Come, Little Birds (For Free)

The Marble Nest, a short teaser game for Pathologic, is now available to everyone for free.

Yep, you heard it right.

To everyone.

For free.

Just go to Pathologic’s Steam page (for free), click the “Download Demo” button (to the right, above the list of your friends who want the game, and free), and then send the link to the website to everyone you would like to share the new Pathologic experience with (for free).

See, your reception of The Marble Nest has been overwhelmingly kind—so kind that it does seem like sharing the game with a wider audience would make sense. If it’s as good as you claim it to be, why hide it in the basement? (Especially since it makes that thing down below uncomfortable.)

However, it’s not the only reason why we’re doing this. You’ve mostly liked The Marble Nest—but let’s face it, as backers, you are likely to take most of the things we do in good faith, be patient with us and understanding of our choices.

The rest of the world won’t. Which is why we want to subject our dear little game to the harsh trial of the open gaming world.

For… free?
For… free?

Obviously, we can’t be everyone’s cup of tea. We’re not trying to. And yet we still believe that there is wisdom to be found in the reactions and criticism (or compliments?) of the people unfamiliar with the original Pathologic and our general style of development.

So: please don’t hesitate to download The Marble Nest and try it out. Share the link with your friend. Slide it under your enemy’s door. Show your parents that gaming can be cerebral. Show your teacher the desolation of a dying town.

Experience that brilliant catharsis of going to a forum and sharing with the world exactly what you think of this thing.

We will be there.

For free.

Wait, that last bit didn’t even make sense
Wait, that last bit didn’t even make sense

P. S. If you’re an alpha or beta backer, everything will happen on its own: your version of The Marble Nest will be updated with the current patch, that fixes a thing or two (and breaks a couple, as is customary with game development). Only now you can share it too!

P. P. S. And whoever you are, behold our beautiful new trailer:

The Russian version of the update is here. Русская версия апдейта — здесь.

@Christian Dannie Storgaard, yeah, sorry about that. In hindsight, we couldh have worded it better.

      @Christian Dannie Storgaard:
Nothing confusing here, sir! It is available to everyone as long as everyone is using Windows and Steam! ^͜^

Trying to install from the link: "cannot be installed, because it is a demo, and you own the full version of the product". I'm on Linux anyway, so apparently it doesn't matter.
Could you write which platform something is released on in the future? I got all excited seeing the "available to everyone" headline, only to come away disappointed and feeling left out.

@AK, well, The Marble Nest wasn't even listed as a tier reward, neither does it replace an alpha/beta—so we feel like it's fair to call it a bonus.

However, the second point you raise is also fair: for this exact reason it makes no sense to lock you to a particular tier simply because you've got TMN this way. We've fixed that—your tier should be unlocked now (and so are alpha/beta tiers for all the other backers). Please report if there are any further issues.

@Everyone bothered by the lack of other OSs: We apologize, but we just don't have the resources to port the demo to other platforms. The game itself will still be released on them too.

@Lukas Daniel Klausner and everyone else unhappy with the DRM: we'll look into DRM-free options.

@Edwyn Tiong, when you say "full game", do you mean The Marble Nest or Classic HD? (Probably the first, but just in case.)

If you mean The Marble Nest, your "full game" *is* the demo we're talking about, it updated to the current build authomatically.

@Laputan Machine. I think you miss my point. I just wonder why the tier is locked? They claim i got something of value (only thing i got is TMN key) while at the same time they claim it is free for everyone. BTW i totally support the people asking it to be avaible DRM-free free. I see no reason to keep it Steam-locked.

    9. Laputan Machine on March 18, 2017

@AK: Wait, hold up. So you get a backer tier you don't even want (since you said you don't need alpha access), and when the added bonus - which wasn't even originally promised as a reward at all and just thrown in for fun - becomes available to more people, you get upset?

Look, it's your prerogative to spend your money however you want, but I'm having a hard time empathizing with you here.

@Alphina, well, it wasn't exactly a gift. I had to choose a certain rather expensive tier to get the key. And now i can't lower it even if i don't really need alpha access. And i feel a little bit cheated. Not for the first time, obviously, but still.

    11. Edwyn Tiong on March 17, 2017

Whoops, apparently because I own the full game already (redeemed the Steam key way back when), I can't download the demo. That is a bit annoying o:

Is there anyway to get an MP3 of the menu music in The Marble Nest? I really love the title theme and youtube ripping makes too quiet of a copy so I can barely hear the music unless I blast it.

Wait there's a gun somewhere in Marble Nest? There are FIGHTS?

      I completely missed those!

Guess it's time for playthrough number uh... 4? 5?

    18. Ice-Pick Lodge 2-time creator on March 14, 2017

@Danko, well, The Marble Nest was never *promised* to backers—so it wasn't a reward per se, but rather a gift. They'll still get their truly exclusive alpha and beta access (on top of which we offered TMN).

Seeing how this is the case, we were hoping that if we did make a faux pas by sharing The Marble Nest with everyone, the top-tier backers would be patient enough to explain this to us rather than feel annoyed. But so far no one seems to mind.

Have fun (or maybe bleak desperation) playing!

      P. S. It has its ups and downs. But the setting is incredible.

    19. Danko on March 14, 2017

As a low-tier backer, this is amazing news. I really wanted to play the Marble Nest since I've heard of it and seen some youtube sneak-peeks.
I just wonder if you checked with the other backers before releasing it to the wide world? If I'm not mistaken, Marble Nest was supposed to be sort of an exclusive reward for backers of higher tier? It's not uncommon to make such content public but it's usually customary to ask the backers for their opinion first.
Anyway, I'll stop nagging and go play it and write some glorious comments on the forums ... very soon!
P.S. hi Alphina! TToN was awesome, was it not?

Can I also share that beautiful trailer...

Could you please also offer it somewhere else DRM-free?, Humble, GOG?
