Who are you?
Dagmar is a trained carthographer who developed her ideas regarding the Flexatube during her freetime. Multiple totally different approaches have been taken, including paper-only and fabric surfaces, until the current, wooden design was found. While the first are simpler, we choose to provide to you only the best.
Tobias is Dagmars son. He assists her in production and tries to spread the idea by running this kickstarter campaign.
What are you planning to make?
The Flexatube, a mathematical folding puzzle that allows you to flip it inside-out with smart folding moves. While the principle is already well known and solid, this project delivers an appropriate design both good feeling and visually stunning.
For each Flexatube, 32 wooden triangles are attached to a strap of the most solid fabric we found, also used in sailing. The triangles are laser cut to precision and also tougher that you'd think, as we use a special type of veneer.
What can you do with it?
The ultimate challenge is to use smart folding moves to flip the Flexatube inside-out. So if the blue side was outside first you can change it to the red one, and back again. Multiple solutions exist.
Furthermore, different special forms can be puzzled (see the shown ship design). Many more exist, e.g. the hat, the magic bowl (that can be used for a disappearing trick), the beak, the star, and the roof below.
We designed the Flexatube for sturdiness, however we ask that you do not give it to small children under age 6 and not to use force.
Where did this project come from?
The Flexatube was originally found by Arthur Harold Stone, a British mathematican during his studies at Princeton University in the USA.
What’s your schedule?
- March Running this Kickstarter campaign and scouting the interest in the Flexatube.
- April As materials are chosen, the next steps include ordering them from suppliers.
- Mai Treating the wood and preparing it to be cut.
- June + July Assembling the Flexatubes.
- August Delivering the Flexatubes.
The estimated delivery date is based on this schedule and our previous experience with the prototypes. A delay in delivery may occur if our suppliers delay, but because of the small amount offered we're very confident to be able to ship by August.
Risks and challenges
The prototypes are developed very far, as can be seen in the video, but are also very time consuming to make. Depending on the demand we intend to find better ways. Even if we don't, we are able to craft the offered amount in the very intial way we do now.
