About this project
We want to bring a new option to tabletop gaming - miniatures printed on thick clear plastic, with great double-sided art that's pre-cut and ready to use for pennies on the dollar.
The Flat Plastic Miniature (FPM) is similar to a cardboard pawn or papercraft mini, except that it's produced on thick transparent plastic. They are artistically pleasing without any white edges and can be used to create a library of miniatures OR supplement the existing miniatures you already have.
The cost to produce a traditional miniature is quite high, and generally only those miniatures that will get a LOT of sales will ever be made. But our product doesn't have these concerns, and we can create any style or concept for a miniature we can imagine. This allows us to specifically address the "harder to find" items like villagers, bears, wolves, children, treasure chests, spiders, etc. Of course, we'll be bringing along a slew of classic heroes, monsters and archetypes as well!
With a little maintenance on our printers, and the replacement of a few parts, these will become much more crisp and bring out the full potential of the art.
We want to incentivize all of our backers to buy all 5 core packs. Single packs are $25 each, so here's the 'Deal'. If you buy in at the $75.00 "I Want It All" Tier, you'll get all 5 core packs, for a grand total of 310 miniatures. This kit will include 2 Panels of Bases, and domestic shipping thrown in, as well as any stretch goals that are not 'add-ons', such as the Legendary Creatures stretch goal.
(International shipping is an additional +$20, and we are EU Friendly.)
Southlands FPM comes from Kobold Press' recent kickstarter
The Monster Mansion pack comes from our fellow Kickstarter project
Add-on Packs are additional 62-Piece sets of FPM minis that we can offer along with our core packs, including collaborations with other artists and projects. Unless otherwise specified, Add-On packs are $25, and do not come with additional bases.
(The Monster Mansion pack is an exception, and may be purchased for $25 with an extra panel of bases, or $19 without extra bases.)
An entire 62 piece pack of Forest-related miniatures, including elves, wolves, druids, nature spirits, hunters, familiars, spiders and other such things. The "Horde Monsters" for this pack are Wolves, and to a lesser extent the Elves themselves. (more on Horde Monsters later)

Ancient Evils is pretty straight forward - it's evil. Specifically, the non-succubus, non-vampire, type of evil without any sex appeal. The dripping, rotting, filth that crawls out of the ground, bringing horror in it's wake. Zombies, Liches, Spectres, Necromancers, Lovecraftian horrors like Cthulhu, black tentacles, cultists, and their foul spawn. While it's not all 'undead', it certainly leans toward the unclean and those corrupted with the scent of death.

Ah, Mankind. They cover the earth with their tenacity and persistence, only to find themselves in constant peril by everything that moves. Let us be clear - the Mankind pack does NOT represent the glorious: the paladins, clerics, valkyrie and other shining avatars of the human race, but rather it represents the rest of us, and at times the very best of us. Not because we're the strongest, or the most prepared for the fight, but because sometimes in our despair we simply refuse to die.
Mankind encompasses the civilians, gate guards, office clerks, beat cops, investigators, mercenaries, children, smiths, dock workers, artisans and other rabble simply trying to make it to their next meal. But don't misunderstand, among their battered gear, shattered lives, and tragic histories, there are still plenty of heroes.

Our sizes are pre-formated to maximize the pieces per sheet of plastic. The sizes we've decided to create are "Small", "Medium", "Short / Wide", "Giant / Wide", and "Giant / Tall". To be more accurate, the "Medium" size category is actually broken down into 5 different shapes, with variations, but that are all basically the same. We have Medium - Thin, Medium - Coffin, Medium - Full, Medium - Gumdrop, and Medium - Teardrop. These distinctions aren't very important however, since we can craft a humanoid piece to fit pretty much any of these shapes, but this allows us to work around weapons, armor and other things typically carried by humanoids.
Small are great for objects, critters and shorter monsters like Goblins.
Medium are the most common, and are great for humanoids of all heights, from children, to elves, to orcs. Even horses, centaur, and large monsters such as trolls and ogres fit nicely in this shape, but tend to fill out the top of the piece more.
We make sure each unit is approximately the 'correct' size. Sure, either way they will fit within the "Medium" plastic, but it makes a far nicer impression when your children are short, and your Orcs are tall. A major advantage of using clear plastic is that any excess space is not "white", and isn't even noticeable (and if you were so inclined, you could even cut the excess plastic off.)
Short / Wide are great for special quadrapedal monsters, such as Giant Spiders, Wolf packleaders, or a bear.
Giant / Wide are ideal for large but not necessarily tall monsters, such as Driders, naga, or perhaps a dire bear.
Giant / Tall is our largest standard size, both wider and taller than the Medium size. These tend to be used for giants, dragons, elementals, or anything large and impressive.
Every pack will include some sort of "horde monster" if not several. A "Horde monster" is a really exciting idea that our fans have asked for many times. A way to have multiple versions of the 'same' creature, with some way to distinguish them.
