About this project
Here's what some kind people have been saying!
I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Peter Heron. I'm the owner of a new jeans label called I AM NOT A VIRGIN which is based in NYC. I was inspired to do something when I discovered that millions of tons of denim scraps get tossed to the floor each year in America alone. As a long time lover of denim I wondered if you could create jeans from fabric scraps collected at the manufacturing mills. This was the beginning of I AM NOT A VIRGIN. As I'm sure you are aware the name is a play on words and comes from the fact that the material used to create the jeans is non-virgin, recycled material. Plus, the name has sex appeal.
But we think I AM NOT A VIRGIN stands for more than that. IANAV is about doing things and making things differently. We like to think of what we are doing as eco swag.
Today our jeans are created in a very unique way by using brown beer bottles and virgin cotton to produce our new jeans.
A couple of facts. It takes 1 million years for a bottle to break down in landfill and if all jeans sold in the US alone were produced using our green technology, approximately 1,200,000 barrels of oil could be saved yearly.
We will eventually have different lines of jeans made from green soda bottles, blue water bottles, and my original idea of using fabric scraps collected at the manufacturing mills but first we need your help to start the production this summer.
Who works with me?
It’s also been an enormous pleasure to be able to work with the pattern maker who started DKNY jeans and the team who cut and sew for Marc Jacob and Ralph Lauren.
I also work some of the best creative and marketing people in NYC. I believe that people inherently want to do good, they want to help, and they amaze you in so many ways if you call on them to take action with something they believe in.
I wanted to design something that I and my friends would wear, so I kept the aesthetic clean and simple. The coin pocket now features the IANAV logo as stitching. The thread color in the indigo was chosen to give a more industrial feel. The inside of the denim has a brown fill which comes from the recycled brown beer bottles. With this in mind I wondered; wouldn't it be cool if we showed this color on the outside to avoid chemical dye processes. So we turned the fabric over and stitched a new pair
As you can see, right now we’re working on prototypes, so we need your help! So please pre-order. We’re designing looks for those who like to take on an urban adventure. My creative inspiration is movement, and I approach every piece of denim with movement in mind.
For the first time in history, the ability to develop a project like this has shifted from collecting sums of venture capital to mobilizing you, the community, to collectively make something happen. Right now IANAV is a company running out of a small apartment furnished with big dreams. But with your help, we can get the inventory and make this dream happen, so please donate today.
Over a 3 month period, an experienced team under my vision will develop a number of Jeans and T-Shirts ranging in sizes for both men and women. People will be updated through Kickstarter, Twitter and Facebook.
We are offering indigo I AM NOT A VIRGIN jeans for both men and women. Limited edition I AM NOT A VIRGIN T-Shirts made with recycled food trays and recycled clear water bottles. Limited edition reversed beer bottle jeans. Customized work, along with invites to parties and access to pre-released jeans via our website.
For anyone interested in bettering the planet while wearing a great fitting jean and T-Shirt this project will be a landmark in exploring technology with fashion to meet that goal. For people that just love cool jeans, this is an opportunity to help bring one to fruition.
