High Quality Roleplaying Maps for general use in any game.

Cellar Map in Grid Squares
Cellar Map in Grid Squares

We started making maps years ago for our own roleplaying purposes. Our objective was to create maps that were fine to look at and re-arrangable, so that we could get the maximum use out of each piece of paper.

It was easy to find high quality maps, but they were expensive, and were often too specific and could only be used in certain situations. We wanted a great, standard set of maps that covered the stereotypes; typical situations we found ourselves in repeatedly, such as an ambush along a road, crossing a bridge, traveling through a cave, etc.

Our Maps

We created a series of full color, high quality, 11x17 maps that are designed to fit together (typically in pairs) and that are specifically engineered to be rotated and rearranged, creating alternate layouts. Using this technique, you can cater to most types of encounters a party will face in a typical fantasy roleplaying game with fewer total maps scattered about your table. Let me give you an example:

Here are two 'cellar' maps:

and

When you put the maps together, you get a winding layout with many entrances and exits. This is good for chases and sneaking around.

but if you reverse the pages, you now create a layout that is open and spacious; which is better for a large battle.

In addition, these maps have doors that are placed at a common distance from the edge, so that many maps (even if they were not designed specifically to line up) will fit together and allow your party to move between them seamlessly.

New Textures

We've recently begun using hand-drawn and higher resolution textures. We're toying with a lot of possibilities, but here are some quick results:

Here are 3 "Dungeon" Tiles:

Dungeon Entrance
Dungeon Entrance
Dungeon Center
Dungeon Center
Dungeon BossRoom
Dungeon BossRoom

We've named these "Dungeon Entrance, Center and Boss Room". Typically, players will start in the lit staircase in the entrance, and from here they have a wide variety of directions they can go. The center allows players a large open space to battle, with lots of high and low ground and coverage points, and the boss room is a big open area where players can engage a big enemy. We chose not to make a simple "tile" system where everything has gobs of doorways. Completely pre-constructed layouts have no versatility. A tile system has so much versatility that everything looks stupid, and none of the situations are ever all that tactical.

Our system does everything - Various entry and exit points that are set to standard positions. You can tile them, but every "pairing" was specifically crafted to offer something useful, that the players may actually want - The typical case with these 3 rooms would be to simply line them up! Using a marker or object to block the top middle path, the players have a large winding battle over a lot of ground with crooks, shadows, lots of interesting elevation, ledges they can jump down (or up, if they are skilled) with pillars to crouch behind, all leading up to a boss fight.

However, note the versatility, and how each layout actually offers you a scenario where something interesting is occuring:

Dungeon Layouts
Dungeon Layouts

And this is with only THREE maps. Add more maps, some flats and hallways, and you're sure to be able to place a few pieces down and have a great battle.

So you can see how maps can be reversed, rotated and rearranged. Once more tiles are completed, you'll be able to make much larger battles, and your maps will have more diversity. But even if you just choose 2 random maps, you'll have an ideal Battle Map.

What we believe is that 99% of players will be using 2 maps at a time, for a total 22"x34" battle space. A larger area does not appeal to them because they either cannot fit it on their table, or so much of that space isn't being used in the battle to be irrelevant. With this system, you CAN make bigger battles, but it is specifically focused on these 2-map scenarios where your players have an objective. Once you complete that objective "reach the boss room door" players will usually re-situate their map anyway. Or in many cases, they are only playing out the key battle in the dungeon, not sprawling a giant map for the entire dungeon when no combat even occurred. For each major scene, you can select exactly what you want and set parameters.

Print Quality and Durability

These maps are printed on heavy cardstock and then UV coated, creating a very nice and durable map that is partially resistant to spills. If you spill on a normal flimsy map, it can be completely destroyed. With these maps, the edges might still be damaged, but your map will often survive.

Additionally, for an Add-On cost, you can have all of your maps Laminated. This with further protect them and even allow you to write on them with some dry/wet erase markers. Since all markers are slightly different, make sure you test your markers in a small corner of the map beforehand.

What Will You Get?

If you pledge at the $200.00 level, you will become an Arcknight Insider. For starters, you will get the Expanded Map Pack, with Double-Sided Maps and Laminated if you wish, as well as a sneak peak at all of our upcoming Arcknight products. Next, we'll send you a fully playable prototype version of our upcoming Tactics / Roleplaying Boardgame, Dungeon Rumble. Lastly, Arcknight's Lead Designer and Art Director will work directly with you and CREATE YOUR OWN MAP. That's right, any map you want, we'll work together to design and build it, right over skype / chat / text / email, anything you want.

You suggest it, and we'll go through the preliminary design stages together, and bring it to life. As we develop the map, you'll get progress reports, and when it's finished you'll receive a limited edition and signed version of your suggested map. If you're looking for something a little more specific for an upcoming adventure, or haven't been able to find a certain type of map, we'll make it for you! There's only one exception, the map needs to be general purpose enough that other players could make use of it in their games as well. Perhaps you'd like a graveyard, a barracks, an office for a chancellor, or a king's throne room? You've got it. From here, every Expanded Map Pack will include a copy of your map as an additional bonus, along with a custom thank you and acknowledgement of your support. We've limited this option for now, because we're worried if we have many takers, we just wont be able to make our timeline goals. This isn't an "eventually" kickstarter project. If we're funded, we'll complete these alterations and new maps quickly, and get them to you within several months.

