A Catholic Priest Makes The Ultimate Sacrifice
This is a story of faith and power, fallen heroes and shattered dreams. As a demon hunter, you will be given the power to just survive or … or fulfill your darkest desires. However, the path you take is not an easy one. Engrossed in crossroads and tribulations, The Padre is an adventure full of puzzles to solve and cold guns to hold.
A tale both dark and grim- just waiting to be told…
A short and dry definition of this game is obligatory- we are aware of that:
In Laymen's terms, The Padre is a 3D Point-and-Click Survival-Horror Adventure that combines a deep and evocative narrative with slaughtering monsters and solving puzzles, delivered through various gloomy voxelized scenes in a Lovecraftian atmosphere.
Platfroms: PC - Win/Linux, Mac. iOS, Android are planned for release TBA.
Languages supported: English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Russian
Watch the trailer in HQ here.
You can download and play The Padre Light Alpha Demo and navigate through the first few scenes of the game completely free. We want to help you make the decision to support us by providing you with as much information on the project as possible. So play it!
We also have an Backer Exclusive Alpha Demo for our supporters, which will be available right after the campaign. In that version, you will be able to explore more than 50 scenes of the game with a lot of extra content. Think of it as our gift for your support!
The Church is missing an old cardinal. As a result, they send a veteran demon hunter, The Padre, to investigate. God cares even for the last member of his herd, but sending a professional hunter for such a minor issue seems to be an overly cautious move. That's because there are questions that need to be answered and our hero is the only one willing to do whatever it takes to get this missing man back into the clutches of goodness.
At the same time, it’s a journey our protagonist is eager to partake in. He believes a few peaceful days alone with God will wash away the taint of the past few weeks struggling with unholy forces and a long career of fighting evil. It’s almost serendipitous. His prayers for a quiet day or two have finally been answered. But what will the cost of such a “rest” be?
After an exhausting trip through the marshes in order to reach his destination, The Padre longs for shelter. A storm begins to approach when suddenly an ancient mansion sheds its shadow and shares some light on the then dark road. Our priest pulls over and parks his car at the gates.
“Help from the Lord comes to those in the greatest need," he mutters. “I hope they have a bed for a tired wanderer.”
As he reaches for the doorknob, it slowly turns by itself and the door gently and squeakily opens. His dirty boots are bathed in a light filtering through the doorway.
They’ve been expecting him.
After all, what could go wrong?
You enter a corrupted fairy tale set in the 1910s. The Mississippi Delta is poisoned by shadows growing longer and darker day after day. Every moment in the swamps sucks the air out of your lungs. This is a world of darkness- with only a glimpse of hope. As the Padre enters the mansion, even the last rays of sunlight begin to die, suffocated by gathering clouds. Inside this ancient dwelling, every corner echoes loneliness- even the pieces of furniture have their own sorrow. An enigma of a vicious kind lies under this hotbed of malice.
He is the most vigilant- he is the murderer of monsters. A veteran demon hunter, he is at one with his Faith. Fear is not in his list of emotions. However, even a legend can have certain shortcomings. After a long, passionate life, full of adventure, he is growing weary. His addiction of fighting the devil would have carved endless pits of utter darkness in lesser souls. How much more can he take?
He is the broken warrior of hope you are about to become.
The Padre features classic Point and Click controls in a 3D environment with a contextual cursor.
The Controls Are Simple: Collect items to your inventory and use them at the right place and time. No item forging is needed- just clever usage.
Melee and Shooting combat in The Padre is based purely on skill. Over the course of the game, you will find new weapons to improve your chances against our many beasts. Beat your enemies with the best weapon for the situation. Use your resources wisely, however, they are limited!
"Melee Combat requires proper timing"
"Precise aim cranks up the damage"
Sick of useless icons clogging up your screen? So are we! In The Padre, we want to give you as much room on your HUD as possible, so only the most necessary icons and information are shown during the game.
The Padre is also a game where you cannot hide. As a result, there is no health regeneration. It is Pure "Fight or Flight" Gameplay, spiced up with puzzles to tease and tantalize your mind.
The Save System in The Padre will reflect your gaming behavior. Your decisions, regardless of their ethical and moral quality, will affect the way the game plays. These decisions, you will be forced to live-or-die with.
Remember, the game is not only a tragic story in a gloomy haunted Mansion but also a tribute to the games and even some movies we love. Some of these references are apparent, but you have to dive deep to explore and collect all of them.
Over time, you'll realize the protagonist's backstory has to be discovered through gameplay. His world seems to be collapsing. It's your job to save his soul or lead him into damnation.
In a world of fear, there have to be monsters. We will bring you a collection of common beasts, rare demons, and horrors unheard. Defeat them- or just run for your life. The collection of abominations you see here will be just one part of the Padre’s foes. The rest of them are a surprise.