We'll, we've taken this concept several steps further. For starters, each "horde monster" will be completely unique art. So if a pack has 4 wolves, or 6 zombies, they will ALL be different pieces of art.
Second, we'll use visual color cues for each piece to further distinguish them in subtle and clever ways. For instance, among your "horde" of 6 zombies, one may have a gangrenous arm (green), one may be bleeding (red), one may have a blue sash from his previous life (blue), and so forth.
At a glance, even from across the table, you'll see several similar zombies, but with multiple visual distinctions.
For "The Grove" we have a 4-pack of Wolves, all forest themed and classic in their look, but one is heavily accented Gray, one Black, one Brown and grungy, and one has heavy orange tones.
The Elves in The Grove can also be considered a "horde" monster. We've created an entire force of elves, armored in a similar fashion but with plenty of uniqueness. With this force of elves, you can have a proper forest ambush, and still tell them all apart.
For a little extra, you can get directly involved in the creation of an FPM piece. We call these "User Submissions" and we've set aside a set number for each pack, specific to each Size and Theme. With a User Submission, there are several things you can do.
1> If there's a piece you find missing, like an exotic monster you wish was in the set, you can simply add it.
2> If there's something out there you love, you can link us to an image on the internet, and we'll use it as a thematic guide to create something new based on what elements you like. As a test, we took the infamous "Boba Fett" from Star Wars, and turned him into a fantasy ranger. We renamed him "Confetti Bob" for kicks. He retains elements that are thematically tied to the original bounty hunter, such as his green cape, the T-shaped visor, and a ranged weapon, but converted it all into a completely new piece and an appropriate character for a fantasy setting. (Confetti Bob is one of the 'hunters' included in The Grove).
3> You can add 'yourself' into a conceptual piece by emailing us a picture / link to a picture of yourself, and how you'd like to exist. As a test for this concept while my wife was pregnant we took her picture and made her into a "Pregnant Villager". She got a huge kick out of it, and now in our home games we have a 'damsel in distress' piece. I think we've already used it almost a half dozen times =P (Part of the Mankind pack)
Legal Issues, aka "What can or can't I submit?"
You can submit ANYTHING. It is not YOUR responsibility to worry about copyrights or legal infringements. We will take the images you submit and use them as inspiration to create unique artwork themed after your suggestions.
If your suggestions are traditional fantasy in nature, Marta will use your submitted image and create a similar piece. For instance, if you submit an ogre, Marta will make an ogre for our pack, but she will use the specific image submission to convey the style and type of ogre that you find appealing.
For more complicated suggestions, such as an image of a person in real life, a celebrity, or a clearly copyrighted image, Marta will use the image in a more conceptual way; creating an entirely new piece that has familiarities and likenesses to you submission. You may suggest directly 'how' she uses the piece such as "turn this person into an undead lich" or let her be creative (usually better results in my opinion).
It's very possible that people submit images they have no rights to, and we really have no way to validate the legal status of an image even when the image is submitted by it's supposed owner. So we will never attempt to copy or infringe on the intellectual property of ANY image submitted.
In rare cases, someone may submit a piece or suggestion, and even using a great deal of creative license Marta may not have any ideas how to accomplish the request. In these cases we will simply inform you that your piece cannot be done (as submitted) and you can choose something else. This is COMPLETELY at her discretion. She may reject pieces because she artistically doesn't know how to make them work to her standards, or because she just doesn't want to do this piece. In every case I've thrown at her so far, she's come up with something great, so hopefully this never comes up.
If you're backing us for physical miniatures, and you'd also like all Digital Assets from the Digital tier, you can get every digital asset at a reduced price of only +$10.
The digital pack will include EVERY miniature in VTT token versions and print-at-home papercraft versions, even for miniatures you are not physically receiving.
The digital pack DOES include Stretch Goals, AND any Add-ons and collaborations we have the rights to distribute. If we make these VTT tokens or Papercraft, you'll get them.
By adding an extra +$10 to any pledge, you may get an additional panel of 40 1" bases in Round, Square or Hex shapes.
Some people prefer larger bases for their Large, Huge, and Colossal creatures. By adding an extra $10 to any pledge, you may get an additional panel of 3x 3"x3" bases, and 4x 2"x2" bases, in Round, Square or Hex shapes. These bases are ideal for league play, with a clear indication of which tiles your large and giant creatures are standing in.
By adding an extra +$10 to any pledge, you may get an additional panel of special plastic bases that allow any of your miniatures to "fly" at various heights.
By adding an extra +$10 to any pledge, you may get a base panel cut as a Display Plate with many slots to sort, store, or showcase your miniatures.
By adding an extra +$15 to any pledge, you may get an additional 2 panels of base plastic cut into large shapes with a dark opaque plastic, ideal for creating a "Fog of War" effect in your games. These plates are heavy enough to hold down paper, and are typically used to hide sections of the game map you don't want to be revealed yet.
