The State of Pathologic 2

Hey, so, let’s talk about the current state and future release of Pathologic 2.

To make sure we’re all on the same page, let’s start with bullet points:

  • We’ve made the tough decision to release the game in parts
  • The first part—the Haruspex’s storyline—will be available in Q2 2019
  • The Bachelor’s and the Changeling’s stories will be released later
  • After it’s released on PC, the Haruspex’s story will also become available on XBox Game Pass
  • All eligible backers will (obviously) receive all three stories as they get released, no additional payment or fuss
  • For now, we’re unsure how exactly we’ll release the other two stories technically—whether as DLCs or something else. What matters is, they remain as crucial to the overall concept and as content-complete as before, no matter how delivered to you
  • Polishing changes a game a lot

Now, to those of you who have been following our progress, the delay probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise. You’ve seen the alpha; your feedback was very kind to us regarding the mood, story, visuals, and overall concept of the game, but it also made it abundantly clear that the game’s level of polish was still quite far from the goal we’re aiming at. Thus, the delay.

Now, let’s talk about the “only Haruspex first” a bit.

Like, talk talk. Please watch this subtitled video from Nikolay, the head of our studio.

Please don't forget to turn on English subtitles—the video is in Russian.

To sum it up, this decision did not come easy to us, but it had to be made for the following reasons:

  • We want to watch you play the Haruspex’s story just as much as you want to play it—and it will also help us fine-tune the other two.
  • It would just be wrong to prolong the wait even further.
  • Your feedback to the Marble Nest and the alpha confirmed some of our suspicions, but also gave us new food for thought. We realized that we need to tweak the game—not its core ideas, but the presentation—some more. Some of our ideas are not what you would call extremely accessible; but that only means that we need to put extra work into making sure only those parts of the game that we want to be confusing, are.
  • The economic crisis in Russia, that happened just around our KS campaign, seriously hindered the early development. It came out of the blue for many people, and, looking back, we still can’t see how we could have avoided it. We invested our personal savings into the game, worked for free sometimes, and in the end, overcame the issues. But it came at a cost—namely, of development speed.
  • In this era of soft launches and Early Accesses releasing a game in parts does not have to come as a shock. Some projects choose it do this deliberately. It was not our original intent, but we do think it works fine with the game’s concept.

By the way, we suspect that some of you were planning to play the Bachelor first or were most interested in the renewed Changeling and thus might be frustrated with our choice for the first story. We can only hope that you’ll give the Haruspex a chance and will like him no less than our beloved snakeskin-wearing fop or cryptic thief girl by the end of the game.

Thank you very much for the kindness, understanding and patience.

Don't mind the delay at all.

Release the game you believe is everything you wanted Pathologic 2 to be, we'll wait :)

      Best of luck!

Do you still plan on delivering physical rewards?

i've been a fan since 2009 so I don't mind waiting, i've honestly been having fun just seeing all the updates. it's like a really long and fun pathologic advent calendar. also sorry to ask this on every release related update but we will still be able to play the finished game on things other than a pc/xbox right? like is there a reason only these two are specifically mentioned?

Get me the full game eventually. Polished is better than rushed releases. I'll wait patiently and, as long as you deliver all 3 "storylines", I'll be happy. If not, well I'l lbe disapointed. But yo uguys arealdy did lots of good work so I'll be patient and wish to you people some very productive work :)

I haven't played the alpha and neither I'm going to play the first episode since I want to play the full game.
However since you guys are just straight and honest to us I'm fin ewith whatever decision you intend to take regarding the development and release date.
      Keep on the good work.

      @Jabberwok

I think they take place at the same time but are separate and you can't switch between them.

I'm not familiar with the game's structure. Do all of the stories take place in the same game space, and were they linear or were you allowed to switch between them?

Trying to get a sense of how long I should wait before playing, for the optimal experience.

You can't rush art. I look forward to playing this but only when you believe it's ready.

Also, thanks for not rushing this project. I really appreciate all the hard work you've put into it.

      @Pathologic,

PLEASEE don't release the Changling/Bachelor's storylines as paid content. The original pathologic would've been woefully incomplete with just a single storyline, and the multiple perspectives were absolutely necessary to make it an 11/10.

I fully understand all backers get all three with their pledge. But I really want this game to inspire others the way the original inspired me.

    14. Duncan on

My only problem is that I don't really have a gaming PC anymore and I'm guessing that a PS4 version will not be on the cards?

    15. Dee Orriss on

Whatever you can do to make something you are proud of, I'll support it wholeheartedly. Looking forward to the first release!

