Lore of Stygian
In those cold northern lands, a cursed piece of earth, a sacred city was built. Created to fight the creatures that rise each night there, Stygian is a defence bastion against the necromantic forces that inhabit the mouth of Styx river. For many of its residents, knowing that they are doing good, that they defend life and that they are fulfilling their gods’ plan is more than enough to live there. However, that is not enough for some of them. They go to the city because the best soldiers have trained there, as surviving in this city for five years guaranties that they will be allowed to join any city’s army in the world. By divine order, fate or wishes of glory, every warrior has a place in Stygian.
As centuries go on, the city has gotten bigger, attracting all kind of traders. In this city’s port they always sell all their supplies, weapons, shields and food they carried in their holds. Trade routes on solid ground are also profitable, there are villages only a day away from the city, like Einsborg and Thüringer. These towns sell a big amount of their crops to the city, so it can provide for all their needs in return.
Stygian is divided in five districts, north, south, west, the castle and the forgotten district.
The northern district and the castle are reserved for the nobility and those who have proved a real commitment to the city. They are also the places where distinguished visitants of the city stay. They are the safest districts, full of great heroes and warlords.
The western and south districts are for commoners, people passing by and traders. People who have not proven loyalty to the city yet, who are passing by or who have simply stayed there without being able to go anywhere else. Some organisations, as Giruvergan’s Acolytes, are more active in these districts, where it is easier to trick people and to take advantage of the unease the first nights cause the newcomers. The southern district is the Orphans headquarters, the best fighters of the city, raised since childhood to protect the king and obey his orders. These warriors are in charge of taking the new citizens to the palisade to train them in armed combat, to be able to guarantee their survival in the night time sieges. in Stygian everyone must contribute something to the fight against the undead.
The forgotten district is the most dangerous of them all. It is underground and it is the sewage system and the city’s deposit. At first, it was created out of necessity, it’s so old there aren’t any maps of it and it was created so unexpectedly it does not have a logical structure at first sight. Here, creatures walk freely; you can hear the mild buzzing of the beholders on occasions, as well as the moaning of the undead who have found refuge from sunlight there. This district has changed, not only because of human doing, but because of the creatures that inhabit its core, creating labyrinths filled with dangers. Some smugglers and other banned organisations use this fear of the channels to keep the guards away from their felonies.
After two centuries of existence, Stygian has become a fundamental city to the world. A place where enemy kingdoms can go and talk as equals, a place where trade is profitable and money flows, a bastion of hope for those who know the right way.
The sacred city, the cursed land.
