“The Birds” is the not quite apocalyptic account of an unusual species of flightless creatures, known as BIRDs, that take over an unsuspecting California beach community. Originally spotted in ones and twos on the sidewalks and streets, the audacious creatures — recognizable by their black and white coloring and long, slender necks — quickly grew in number. Soon they were on every street corner, sidewalk and back alley, sometimes in flocks of more than 20. Will the townspeople survive this onslaught, or is this the new normal?
This satirical documentary project chronicles the sudden ubiquity of BIRD's, a brand of motorized, dockless scooters. In late 2017 and early 2018, these BIRDs began taking over the streets, sidewalks, and virtually every other unoccupied public space in some neighborhoods of Los Angeles, particularly Venice Beach and Santa Monica.
The series documents unoccupied scooters — as they were found — in the early months of 2018. Rather than write new dialogue for this tale the author has opted to borrow bits for dialogue from the apocalyptic 1963 Alfred Hitchcock classic of the same name. It’s basically the same story after all.
The final product will be a 100-page 8x10" photo book, as well as an e-book. For the extreme ornithophiles out there, there will also be a limited edition of 20 books printed as an 11x14" layflat version.
I have set my goal at $5,000 in order to fund the initial printing of at least 100 copies of the 8x10 book. After the Kickstarter project is complete I will switch to a print-on-demand model for future sales. If I manage reach an additional goal of $22,000 I will be able able to move away from the print-on-demand model to offset printing, allowing me to do an initial run of 750 copies via offset printing.
Risks and challenges
There should be very few obstacles to get in the way of the completion of this project. At this point the book has been photographed and is in the final stages of design. The next steps will be submitting the pages to the printer, proofing, printing and delivery. If all goes well supporters should start receiving the printed version of the book 6-8 weeks after the campaign comes to a close. The e-book will be available much sooner.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
