Mesa County has the highest suicide rate in the state of Colorado. We have deeply felt the impact of this amongst our student population this school year.
In response to this issue, our high school art club decided to involve the community in creating 2 pairs of wings that are 9 feet high and 20 feet long to show the community that there is support out there and they are not alone. Therefore the students titled the piece "Together We Can Fly".
Community members were invited in to create paper feathers to cover the wings. People decorated feathers with positive quotes, memorials, drawings, and designs in support of friends, family members, and strangers who struggle with mental illness. Over 900 people contributed by making over 1500 feathers. A local elementary school also participated. Our original goal was to create 2 pairs of wings and we actually have enough feathers for 3 pairs!
When the piece is completely assembled, It will be displayed at the Grand Junction Art Center as part of a show and then on our school campus. In each of these places people will be able to interact with the wings and take pictures of themselves with wings. We hope this interaction brings awareness to the problem and comfort to those who struggle.

We are now building wood structures to support our wings. Each set of wings will cost $100 each for the structural supports. This is where we need help. All money we receive will be used to build our wings. We have enough feathers to create 3 pairs of wings and hope through this campaign we raise enough money to do so.
Once we are fully funded, we will use the extra money to create more wings...... So the more that we get, the more pairs of wings we will make. The funding we requested was for 2 pairs of wings.
Risks and challenges
Because this is student designed and lead project, we risk having structural issues, especially due to the size of this piece. Our plan is to problem solve any structural issues that arise and overcome them. We also have a teacher with an architecture background who can help us out if needed.
Another risk that we face is not getting enough money to build all of the pairs of wings. If this way doesn't work we will try something else.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
