What is Sankofa?

Sankofa is one of the most widely recognized Adinkra symbols of West Africa, specifically Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire, though widespread throughout the whole region.

http://www.adinkra.org/htmls/adinkra/sank.htm

Sankofa is usually symbolized by a mythical bird seemingly reaching over its back. These symbols, which can be found in art and day-to-day life, are used to represent aphorisms. The proverb associated with the Sankofa Adinkra goes as so "Se wo were fina wosankofa a, yenkyi"  which loosely translates to "It is not wrong to go back and fetch what you have forgotten."  For us, Sankofa represents looking at our past critically, with a present view, while aiming towards bettering our future.

So who's the Sankofa Theatre Company?

We came together November, 2011 during our production of THIS IS OUR YOUTH by Kenneth Lonergan. We started out with two friends, Alec and Edgar, trying to produce a site specific show and ended with the formation of a new and exciting experimental theater company. Most of us are DePaul Univeristy Alumns and we all live in Chicago.

Our company includes: artists, business professionals, entrepreneurs, travelers, writers, teachers, social workers, community activists, moms, dads, students; and a flight attendant! We come from over five different countries and speak over five different languages combined; our youngest member is twenty years old and are oldest is well over thirty.

Our mission is to find un-produced/rarely produced works dealing with persons of color while experimenting with the traditional/classical styles of theater.

Ah! And what's this "Fractured I.D."?

Fractured I.D. is a three night-five hour event opening Monday April 23rd at 6:30pm through Wednesday April 25th, 2012 at the Flat Iron Arts Building (Collaboraction) Suite 336 located at 1579 N. Milwaukee Ave. "Fractured I.D." will feature live music from local Chicago bands, a variety solo performances, spoken word, five shorts plays, and readings of three full length plays being considered by Sankofa for future production. All this, against the the backdrop of five visual artist sponsored by The Chicago Photography Center's Outreach Program, which supplies homeless artists with the equipment needed to create their work! The festival will examine, explore, and celebrate the ever-changing identity that makes up our Chicago community and American culture.

Okay...great...so what about the funds?

Our primary goal is raising enough funds to cover all of our expenses so that we may use the income from the festival to pay all of the artist involved with the rest of the proceeds going to The Chicago Photography Center's Outreach Program (CPC) - working with artists who are homeless or in community shelters. The funds for "Fractured I.D." will be used to do the following: pay for rental space at Collaboraction; three(3) nights of catering, including drinks; set design and construction; lighting equipment, costumes, marketing material, rehearsal space, and copies of the scripts.

Anything else...?

Thank you again! With your donation not only are you supporting some 40 plus artists but you're also helping us support The Chicago Photography Center's Outreach Program . Read more about the CPC and their mission here.
