Bete Noir is a revenge story set in a world where the age of heroes has been long forgotten. A catastrophe years prior has forced the costumed, both hero and villain alike, out of the light and into the shadows.
One man returns from legend to punish those responsible. The most feared vigilante of days past, The Djinn. Back from supposed death to exact revenge on his betrayers. But is the man in the costume the same as he was all those years ago - or is he something altogether….different?
Our mysterious vigilante sets out on his path to right the wrongs of the past - finding himself caught in the crosshairs of both friends and foes alike. Fighting tooth and nail to uncover a dark secret that has left the heroes and villains of days gone by either dead, or running scared.
Bete Noir #1 launches the first part in a 6-issue series that delves into themes of morality, corruption and redemption - set against the background of larger than life characters in capes who wear their underwear on the outside - but their true motivations on the inside.
This is a story best described as a cross between PAYBACK, RED, JOHN WICK, and POLAR, by way of...ok yes, the guy who dresses like a flying rat and punches clowns.
So, if you like stories about righting wrongs (or wronging rights) uncovering mysteries or just men in capes kicking people in the head, this could be the book for you!
Bete Noir issue 1 is a 28 page full-colour comic book. Artwork on the book is 50% completed - this campaign is to raise funds to finish the interiors, cover printing and distribution costs.
Along with the full colour printed version - we will be offering a digital-only "Noir" edition - which features a Kickstarter exclusive, unlettered, black and white version of artist Kris Wantowhy's amazing, atmospheric artwork.
Andrew is a writer from the UK known for his sci-fi action comedy Star-Bastard, published by Scout Comics. Bete noir is his second book launched via kickstarter. He has two cats, a chihuahua, one human child and a wife who very kindly allows him to write comics.
Kriswhantowhy is an Artist from Indonesia, who has worked on a number of independent comics for various different publishers around the world. He works in traditional pencil and ink , enjoys spicy food and is particularly partial to drawing comics about men in capes punching people and/or robots.
Hde is a sophisticated lettering A.I. from the UK with countless small press and Indie projects under his robotic belt. When he isn't putting words on peoples pages and correcting the horrendous errors in comic scripts about men punching space dinosaurs, he also runs a successful Youtube Channel devoted to gaming.
This is clone 234 of Matthew Hardy. Matthew is the editor of Bete Noir and writer of many comic titles such as Madhouse, Last Exit to Brighton, Murder Most Mundane and Cadavers. Each batch of clones significantly increases their genetic addiction to cola flavoured jellies and bacon crisps, and they are burning out at a staggering rate. But man are we getting some good comics out of it. Having been a fan of Andrew's writing for years - Matt has been involved with Bete Noir from the early scripting stages and is thrilled that Andrew has chosen Mad Robot Comics to publish his work. This bio was written by a clone.
As a Kickstarter exclusive, we have a fantastic variant cover from cover artist Sachi Ediriweera, with colours from Dan Lee.
Tiers include extras such as Digital Wallpapers for your desktop or mobile device, an audio commentary featuring Andrew rambling on about the production process (or perhaps just 30 minutes of why Ulysses 31 was a masterpiece), and other features that will be unlocked as we hit certain milestones.
We have a number of prints available, with more being unlocked as we hit backer milestones. The first print on offer is this fantastic pulp cover from series artist Kris Wantowhy.
STRETCH GOALS ADDED!
Because of the campaign's success, we've added more prints! At 175 backers we unlock an awesome pinup by Clark Bint, and if we hit our first stretch goal of £3000 every backer at a physical pledge tier gets an awesome bookplate from concept artist Keith Seymour!
We are also offering tiers that include terrible sketches from Andrew (we can't stress enough the fact he is the writer, not the artist here). Plus, our top tiers include Star-Bastard Blank sketch variants from Andrews Private stash (not available anywhere else) that he will scribble on for your enjoyment!
We also have original pages of Star-Bastard artwork, from series artist Jethro Morales!
(Pages available from issues 1 and 2. Full list of available pages on request)
Plus, everyone who backs the "Total Utter Revenge" tier and above get their books signed by Andrew and also get this nifty cut out Djinn mask!
Our top tier includes a custom made 1:12 scale Djinn Action Figure (in Noir Greyscale). Only 2 of these will be produced and will be exclusive to this campaign.
