Sidekick Saga is a legacy, cooperative, card game of Heroes and Villains exploring, fighting, and strategizing!
- "Legacy" story over 6 Comic Book Issues (light legacy or scenario-driven, see below)
- Variable Powers
- Hand Management
- Simultaneous Selection
- "Drafting" (sharing, see below)
- Create your own Heroes
- Scenario book after legacy story unfolds
Sidekick Saga is a cooperative, "legacy", "drafting", game of combat and exploration with a ongoing story about Heroes and Villains. Some of these mechanisms are slightly different to work better in a cooperative setting.
Sidekick Saga is not "strictly" a legacy game (because you don't tear up cards or destroy anything), but characters progress and level-up like an RPG, new technologies emerge, and a story unfolds over 6 "Comic Book Issues". It's a "light legacy" or scenario-driven game (as you need to record info between issues). BUT, once you are done, you can reset the game and replay it all over again. AND, after you finish the main plot, there is a Scenario Book for more replayability!
Sidekick Saga is not "strictly" a drafting game (because you don't take one card and pass the rest), but characters share cards with the their neighbors using the Supply Lines. Supply Lines are thematically the Sidekicks shipping technology, weapons, and ideas between each other to help them defeat the Bad Guys! (And it feels a LOT like drafting...)
Sidekick Saga is "strictly" a cooperative game because you all work together to defeat the bad guys!

One morning, the city of New Dover woke up to discover that all the ultra-powerful Heroes had disappeared! Where did they all go? No one seems to know what happened to them! The Gangs, Thugs, Minions, and Villains of New Dover immediately noticed the power vacuum in the city and began to assert themselves. The city is reeling from their attacks! What can be done?
The Sidekicks of the Heroes haven't given up the fight! They know they aren't as powerful as the Bad Guys, but they are courageous and resourceful. They know where the Heroes have helpful technologies, weapons, and devices. To help each other out, the Sidekicks have set-up supply lines between themselves to share useful things! They will protect New Dover! And maybe along the way, they can find out what happened to the ultra-powerful Heroes!
This is their story: this is The Sidekick Saga.
Sidekick Saga comes with:
- 1 Box (with an awesome cover by Phil Cho!)
- 342 Cards [120 Location Cards (72 starting), 22 Bad News, 8 Gangs, 3 End of Acts, 16 Heroic Items (4 starting), 30 Powers (8 starting), 1 Supply Lines, 20 Leads, ... the rest in the Adventure decks (Adventure Deck 1 has 106 cards, Adventure Deck 2 has 98 cards)! Each Adventure Deck has per Issue Bad News and Villain Forces and upgrades!]
- 23 Jumbo Cards [5 Villain Cards, 6 Premade and 6 Homemade Character Cards, 1 SOI Chart, 1 City Terror!, 4 Player Summaries]
- 1 Rulebook (28 pages)
- 1 Scenario Book (8 pages)
- 6 Comic Book Issues (ongoing story books, 8 pages each)
- 60 1x1" markers (30 SOI tokens, 26 Peril Tokens, and 4 Xeonite Communicators)
- 10 Standees (6 premade Sidekicks, 4 homemade)
- 6 plastic stands
- 108 POW! tokens (damage counters)
- 1 wooden marker for City Terror!
(Components may change slightly from manufacturing changes, or upgrades from Stretch Goals!)
Modern comic books tend to tell a serialized story over a 6-issue mini-series. Many times, the graphics novels from comic book stores are simply a collection of a 6-issue series of comic books! Each issue typically starts with explanation, has a big fight in the middle, and wind-downs/spin-ups for the next issue!
We wanted Sidekick Saga to have this ethic: playing it is like reading a 6-issue mini-series, but instead of just reading, each player gets to take on the persona of one of the Sidekicks fighting! And a story unwinds over 6 continuing issues ...
Each issue tells the story, describes the set-up (City and the Villain's Forces), and starts you off! If you win, you get to go the next issue! If you lose, you have to try again (with a little extra help). Here is "most" of Issue #1, so you can see what comes in an issue. We have taken out the Sidekicks Win! and Sidekicks Lose! section to eliminate spoilers!
You'll note that each issue has a big warning not to open the issue until you are ready! You need to play the issues in order!
New Dover is being overrun with Bad Guys: Gangs, Thugs, Minions, and Villains!
Each player takes the role of a Sidekick in the game (with a solo player taking the role of 2 Sidekicks).
Each Sidekick has very different Powers which requires very different strategies to win! For example, Blackbird is a Scientist (allowing him to operate complex machinery) and is adept at Krav Maga (for attacks)! Here's what Blackbird's character card look like:
Each character has two Powers, a "Level 1" side and a "Level 2" side. As you progress in the game, you skills improve!
Here's all 4 characters unlocked at the start of the game:
After you have played through the legacy game (issues 1-6), there is a scenario book with 5 Scenarios (more if we make some stretch goals). There will be 30 powers unlocked after you have played all the way through! With those, you can decide to create your own Heroes to play the scenarios! Included are sheets for you to fill in and make your own Heroes!