Add-Ons

You're going to get a LOT with the extended Map Pack. As an example, the Cellar, Jail, and generic 'Dungeon' maps will all interconnect, so you can make some large fields. That being said, there will always be people with custom desires.

Without complicating Kickstarter or making a long list of irritating Backer Tiers, I'd like to instead offer some Add-On options. Add these amounts to your Pledge, and you'll be able to identify what extras you'd like when the survey's go out after the kickstarter completes.

Upgrade A Map Bundle to be Double Sided (Duplex) - We've reached our $10k Goal! This means every backer will receive their Pre-Set maps double sided (this includes the Colosseum, Tavern, Highland Home, etc.) If you would like the rest of your reversible, normal maps to be double-sided with alternate options on the back as well: such as the Dungeon, Forest Road, Cellar, and Cave maps, add +$10.00 to your Pledge for the Basic Map Pack, and +$15.00 to your Pledge for the Extended Map Pack. Since the Extended Map Pack has many Pre-Set Maps, this add-on is discounted for the Extended Map Pack accordingly. Other rewards, such as the Backer Goals that grant you bonus maps, will be double-sided as well if you've upgraded your Map Bundle for double-sided maps.

Instead of B-sides, you may instead choose to have Grid Squares on the front of your maps, and Hexes on the back of your maps, if you upgrade to double-sided maps.

Laminate all of your Maps - For $10.00 we will laminate every map in your order (Add only $5.00 for the Standard Map Pack). Lamination will further protect our maps, and with high quality dry/wet erase markers you can draw directly on the maps. (Since all markers are different, make sure to test your markers in a small corner of your map.)

Add Additional Specific Maps - For every +$3.00 you add to your pledge, you can specifically pick any 2 additional 11x17 map pages to be included in your bundle. Remember that most maps are designed in pairs (+$1.50 a map page). We can do this any number of times to save shipping, so long as your Maps fit in the USPS package. If they do not fit, we will contact you and inform you of your options.

Stretch Goal - $5000 - ACCOMPLISHED!

We've reached our first Stretch goal of $5000! All backers will had an additional 2-page Pre-Set Map of a Bandit Fortress thrown into their order. This map will be a classic fort that players may assault or defend, with towers, walls and the great style you expect of all our Arcknight Maps.

Stretch Goal - $10000 - ACCOMPLISHED!

We've reached $10k! We're throwing in 2 extra pages of Dungeon Maps (A straight hallway and a curved hallway with adjoining rooms) in the same tile-set as our other Dungeon Maps, so you can build even larger dungeons and have more options. Additionally, everyone's Pre-Set maps will be printed double sided. Pre-Set maps include the Colosseum, Bandit Fortress, Manor, Highland Home, etc. The A-side of these pieces will be the standard Pre-Set map, while the B-side of each piece will offer alternate layouts, and additional landmarks to be interchanged with the map. For instance, Coliseum B-sides may contain fallen pillars and destroyed walls, providing alternate routes with rocky terrain. The Manor B-sides might convert the 2-story thin Manor into a wider single story, with additional quarters, and a stable. And the Bandit Fortress B-sides could provide additional ways in or out of the keep undetected. These are just suggestions, but you can count on us to be forthcoming with our process as we design these maps, and keep with the same high quality and versatility we've shown in all our maps.

Instead of B-sides, you may instead choose to have Grid Squares on the front of your maps, and Hexes on the back of your maps, if you upgrade to double-sided maps.

Stretch Goal - $15000 - No Longer Available.

We've abandoned our $15,000 stretch goal. Instead, all backers will be given a 2-Page Pre-Set Graveyard as a special thanks, whether we make 15k or not as an apology.

New Backer Goals

ACCOMPLISHED!! We reached 100 Likes for Arcknight on Facebook. All of our backers will receive an extra 2 pages of Forest Maps. Extra maps means extra options when it comes to normal encounters on forests and along roads. These may not be the most glamorous, but in our experience they're among the most used maps in every campaign!

At 300 Likes for Arcknight on Facebook every Backer will receive an additional 2 pages of Maps in the Dungeon Tileset as well. These maps are designed to fit with the current Cellar, Dungeon, and Jail maps, and will connect with any future Dungeon and Laboratory maps as well.

Why Kickstarter?

We have a handful of older maps without lighting, texturing and effects. They are decent enough for amateur purposes, but are not a professionally finished product. Finishing these maps and creating entirely new ones is a time consuming process, and we will tackle this based on the feedback we get from you, the backers. Apart from restyling a few older maps, our new maps will be rotatable and interchangeable. This concept has been a smashing success, and we will be keeping this idea going forward with our new maps.

