A COMING-OF-AGE STORY
Con Quién Andas, literally translated “with whom you walk,” is the NYU Thesis film written and to be directed by Justin Bonilla.
The story follows Hispanic 15-year-old Hayden DeJesus as her secret relationship with a girl clashes with an old friendship during one decisive day in high school. In this slice of life, we watch through the eyes of adolescence how a girl learns of the difficulty and consequences that arise from embracing one's identity.
THEMES & IDEAS
This film explores our main character's sense of self in relation to those around her. We are all shaped by our environment, but there comes a point when we take our own actions, go against the norm, and dance to our own drummer. This is the point in which the film takes place.
For this character, identity is a real, breathing thing. Identity is complicated and multifaceted, and touches upon the various details that make a person who she is, including, but definitely not limited to: race, religion, age, and sexuality.
There is a Spanish saying: "Dime con quién andas y te diré quién eres." In English, "Tell me who your friends are and I'll tell you who you are." This phrase haunts our character throughout the film as she moves forward in this coming-of-age story.
