Based on patent-pending technology, we developed CAMARADA, a mobile APP that allows nearby smartphones to sync and link and form a true 3D video camera. While we’ll get into the nitty gritty details further down, simply put, CAMARADA lets you connect and make memories with your friends and family like never before.
Life is amazing, and it’s easy to get busy with work, kids, family, and a wide variety of other obligations (we know how it goes); sometimes we're so busy that we miss moments or we take them for granted. We wanted to develop an app that allows you to relive your memories all over. CAMARADA turns your recorded moments into 3D, virtual reality, all on your phone, and with no additional fancy equipment. You can view your photos and videos in a VR headset or with red-cyan 3D glasses.
CAMARADA, the Spanish and Portuguese word for friend, was chosen as the name of our app for a reason. We want to take advantage of the combined power of our phones. Together with your friends, you can completely change the way you capture memories and complete your moments.
Human beings have two eyes for a reason, that is, to perceive our world in 3D. This was first explained 169 years ago by Sir Charles Wheatstone, who invented the first stereoscope, predecessor to the VR headsets we have today.
3D still and video cameras were later invented to imitate exactly how our eyes operate. That is, two regular camera lenses are used to capture motion from different perspectives at the same time. Then the video from both cameras are viewed using a headset or eyewear so our eyes see these different perspectives, letting us perceive the depth you see in real life
Although a simple concept, good 3D cameras are very expensive to make and that’s why you don’t see too many of them around. The latest crop of 360-degree, 3D cameras like Gopro Odyssey and Nokia Ozo can cost upwards of $50,000. Clearly they are intended for Hollywood studios, not everyday consumers.
We are on a mission to change this forever.
Single Phone Mode
With the app, you can take VR video with one or two phones. With one phone, the app will take video similarly to other camera apps. However, once you’ve captured the recording, the app will instantly convert your photo or video to VR mode for immersive viewing.
Dual Phone Mode
To take real 3D video, you use 2 phones (can be your phone + your friend's phone; or your iPhone + your iPAD; or your current phone + the old phone collecting dust). The phones are connected to each other via peer-to-peer wifi. For this function to work properly, the wifi function on the phones needs to be enabled, but they do not need to be connected to any wireless network. Our patent-pending technology allows the phones to sync within 1 millisecond of each other, which means there is no need for fancy processing or syncing after you’ve captured the video. All of that is done within the app, right on your phone.
Arrange the camera lenses on the phone to replicate the position of your eyes, meaning the phones should be overlapping, like you can see below.
There is no other phone app available that allows you to take true 3D, stereoscopic, virtual reality video. That makes the choice pretty easy in our opinion. But we’ll keep going in case you’re not already convinced - below are the top reasons you will want to support CAMARADA:
Affordable yet high quality 3D video & still camera
With CAMARADA, you are using hardware you already have, your phone, which is why we can give you the same technology for much cheaper. Quality-wise, CAMARADA allows 1080p recording @30fps for each eye, competing with any consumer grade 3D camera out there, also offering unique advantages like flexible stereo base and software that takes advantage of what you already have in your pocket (meaning you’re getting a huge steal).
Strongest 3D effect, near or far
One of the most important concepts in 3D visual capturing is Stereo Baseline, a.k.a. the distance between the two image sensors. The stereo base is critical because it controls the amount of 3D effect you get. On a hardware-based 3D camera, the stereo base is fixed, typically matching the distance between human eyes. This means the “sweet spot” for 3D is only one fixed distance away from the camera. This is a huge limitation - if your subject is too close or too far away from the camera, tough luck. You get either too much 3D (which causes eye strain) or too little 3D (which makes the scene look flat).
In sharp contrast, CAMARADA’s stereo base is flexible by design. You can vary the stereo base by changing the way you hold the phones. This means you will be able to get perfect 3D effect in a wide variety of situations. Take it outdoors to capture stunning scenery, or make a macro shot at insects crawling right in front of your eyes, it’s totally up to you!

Any time you hold a device to record a video, you might run into problems with stabilization. This is the reason we have put so much development time into multi-frame alignment, meaning we will process the frames within the software, one-by-one. With this, even if the relative positions of the smartphones changed in the middle of a video capture, you can still have a perfect 3D video.

I started my career at Bell Labs where I specialized in digital signal processing algorithms. I then worked for Motorola for a number of years as a lead software architect. Right now a limited function, free version of our app is available in the Google Play store for Android devices. Our goal is to raise the funds that will enable us to bring the app to the iOS app store and bring amazing features to Android. We are nearly there on the Android features, so those will be rolled out in January along with the beta version for iOS. We hope to have the full iOS version ready spring time. Risks and challenges
With over 50 years of combined experience in the mobile technology field, our team has the expertise to make this happen. There has already been 2+ years of research and development on this app, so not only have we proven that it can work, but we've proven that it can work extremely well.
And with our patent pending, we are securing our competitive advantage to make this venture long-lasting.
We need your support to finish the development of new features which are partially completed and the team has the technical skills to deliver. However, as is the case for all software development projects, despite our full confidence, particularly tough bugs can sometimes take longer than expected to fix. And since we need to support the interactions between over 8000 different mobile device models (that’s 64 million combinations), we've got to do a lot of testing. Though we test many of these combinations, especially between the most common models, we can't test everything personally. This is where our bugs can appear, but rest assured that we have yet to encounter a bug we couldn't fix.