Where hell kisses the mortal realm, everything and everyone can become your downfall. The smallest plant might have a burning desire to take your life. In the world of The Padre, even hollow, inanimate entities crave human flesh. In a mansion overflowing with magic, unpredictability runs paramount, making your survival more uncertain than ever.
The Undead rising again as a force of evil is a common element of dark magic and it’s a force our protagonist must fight against as well. From time to time, some of the dead in this world get bored serving their masters. They have a new goal- consume human flesh. That means YOU.
"Every decent haunted Mansion is full of Zombies!"
The beasts of the mansion had to adapt in order to survive in this unfriendly environment. They are not what they seem. They are on a higher level of the evil food chain.
"Plants are peaceful things ... usually, but now they are pissed off!"
In our world, Inanimate objects can grow to a higher consciousness. They have become tired of watching others alive and well. It is now their turn to start trouble.
"Bloodbath and Bookbirds"
Out and Beyond
Chained to the prison of eternity, terrifying and faceless guardians serve their duty. Where they came from has long been forgotten. Are they guards, or only convicts on longer leashes? Perhaps no one will ever know.
Our world, the one we call home, that is safe and warm, is just a small drop in the ocean of Void. For some inexplicable reason, aliens have searched the universe and found warmth here. They grab it unexpectedly by its shadowy tentacles and extinguish it with no effort.
Some of the horrors adapt as well and make themselves at home in the mansion. Guess what?
They are not the neighbor anyone would ever wish for.
Do you want to have a self-pitying ghost or some broken priest who is ashamed of being alive as a traveling companion? You may well have them both my dear friend if you are not careful enough.
"The Abandoned Ones"
A great game challenges your mind. It also manages to tell a thrilling story. In The Padre, we cooked up an explosive mixture of brainteasers for you. Some of them are trivial, whereas others can be rather cruel. But guess what? This is not “Candy Crush Saga.” Prepare to be lured into our dark world, with puzzles that will take you back to such classic games as “Alone in the Dark” and “Secret of Monkey Island.”
We have also left a lot of wonderful, handcrafted voxel items in the Mansion for you to use, play, or fight with.
Sometimes, using your environment is the only way to overcome your fears. Don't allow yourself to be alone in the dark.
"Fullscreen Puzzles - to tease your mind."
The story will drive you through the mansion and its surroundings. All the scenes are unique pieces of art with lots of small detail. These bones are coated with fine woven cloth of texture and carefully covered with colorful lights.
"You will be Inside and Outside..."
"and sometimes Beyond..."
"or just get lost."
As an interactive sneak-peek, you can navigate through some of the scenes, even in VR.
Check out more 3D (VR) scenes on our Sketchfab.
Now it’s time for you to say Dazzle me! and for us to impress you.
Here are the guidelines of our system:
One: These rewards were created with the assumption that you would like the game to succeed. However, we understand that you do not want to spend your money on unnecessary objects. This is why we made our rewards digital and did not go crazy with physical stuff. Actually, it would cost a lot to create things not related to the game- and even more to ship them worldwide. For example, we did not create the obligatory Kickstarter T-shirt, but you could create great art of your own and print a Padre T-shirt of your own at a local store or online if you want to be that supportive.
Two: To make the project more personal, we tried to figure out how you could contribute to the game with your own ideas. To address this need, we made rewards where you can also share your creativity, or you can play The Padre Alpha Demo right after the campaign and point out some obvious mistakes to make other players’ lives better. Together, we can make the game even better!
Three: We wanted to make as many tiers as we could. If you can't find a proper level you would like to offer, please over-pledge a smaller one. Obviously, you'll get some more rewards in return, like an extra download key or other digital goodies.
Ladies and Gentlemen: Enjoy your Rewards!
We built this campaign in order to achieve our goals, but we know we will not be able to cover all costs with this current round of Kickstarter funding. This is simply to get us to where we can finish the game. Every dollar given will go to game development, in as cost-effective and reliable way as possible. It sounds crazy that we were asking for $25,000, but this project will cost significantly more than our first goal. We made a pie chart (below) so you would be able to see what your would money do if you supported our project. Frankly, we do not dare to ask for more. So ultimately, we rearranged our plans- some of them had to be altered and transferred to our stretch goals. In these extended goals, we will use the money to make the world a more-thriving one, with a ton of mysteries and secret goodies inside, all for the fun of it.
One of our requests is that we would like to hire another coder to speed up the development. Our artists and modelers would then be free to create the assets and environment, and not stretch out the responsibilities for the rest of the team.
Sadly, we can’t tell you what lies at the bottom of the “Tower of Lost Sorrow.”
We challenge you to explore it level by level through your donations.
We like to think of ourselves as creative and hardworking individuals. All of us have spent several years in the video game industry, working at medium-sized studios as well as small indie companies. This, however, is something much different. It is our dream.
We, the two co-founders of Shotgun with Glitters: Balazs - The Developer, and Bence - The Dreamer, have been friends for a long time and have been co-workers on many different projects. The base idea, or just say, the deep need to create The Padre, had been inside of us for a while. Almost a year ago, we made the decision to bring The Padre to life. Why? Because it is the game we've craved, seemingly forever. So from there, with an idea in hand and our hearts and dreams on our sleeves, we gathered a team and jumped into development. .
The Initial Core Team
Balazs Vanyolos: Co-Founder of Shotgun with Glitters,
Bence Zilahy: Co-Founder of Shotgun with Glitters,
Krisztian Toth: Developer, Animator
Tamas Hidasi: 3D Modeler/Artist, Lightning
Lajos Schmidt: Texture Painting
Special thanks to part-time team member, Csilla Geiger for her work on our Website, Marketing and 2D Art. Our testers, Erik, Zoli and Nick helped a ton as well and are one of the reasons why we're so happy with the progress of the game.
You can also read more about us and how The Padre was born in this interview by Patrick Hickey Jr. for ReviewFix.com. Perhaps seeing our dedication to the project, soon after his interview with the Padre Team, Patrick joined us as a Story Editor. He is also the voice of The Padre. A video game journalist for over a decade and an English and Journalism Professor at the City University of New York, Patrick makes sure The Padre has that gritty noir feel we're looking for. Thanks, Patrick!
The newest members of the team are Racheal A. Mack, who is taking care of our PR and Edward Castor (ComputerFiguur), who joined us to make our game Twitter-famous and help us with community building! We wish we knew them earlier!
Now, we are a core team of eight, complemented by collaborators for special tasks. We have the talent, know-how, determination and sheer passion to make this great idea and dream become an awesome reality.
Help us make it happen.
If you want to hang out with us throughout the development process, stop by our Discord Server. You can really help us to shape the game- or just participate the endless fun while discussing WarriorDan's Overwatch skills and Painless's own secret candy museum, or watch how Patrick does the Padre voice on the New York City Subway or while walking his dog. Our community is continuously being shaped and growing. We get daily feedback and are always updating our fans about the new additions to the game, as well as our ideas and plans.
We got a lot of help and advice from Cade, thank you!
We would like to thank every supporter and player of our game who we cannot name one by one!
Let us show you how magic happens!
To create a game out of nothing, you have to be bold and probably crazy - traits we all share. It was clear from the beginning that completing this project the way we wanted was going to be a tough endeavor. Using our personal savings and funds from our families wasn’t going to be enough.
We also knew the days of early Kickstarter successes are gone. A video game project will not be funded based merely on an idea. However, since we are head over heels in love with our project, we took this leap of faith and jumped into it.
Working around the clock, using every possible second to make and polish our dream game, we have now reached the point where we can present it to the public. You can actually play with it. It is only a prototype, but – as can be seen above – it already contains a plethora of playable scenes with beautiful art and features a rich and captivating storyline. Each screenshot and cut are from actual gameplay. Open alpha tests are running on the Exclusive Backer Demo, so help us out and go play it! While we are now able to showcase our stubborn desire, it is now time to continue to refine our dream and make something other people enjoy. Help us make that happen. As you can see, we are so heavily invested in this project. Just like The Padre, we will not run away.
Let us show you we are as good as our word.
Presently, we are running out of our financial resources. Without your help, we may not be able to make this project happen. That is why we sincerely ask for your support. Be our companion at the end of this wonderful journey of creation. We would be grateful for your help and promise to make the best game we can, for you all to enjoy. Buy some of our goodies and share our project with your friends if you find it worthy of your attention!
Risks and challenges
We do not want to promise you anything about this game. Instead, we would like to show you. We know in our hearts that we are capable of making a game you will be fond of. We just need your help. Already, just in the Alpha version of the game, we have more than one hour of the narrative story told, with voiceover, overloaded with Easter eggs from classic games, film and TV. This is a game flooded in memories of the past. At the same time, it's something we want to influence and inspire gamers for years to come. It is the first Voxel Horror Adventure of its kind. Together, we can make history.
On a technical level, we have solved every problem we have encountered thus far during gameplay. Simply put, the game gets better every day. The complete Padre story is already written and waiting to be implemented into what we already have completed. In addition to that, we need to add atmospheric elements to our now ready 70+ scenes. This is a no-brainer. It will make our game significantly better. Again, this happens with your support.
The toughest part of this entire process however, will be the outreach to our audience around the world. We have worked on this for months and will continue to communicate with every player we can, in order to provide the best experience we can. This, we believe, will continue long after the game is finished. That may be our biggest challenge.
You can really help us if you follow us on Twitter and reach out and show our game to your friends! Together we can create an experience you'll never forget.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
