Clear Map Grids are way to place grids where no grids have gone before. You can now make battle maps out of virtually anything - from gridless maps to tablecloths or maps printed at home, and best still we will print you any type of custom grid.
If you've seen our Roleplaying Maps by Arcknight, you've seen what we can do with Grids using both a white and black effect. The white will be more apparent on dark backgrounds, and the dark will be more apparent on light backgrounds, giving you great contrast in any scenario. We've applied this technique to the plastic used in our Flat Plastic Miniatures campaign with great results.
Clear Map Grids are wet erase and dry erase, highly resistant and flexible, and heavy enough to hold down paper and resist being blown around. They're light enough that they can be shipped and carried easily, and layered over a large table (or any other area), with very little effect on it's thickness.
Grid - ANY Type, Size and Color!
There's really nothing we CAN'T print as Clear Map Grids, so we're leaving this completely up to you. Throughout the campaign we'll be taking backer suggestions and creating all the grid sizes, colors, and styles our backers want. This is your opportunity to get grid support for rare or specific needs that you otherwise could not easily accomplish.
When the campaign ends, you can select any types of Clear Map Grids you wish.
The list of grids includes, but is not limited to:
Our Standard 1" Grid Squares or Hexes, with crosses to minimize art loss
Oversized Grids - 1.5" or even larger grid squares or hexes. Great for Heroclix or other games that use large pieces.
Small Grid - Quarter Sized, Half Sized, you name it. Great for games like Car Wars or systems that use fine movement in steps other than 5'.
Double Grids - Large Square or Hex clusters, with smaller Square or Hex grid inside them. Useful for counting large increments in games like Mechwarrior and Battletech.
Colored Grids - High Contrast, Colorblind, any colors you could possibly want. Let us know what you'd like, and we'll create it.
Stylistic Grids - Grids with borders, inverted light/dark, thicker or thinner shadows, and various other effects. Whatever you think looks best.
Classic Full Grids - For a more traditional look, ditch the crosses if you'd like.
Mix and Match! There's really no type of special grid we can't make. So if you want it, ask for it, and we'll make it for you. And if you want something not shown, tell us in the comments.
Other Uses for Clear Map Grids
Some quick ideas about combining texture maps and cutouts with Clear Map Grids.
A concept for river and road tiles using Clear Map Grid's transparent plastic.
Unlike our previous projects, our Clear Map Grids do not require new art or resources to be created. So apart from extras and Add-ons, we'd like a very fast turnaround on this project and put these sheets into your hands as soon as possible. After the kickstarter ends, our goal is to deliver Clear Map Grids to our backers within about 60 days.
Clear Map Grids are initially printed on 12" x 18" plastic sheets, with a 1/2" margin on all sides, creating an 11" x 17" printed area (same as our maps). This is the standard format that all sheets will be delivered in.
Clear Map Grids can be cut by anything you would expect to cut plastic. (Scissors - yes, your teeth - no).
For a small fee, we can additionally cut your plastic down to 11"x17", or cut it further in half to 8.5" x 11" US Letter size prior to shipment.
This fee will likely be +$5.00 for any size tier, or broken down on a per-sheet basis inside Backerkit when adding additional sheets.
Your Tier is how many sheets you'd like, and locks in a discount based on volume. Backers ordering at least 4 Sheets will be able to add on additional sheets through Backerkit at the same per-sheet price as their initial tier.
Once a backer is getting 8 or more sheets, the price is set at a flat $9 per sheet of plastic, and this price is locked in for all add-ons and additional plastic sheets added through backerkit as well.
We have a lot of potential ideas, but this again will be based on our backers and their wants. From my perspective, the Clear Map Grids project is ultimately a "what would you like on clear plastic?" campaign. Within that scope, and assuming art already exists, we have various aides and supplements that may interest backers.
1> Spell Effects - Semi-Transparent spell graphics can be printed into the plastic, with a variety of elemental types and designs, allowing you to cut out spell effect templates for your tabletop characters.
2> Player Cards - A suggestion we received from one of our fans is incredibly useful for convention and large-table play. Player Cards are small colored cards that stand up in front of your player and face the GM. Since they're dry erase, you can write your name, character name, initiative, and other key information for the GM to see at a glance. Since the player cards are colored, you could use the same color for your miniature's base, synchronizing the character and the player. Originally the idea seemed novel, but it wasn't until I started playing Adventures' League and other public games that I found out just how useful these cards are. In public games, I often do not know the names of my players, and these help immensely. Additionally, when players have status effects like poison or fire, you can write notes on the card for the benefit of your GM. I've had hidden information I wanted to remind myself of - and I simply asked the player to mark their player card. They didn't know why, but almost an hour later when I scanned the cards, I saw the notation, and it served as a reminder.
3> Top-down Horses and Carriages - One of the worst parts of trying to make top-down figurines such as a horse and carriage, is that you lose all map information underneath them, from the grid to the texture. However, we can print top-down horses and carriages onto clear plastic, so all of the space within the gaps remains clear. This same concept can be used for furniture and many other things. We can make sheets of objects you can cut out, and drop onto your table in moments.
4> Modular Stairs - There are various places in our original RPG maps where you may expect stairs, but they don't exist. Our Grand Cathedral for example has no stairs. The reason is that you can dry erase stairs onto your map, but you can't remove them when you want a single-story church. We found that it's more aesthetic to put less on the map and let your imagination (or your pen) fill in those details. Another cut-out idea now that this plastic is available is for staircases, rooftops, and other objects to layer over your map. Since the plastic is fairly heavy, they won't easily blow away, and you can drop (or tape) stairs and other customizations right onto your maps.
We're shipping Clear Map Grids in Uline Tear-Proof Poly Mailers. The mailer weighs 0.05 pounds, and each sheet of plastic weighs 0.15 pounds.
This time around, we're going to directly pass along the shipping. The only shipping carriers are UPS, FedEX and United States Postal Service; of which the latter is by far the cheapest. We're getting an online bulk discount through Paypal / printing labels ourselves, and these shipping costs are absolutely locked in. It's up to you how many sheets you want to buy, and at what point you believe shipping is the most cost-effective.
Here is a complete shipping breakdown of shipping costs, using these mailers at various weights and destinations, including the cheapest carrier service. Add-ons via Backerkit will factor in additional shipping costs based on their individual item weights, and we will pay for any kick-up costs once your total package weight exceeds 13 oz domestic, or 4 lbs international.
Domestically, First Class can be used to ship thick envelopes up to 13 ounces. First Class International however allows up to 4 lbs per thick envelope. Because of this, you'll see something very funny, that at some weights its actually cheaper to ship to Canada than within the US.
There is also a cost for the mailer itself of ~$0.50. In most cases we eat this cost. Since Kickstarter requires shipping prices be round $1 intervals, in some cases we rounded the shipping cost up accordingly.
This project WILL be EU-Friendly. All shipments to the EU will be shipped to a redistributor in Germany, and reshipped to you. This does NOT mean your shipping cost is lowered (in fact, it slightly raises shipping costs, but we've got that covered) but it means that when you receive your package, you should not have to pay any additional import taxes or tariffs.
Risks and challenges
The primary risk with Clear Map Grids is the printing process and machinery involved. The printer and process we're using is quite involved, and at times it malfunctions or needs major repairs. Servicing a printer is nothing new, but untimely breakdowns could cause delays to our Rapid Delivery Schedule.
However, delays aside, there are no major risks and we can certainly deliver this project. We have already produced working prototypes of our Clear Map Grids and they're shown in the video.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
