I along with my team are creating an installation for ArtPrize which is the international art competition which began right here in Grand Rapids Michigan and is now in its 5th year. Our piece, the, City As Muse, will be featured in the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts. The installation will include an 8’x12’ oil painting, a documentary film, an exhibition of working drawings as well as a booth where visitors will have an opportunity to respond to the question, “what do you want Grand Rapids to become?” This project is intended to stir our citizens as well our visitors into a dialogue that we hope will help establish a clearer vision for the city’s future.
This project is a leap of faith. Not only does it include the largest painting I have ever done, but I’ve moved all other work to the side to make time to do this right. As a result, my regular income has dropped off to a trickle.
It’s very common for artists to find themselves cut off at the knees creatively because they haven’t developed the support around them to see their vision become reality. Like the great explorers in the past who went to the King hoping he might finance their next voyage, I simply don’t have the resources myself to see a large project like this to completion. This is where you come in.
When you decide to back City As Muse, not only do you receive something really cool as a reward, but you also get the satisfaction of coming alongside an artist working within his local community to develop the vision that will move the city further towards its greatest potential.
As a reminder to how Kickstarter works, if we do not reach our goal of $5,000 we get nothing, you get nothing. This is what you could call an all or nothing proposition. So how about you and I make this happen together!
Risks and challenges
Once the City As Muse painting is done being exhibited at UICA during ArtPrize we need to find a permanent home for it so it does not just go into storage afterwards. We would like to find a public place where is could be enjoyed by as many people as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
