Publishing a beautiful annotated print edition of Moby-Dick, based on the popular PowerMobyDick.com website.

The aim of this project is to produce a beautiful, annotated, limited edition of Moby-Dick to be published as part of the marathon reading event at the Merseyside Maritime Museum in Liverpool in May 2013.

I am working with Margaret Guroff, the editor of the excellent Power Moby-Dick edition to bring her brilliant web resource to print, including not only its extensive annotations, but also historic illustrations of whales and whaling. The book will be produced in paperback and a beautiful limited-edition hardback, both featuring a cover design you see previewed here, created by Robyn Ng. These books will make a great gift.

Both books will have a page size of 246x189mm, in portrait orientation, and will be printed on 90gsm matt art paper, which feels great as well as being strong and long lasting. At around 450 pages this will be a big book, so I've specified a sewn binding for strength.

The paperback will have a full-colour, gloss-laminated cover on 240gsm card, while the limited-edition hardback will have 2.25mm boards covered with Wibalin (a high quality linen-effect covering frequently used on high-quality books), head and tail bands, and the title foil-blocked on the spine. It will be finished off with a full colour gloss-laminate dust jacket. The books will be designed and produced by BBR.

Publishing a fine edition of this novel has been a dream of mine for a long time, and the Power Moby-Dick version lends itself exactly to this kind of book. We are hoping it will also prove invaluable to educators, perhaps to use alongside the website as a classroom resource.

The plan is to publish the edition as part of the marathon reading of Moby-Dick which I am organising on behalf of the University of Liverpool at the Merseyside Maritime Museum in Liverpool on May 4th-6th, 2013. The funding target includes production and printing costs for 500 copies, UK shipping, and Kickstarter fees. Any profits from the project will go towards events connected with the marathon weekend.

Shipping

UK shipping is included. If you want the book shipped internationally, we will do that for you, but you'd have to pay any extra cost via Paypal. Each book will weigh roughly a kilo, or just over two pounds, which should give you an idea how much that will cost for your region. I anticipate it being around an extra £10 for the USA, for example. I will ask for the names to be included in the book, and shipping addresses, after the campaign ends, and ask for the relevant amount to be sent by PayPal closer to the shipping date.

Headwinds

Any edition of Moby-Dick has to compete with free on the Internet, so the challenge is to make a book that is a lovely thing in itself, laid out and typeset properly, and printed on good-quality paper with good-looking art work. But I'm a writer and editor, not a book designer, and book design is a difficult thing. I am therefore working with experienced designers and book production experts BBR to make this edition one of the best available.

FAQ

  • The plan is to present the annotations as closely as possible to the way they appear on the website, so to the side of the text. We have chosen a fairly large format for the book--it will be roughly the size of an iPad--in order to do that, while keeping a large amount of white space. The beauty of the PowerMobyDick.com site is that it doesn't interrupt the reading, and the aim is to do the same with the book. That's why I am referring to this as a 'readers' edition'.