UPDATE: We will be adding outlines to the Homemade Character Cards so players can use those as templates when they create their own Hero! Here's what we have so far!
As you play Sidekick Saga, your character will go into Hero form to go into Combat and Secret Identity form to do research!
In Sidekick Saga, our intrepid Sidekicks are nowhere near as strong as all the Bad Guys in the game, so they have to be clever and search for items to help them! In Secret ID form, they can avoid combat (until they are ready) and do research getting Leads!
Leads are like clues: they help you explore deeper into a city Location, or can help you find some very valuable Heroic Items!
In Sidekick Saga, the Sidekicks explore the city, looking for stuff the ultra-powerful Heroes left behind. They needs to find anything they can to help them defeat the Bad Guys!
Sidekicks collect whatever they can find in the City to help them: Leads, One-Shots, Ongoing, and Item cards! (Every Location starts with 8 cards: each Location has a variety of cards there, but they are thematic to the Location!)
... or if they are lucky, they can get enough Leads to find the truly epic Heroic Items!
There are a total of 16 Heroic Items in the game, but you only know about 4 at the start!
The set-up is handled in the first few pages of rulebook (here).
You can also see a You-Tube video describing the Set-Up here (with special guest, Amethyst Arrow)
Each game also includes 4 Summary Sheets (1 for each player), describing how the game flows:
You can also look at this You Tube video which describes how to play: it take you through the first few rounds.
Here's a full play-thru of the first issue: spoilers! We lose by 1 point in the final turn!
An important piece of the game is combat: The Sidekicks will be battling the Bad Guys!
Delphi (on the Streets) wants to attack the Bruiser (in the Suburbs). Delphi's Range is 0, but she has nothing to increase her Range. She fails a Range Check and cannot Attack the Bruiser.
So, on her turn, Delphi moves to the Suburbs---Delphi is now on the same Location as the Bruiser. A Range Check (of 0) will succeed! During the Combat Phase, she knows she can Attack!
Delphi checks conditions: nothing (such as Protection) prohibits her from attacking the Bruiser [The Bruiser is a Thug and NOT in the VIllain's Protection hierarchy!]
Delphi computes her (physical) Attack: Her base is 2. She also has a Boomerang (found in the Caves) which she discards for another +1 to her Attack. Delphi's full attack value is 3.
The Bruiser's Defense is 1. No other modifiers. The Bruiser's full defense value is 1.
Delphi does 3 - 1 = 2 Damage. The Bruiser has 3 Hit Points, and takes 2 Damage: use the POW! tokens to notate this damage!!!
The Bruiser is still going strong and is alive for another Turn (yes, damage persists). If he takes 1 damage next Turn, the Bruiser will be defeated.
Hack Attacks are a little different ... see the rulebook, page 17!

Sidekick Saga has been is development and playtest for the last 1.5 years!
We have done a lot of testing! Internal, UNPUB, Nukestock, Isle of Games! We've also done blind playtesting in cities all over the Southwest: Tucson, Las Cruces, Phoenix, and San Jose!
The AMAZING ART we have comes courtesy:
- Phil Cho (covers, Sidekicks, background, and most Bad Guys)
- William Rodrigues Liberto (Heroic Items, RIFT, and RIFT's Villain Forces, and other Villain Forces)
- Cristina Murphy (Misc. Villain Forces and Backgrounds)
We'd also like to thanks for these wonderful people for Graphic Design:
- Chris Chamberlin
- Jon Goodell
- Emily Kutzler
- Sheila McGiniss
We'd also like to thank
- Beverly Kerns (for the Video work)
- Sam Kerns (for audio work, playtesting, demoing at Dice Tower Con West, etc)
- Jule Schulick (for website, and misc help!)
- Andrew Anderson, Kurt Depner, Zack Gibbs (for helping us demo at Dice Tower Con West)
NONE of this could have been done without them! Thanks so much to them!
Risks and challenges
So, this is my second Kickstarter. I delivered my first Kickstarter *early* (yes, early) to all my backers!
The base game is done and solidly tested, and we are in the process of playtesting the new content for the stretch goals. We hope to have the stretch goal content fully playtested by the end of the campaign so that if they fund, we can start production as soon as possible.
My hope is to deliver early as well, but we'll see. We are using FunAgain for fulfillment and Panda Games for manufacturing: they both have a good record, but anyone who's seen Kickstarters know that things slip. We have built the schedule expecting delays, so if everything goes perfectly, we will deliver early. If we only fund at the minimum levels, we will be using either Gamescrafter or GamelandUS for manufacturing.
I plan to have an update at least once a month (I like how GreaterThanGames does that), more when there's news. I plan to stay active on BoardGameGeek, answering rules questions (see my presence on CO-OP: the co-op game) even after fulfillment. I also hope to offer expansions if it goes well ...Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