Firstly, I’ve always had a lot of reverence and respect for Nikolay as a creative and intellectual, so I had goosebumps just hearing from him in this format. So thanks for that. As for the staggered release, I am completely nonplussed because I am low on time due to professional commitments anyway. I am part of the 90% that plays games like these slowly, sometimes not even finishing. I suspect the reason there are so many of us in that boat is because of the more mature audience this sort of game attracts (despite a younger, more vocal minority). I trust there is a reason Haruspex is first and you don’t want to spoil it by explaining why. Best of luxk with future development. I look forward to hearing from you again.

I for one welcome our Haruspex overlord. But in my case I played all the way through the Bachelor's story in the HD version and then went straight to Changeling, so I didn't see any of the Haruspex's original story. So I found the experience playing him in the alpha new and interesting (if a bit confused on some of his mechanics, but that's to be expected).

Anyway, more delays are no problem on my end although I know you guys would prefer to start selling something and beginning to recoup your investment. From the potential of the alpha and the general zeitgeist favoring survival games, I definitely feel like you stand to have a success on your hands once this gets out to the wider public!

Thanks for the update. It's good that you keep making the game you really want to but keep tailoring it to stay in realistic terms.

Today releasing a game with an ambitious scope in parts is a good way to go. We're now in an era when it's normal to have sort of iterative or gradual releases unlike the past where you had to produce a final definitive "disc" image for a game in one go.

I do not think that more delays would be a problem. I personally will probably wait for the full game to come out, in case you work out quirks as you devellop the two other characters, and I think that a lot of people would prefer the game to be delayed rather than incomplete.
(However, if you need to release it early because you need some early money then it's another story.)

Anyway. I loved the marble nest. I think that you need to tweak the survival mechanics just a bit (making drinking water less of a constant drag, one bottle should be enough to top you up, etc.)

Also, I'm not a fan of starting with the haruspex, mostly because that character knows the town and is well aware of what's going on, as the player it often felt as If I was missing some of the context. Maybe having a little bit more exposition ( or, ways to ask questions around) would be interesting.

Thank you for the update. For the record, I absolutely don't mind waiting and I don't mind an episodic release at all. (And I was planning to start with the Haruspex anyway.) What matters is your well-being and that you get the chance to make what you want to make. And I'm still really looking forward to it.

    21. Ihor Yakovets on

I think it's a good decision to release the game in parts. It's always good to have the project go live, have the feeling of accomplishment, receive feedback of players and so on.

What about the PS4 version of the game? I have heard in interviews from TinyBuild's CEO that Xbox is more profitable platform for their games. Does that mean that Pathologic 2 will be only released on Xbox, and not on PS4?

Something I agree with is that the story and the world should remain "confusing", but the gameplay should be accessible. I showed the game to a friend who I knew would absolutely love it, but before I let them play the alpha, I ended up giving them a long list of things they needed to know. Such as: "Talk to characters twice, just beause they close a dialogue doesnt mean theyre done speaking". It's a small thing where the game doesn't make it obvious, and some players miss it, and it doesn't seem intended for players to miss it. I think none of us wants to see the game be watered down, but it's good to polish it while keeping the core intact. I can definitely wait until next year to play the first story.

    23. Vlad Sams on

I'm all for Pathologic to be more welcoming to people who play it for the story and atmosphere. I don't mind episodic release either as long as the quality of the later stories will be on par with the first one.

    24. Timothy Casassa on

I'm curious about why the Haruspex gets the first playthrough for Pathologic 2, as opposed to the Bachelor.

In the classic version of the game, the Bachelor had a kind of extended tutorial - the sidequests that you got during the first few days helped to teach the player to all the game's important systems. On top of that, the Bachelor's comparatively secular viewpoint made it easier to process how strange the Town was.

I expect all that will have to change now, and I'm impatient to find out how.

    25. Danko on

It was nice to see and hear from Nikolai. He looks tired and troubled.. Thanks for sharing the news. It does feel like you grew a bit too attached to receiving constant feedback? I hope releasing the first story will give you the necessary boost of motivation to finish the rest. Please hold on.
I'm also confused as to why Haruspex comes first since his mechanics and story were generally more hardcore than the Bachelor's. I suppose it's simply because you started to work on his story first?
I also feel like you forgot to include the release date?

    26. William on

With Kickstarters, I never care much when the product comes. I care much more about quality. Glad you are taking the time to polish. Hope your funding still allows you folks to take care of your families, too. Be well!

    27. Jorge Albor on

This is a unique game with unique constraints, so I never expected this would be easy or quickly completed. Good luck moving forward!

    28. Jesper on

I'm sad to hear the production has been so troubled, but I'm still eagerly waiting to play this game. The alpha demo was really good. I wish you could share a timeframe for all parts, but I know it would just be worse if the promises were broken.

I hope 2019 is more smooth for the team. Throw us some art or videos during december, please? As a small gift. :P