By adding $20 to any pledge, you can get an extra panel with an assortment of Colored bases. These are great to easily identify which enemy is which, and also to represent status effects - such as being poisoned, caught on fire, or in stealth. Each panel is 40 bases, and you can Vote for which layout option you prefer.
For $25.00 a Miniature, you can even directly submit your own art to be turned into a custom miniature, specifically for you. Your custom printed Miniature can be of any size and shape we produce. If you supply a back side, we will use that, otherwise the back will be a mirror of the front. On request, you can replace the back with a solid color.
If your submitted art is not cut out in a transparent format, for an additional $10 per miniature we will also cut it out for you.
We've joined forces with the Monster Mansion Kickstarter campaign to bring you a set of FPM Tokens straight from the Monster Mansion game.
Add +$19 to any pledge to add a Monster Mansion pack of Flat Plastic Miniatures you can use to pimp your copy of Monster Mansion or bring them into your tabletop RPGs! If you'd also like to add a panel of bases, add +$25 instead. (FPM backers may have enough bases, but Monster Mansion backers will likely need new bases)
You can check out the Monster Mansion KS here:
Monster Mansion is an ongoing kickstarter, so they'll be unlocking additional monsters as the campaign goes on. We'll be working with them to arrange their monsters on a sheet of plastic to be printed as FPMs, using the same layout and number of pieces in our current packs (62 pieces, in the same arrangement). We'll be able to give you more information about how many of each monster will appear after their kickstarter ends.
Marta is an incredibly talented Polish concept artist who has worked with me for over a year now. I'm continuously stunned at what she creates, and I absolutely love working with her. She first started creating "card" art for another project of ours.
When we set aside development on that project, I asked Marta if she would instead personally take on the FPM project as full-time work, and she agreed. Thus far, she has created every single piece of FPM art. So if you see something you love, it's all her! And as long as she's not overwhelmed and needs additional help with the workflow, she will likely continue to personally create every piece.
As the lifeblood of this project, i've asked Marta to be as 'hands on' as possible during the entire 60 days, so we can expect to see a lot of her during the campaign.
As a backer this gives you a great opportunity to hit the comments, chat her up, say hi. If you submit a User Submission it's very possible you will see it sketched right before your eyes.
So I invite you to give Marta a warm welcome and this should be a lot of fun!
Arcknight is a small company from Anaheim, CA founded by Joshua Wardrop and Philip Krog-Sorensen. We launched our first official project a little over a year ago; "Roleplaying Maps, by Arcknight". We had a modest $500 goal, and planned a minimum of 30 maps (single sided).
We funded in just under 24 hours, and the campaign went much further than expected - ending at 58 PAGES, double sided for 116 maps, and laminated. The final "map pack" we shipped out was over 7 POUNDS. It took nearly a year to create the art, and another few months to deliver. And we DID deliver, with incredible feedback and testimony.
Since you've developed plastic printing, could you also produce other types of game tokens on flat plastic?
Yes we can! To start, we certainly can't offer to take small custom print requests, but if you have your own game company or wish to create large batches of durable and transparent game pieces for any purpose at all, contact us. We'll give you an estimate and you may be surprised to find that we're actually CHEAPER than other options.
Risks and challenges
SHIPPING SUCKS. That's just how it is. So we've gone out of our way to design our entire product to "magically" fit into a Small USPS Flat-Rate shipping box. We waste a little plastic, but in exchange we have a marvelous and absolutely static shipping cost. Domestic = 5.90, and international = 24.75. Period.
So we've factored in all domestic shipping to be 'free' and international backers will pay +$20, across the board, and that's that. (Why isn't international -$5.90 then? Because I have to fill out all of your customs forms one at a time, and it makes me want to shoot myself, thats why =P)
SO, if you still think shipping costs are too high or unfair, keep it to yourself please because I have literally NOTHING TO DO WITH IT, and shipping costs could not possibly be lower.
Plastic. We have delayed this project for some time, knowing full well we "could" produce it when the time comes, because we did not have the plastic in hand. I refused to pitch the FPM project if I couldn't show you 'real' prototypes. SO, we now have this plastic on hand / in stock / ready to order, etc. Everything is set, but it's important to note that something could theoretically change in the plastic department. I'm being told that as long as I give them 30 days notice, I can have a virtually unlimited supply of plastic, so everything sounds good.
Marta / Art Development - Art is THE upfront cost for this project. If Marta cannot handle the workload, we have potential issues, however I already have at least 1 fantastic backup artist. His style is different, certainly, but it's no less awesome. We may even have him jump aboard and give us a cameo for a few pieces for fun. So I'd classify this as a "potential risk" to have so much burden on one artist, but one that we've at least discussed and made preparations for.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
