About

little g ice cream Scoop Shop NYC!

Today is Grace Connor's, the founder and owner of little g ice cream co, 18th birthday. She is ready to open her first scoop shop in the West Village of New York City and needs your help.

Hi, I’m Grace!

I have always loved ice cream! I started my own ice cream company at age 16 with a passion to make ice cream that is the best on the market.

In the competitive business of small-batch ice cream, little g is set apart by its extra-creamy base and the homemade mix-ins that I load into every pint. My flavors are fun, amped up versions of classic ice cream combinations— and I’m always introducing special flavors that keep the brand fresh and fans excited to try what is new.

How it Began

My earliest memories are spending summers at the beach with daily trips to the local ice cream parlor— and eating ice cream for breakfast with my grandparents!

Even before I was an ice cream maker, I was a baker. At five, I baked my first cake and was hooked after that sugary afternoon. I spent all of my free time testing new cookie, cake, and brownie recipes. An informal baking business was born in our kitchen that just kept growing.

When I was eight, my mom bought me an ice cream maker. Spinning ice cream was a new thrill, and the most fun was realizing that ice cream could be the perfect complement for my baked goods. I tested hundreds of flavor combinations!

At 16 I was accepted into a nonprofit commercial kitchen near my home in Boston. After six months of prep and permitting, I launched little g ice cream co. in January 2016.

I walked through a snowstorm to deliver my first order to a specialty grocer in the South End of Boston. My pints of Triple Cookie Dough, Fudge Brownie, and Coffee Toffee Caramel sold out in less than a week.

Overcoming a Brain Tumor

By the end of 8th grade, I had mysteriously lost a significant amount of weight. Doctors thought I had an eating disorder, but my family and I knew something else was going on. I continued to lose weight and my body stopped working properly. Eventually doctors discovered a brain tumor at the base of my brain. I had surgery in April 2015 to have it removed. Recovery was an arduous trek involving multiple emergency room trips and I still require daily medication. However, I chose to channel my frustration into starting little g and this company has been the best therapy.

This entire process has made me very appreciative and thankful for the amazing health professionals who work tirelessly so people like me can have a future. Because of this, I committed to donating to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston as soon as I could. Thanks to my success in my ice cream business, I was able to donate $5,000 earlier this year.

Growing little g

I find that challenges become opportunities; being young and fearless is a benefit, not an obstacle. For example, when I applied for a health permit, I was told I needed a consultant to complete the forms. I understand how to harness the power of the Internet and drafted my own HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) plan. It’s true— many food entrepreneurs hire a professional to do this.

I never dreamed that after one year in business I would be on the set of The Rachael Ray Show or be featured on the “O List” of Oprah’s favorite things (published in the March 2017 issue of O, The Oprah Magazine). My story has been shared in People Magazine (twice), Teen Vogue, NBC Nightly News, and more.

My Kickstarter goal

Prior to launching this Kickstarter campaign, I have financed my business entirely with my personal savings and profits, and without debt. I am now seeking funding from those who share my belief that little g brings a smile with every lick. I am planning to open a shop in the West Village of New York City and need your help!

I want my scoop shop to make a difference in the lives of children. I will continue taking time out to scoop ice cream for the children at Dana Farber’s Jimmy Fund Pediatric Clinic in Boston and will give a portion of sales of my shop to support the research and treatment of children’s cancers.

I am passionate about my ice cream, and I am ready to put in the long hours that will be required to open my first scoop shop. After graduating from high school in May, I will take a gap year before starting college in order to work full time on little g.

Thank you so much for your donations. I cannot wait to welcome you to our little g ice cream scoop shop! <3

"We'd like to introduce you to the newest queen of dairy—Grace Connor of Little G Ice Cream Co. Whether it's featured as Rachael Ray's latest obsession on her show or gracing the pages of People, her ice cream is everywhere lately. Oh yeah, and did we mention Grace is only 17? We were impressed, too. And her ice cream is just as impressive. Little G's fully loaded flavors are packed with things like cinnamon donuts and confetti cake to three different cookie doughs. Each massive mix-in is baked by hand by Grace herself after school, which means the future of snacking is looking very sweet." -Goldbely

Risks and challenges

New York City is a competitive environment, but I am confident in my ice cream and, more importantly, my tenacity and work ethic to succeed.
The time it will take to open a store is dependent on a lease, renovations, permitting, and the unforeseen, all of which come with uncertainty that could delay the opening date.
Although I have not run a retail location, I believe this is mitigated by the success of my grocery distribution (40+ stores in one year) and national online sales (shipped thousands of pints across the United States- including Hawaii to Alaska).
