
Included in the FanQuest experience will be: celebrity guests, gaming tournaments, tabletop games, performances, concerts, and new vendors & exhibitors, all related to the fandoms that we love. All of this will be accessible to FanQuest attendees.
The average con experience can actually be pretty repetitive from place to place and year to year. Fans start by scouting the con website to see if there are any celebrity guests they want to meet, travel to the con, pay the admission fee, browse artists and vendors, pick up some new prints or collectibles, meet up with friends they haven't seen since last con, and maybe, just maybe, attend a panel or two. By the weekend's end they're exhausted and, if our experiences are any indication, they've spent way more money than intended.
But what if there was a fan convention that didn't operate like this?
When celebrity guests attend cons, they make money by charging fees for autographs and photo ops. This can often prove to be lucrative for the celebrity (not always!) but the downside to this arrangement is that it sometimes makes for a pretty boring weekend. The celebrity sits at their table for long stretches of time with nothing to do, waiting for someone to come up and ask for an autograph.
We believe there is a better way to bring in celebrity guests, and we're already working on it.
Our goal is to invite celebrities from current and popular media properties to FanQuest and pay them a fair appearance fee, reducing or removing autograph fees wherever possible. Wouldn't that be a different experience for you? It would certainly be a different experience for them! They could move around the con as they like, checking out artists, exhibits or panels without having to worry about missing potential revenue at their table.
Panels and Q&As can also be formulaic and are sometimes hit or miss. Many of these guests spend a lot of time attending cons, and given a lack of alternative, can lapse into the "same old schtick" everywhere they go. There's nothing wrong with that, it's all new to each audience. But again, pretty boring for the guest.
What if we applied some creativity to make those sessions more fun and memorable? Instead of just asking a celeb to carry the conversation, we could create something new with them as fans on stage together? We could read a script from one of their movies or shows, record live commentary at a screening, play an RPG, and so much more!
These ideas are just a tip of the iceberg and we'll talk more about them as the Kickstarter goes on.
To create fan events that connect, support and celebrate fandoms through meaningful experiences for attendees, creators, volunteers and special guests.
To foster an open, accepting and socially progressive fan culture, both in Winnipeg and around the world.
Fans. They are our foundation. Their suggestions & contributions to this event must be carefully considered and implemented whenever possible.
Conventions. The modern con scene is thriving and FanQuest supports all fan conventions held in Winnipeg and around the world.
Discovery. Finding new books, comics, film, TV shows and games is just as exciting as celebrating the ones you love. We hope all attendees at FanQuest discover something new to love.
Creators. There are so many talented people creating content that we love, in all forms of media. We want you to be able to meet these people and tell them how much they mean to you.
We really do want to embrace the idea of meaningful experiences and take everyone's convention experience to a new level. We want to create adventures that only happen once and will only happen at FanQuest.
While fans will certainly have an opportunity to take new things home like original art, that Pop Vinyl figure that completes a collection, or that t-shirt with the witty Zelda pun on it (I want to make a Zelda pun but I don't want to Tri and Force it), our goal is that all attendees will also walk away with one-of-a-kind memories.
In five years we want to hear a conversation between two fans discussing an amazing thing that happened at FanQuest 2017, and that they cannot wait to see what's in store for FanQuest 2022.
Join us, and you can be involved at the beginning of something new and incredible.
Risks and challenges
The challenges largely revolve around booking celebrity guests in the current "pay for autograph" con market. We want to attract actors, directors, writers, show runners, artists and other well-known creatives by paying them a fair appearance fee, and allowing them to do what they want at FanQuest, rather than sitting at an autograph table all weekend.
Booking a venue of appropriate size is always an issue in Winnipeg. We have reviewed a few locations that we believe will be suitable for our first year, and we plan on growing into larger venues year by year.
Another challenge we face is attracting new & interesting vendors and exhibitors to Winnipeg. Our team will work hard to bring in partners who have never been to this market, and who will benefit from being a part of FanQuest.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