What do you mean by Lighting and Texturing?

Let me show you. Here is a standard version of the cellar map from above, without custom lighting and effects:

As you can see, it's just not that interesting. It doesn't come alive or illicit any mood or impact.

Here is another example of an early ship map with little custom lighting and editing:

and here's a similar ship with custom lighting and effects:

Say what you will about the difference in layout, but the second ship is vivid and compelling, and if this kickstarter is successfully funded we'll be bringing all of our maps to life in this way, printing them in large batches, and delivering them to your doorstep.

Gladly.

Here are a number of older maps that have not been reworked yet. These will give you an understanding of what you will get if you back this project. These maps, and more, will be redrawn with dynamic lighting, glows and effects. In addition, their layout and format will be altered where possible to become modular, rotatable and interchangeable (if they weren't already, although as you can see many of them were.)

Grid Square or Hexes, at your request.

Frankly, hexes are superior in most ways. For our own purposes, we convert all maps to Hex, and convert all games that use grid into hexes with house rules. That's why you'll see most of these maps with Hex instead of Grid Squares. However, we also understand there are some major reasons why people use Grid squares: There's a nostalgic factor, some people simply prefer it, and more importantly, some games have adopted the Grid Square as their official standard, and converting the rules can be annoying.

If you back our kickstarter, we will print your maps in either Hex or Grid Squares at your request. After the kickstarter is successfully backed, we'll send you a survey, and you can tell us what you'd like. We can also print them gridless, for use with transparent overlays.

Just let us know what you need, and we'll do our best.

We can also print the grid at custom sizes upon request.

What size are your Grids?

Both grid and hexes are just about 1" in size. Hexes are 1" from edge to edge, and ~1.1 inches tip to tip. The full hex area of our (2x) 11x17 maps is 20x22 hexes. This size fits most miniatures. Here is a cellphone picture taken during a game:

The miniatures we use are from various sources, and they all fit nicely.

We can also print the grid at custom sizes upon request.

Also, don't forget to Like us on Facebook:  Arcknight or search for Arcknight.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

There really are no risks. We have created several complete maps that we're very happy with, and we already have the means to print and coat them.

With your support we'll invest the remaining time needed to finish new maps, refit our old layout style, and add lighting and effects.

Shipping will be sent out using 17 1⁄4 x 11 1⁄4" Kraft Easy-Fold Mailers, which will snuggly fit around and protect your maps.

Classic Map bundles will either use a thin Mailer, large protective bubble-wrap envelope, or tyvek envelope, whichever ends up being most appropriate to the final pack's thickness.

FAQ

  • This is answered above, in it's own section, but for clarification ABSOLUTELY YES. You may have your maps in Grid Squares, or Hexes, or grid-free, anything you'd like. After kickstarter concludes, we'll be sending out a survey, and you can tell us what type of grid you prefer, and even ask for custom sizing. We'll do our best to meet all requests.

  • Yes, we have added an Add-On option to Laminate all maps in your bundle. I suggest that backers either Laminate their maps, or invest in a quality Art Portfolio, as being able to dry/wet erase on your maps is a huge benefit.

  • After our kickstarter is completed, a survey will be sent to all backers. You can choose the maps you'd like in the survey. If there's any confusion, we'll contact you. If there are any mixups, we'll fix them.

    Last updated:
  • Yes. We have no intention of hiding any finished work or creating teasers (buy the pack and see what else you'll get!). The reason we do not list all of the maps, is because we have not yet developed all of the maps.

Typically in a kickstarter, you get funded and then you 'start' your project. Of course we're well ahead of the curve and had been underway for some time before launching, but it's still going to take some time to develop and enhance all of the maps we've promised.

We'll keep a steady stream of updates and new images being added to this kickstarter, so no worries there.

    Last updated:
  • Yes, but when I began to calculate the "per price" cost of duplex maps and factor in the discounts based on the tier you were purchasing, things got far too complicated to list in the Add-Ons section.

If you would like to do this, just PM me with what you would like, and we'll work it out. You're be paying basically the same "rate" per sheet as your current pledge would have been with the duplex cost added in.

  • You may have to delay filling out your backer survey until you see maps you'd like. However this timing works out, we'll have each other's information to stay in touch, and we will be transparent through the entire development process. We will always work with you to get you exactly what you want.

EDIT - As of right now, every map has been declared. We do not yet have all of the finished images, but at least you can see the name/concept of each map. For further information, please check Update #12.

  • If you buy the maps, in our opinion you have the right to use these maps in any format you wish. If you'd like high quality .JPG versions of these maps for VTT you can request them in the kickstarter survey, and we will supply them to you directly.

After kickstarter concludes, we will begin creating a VTT "only" version of these maps, snapping them to the correct 100px x 100px format, adding custom grid layers, and even making an object package that includes Fog of War information. This process may take a little time, but when it is complete we will be selling a VTT package with all of our maps in digital-only format.

If we launch a new kickstarter, we'll certainly let everyone know!

    Last updated:
