BORN TO BE MAGIC is the first novel in the Council Witch series. Action-packed and full of sass, it placed second in the 2014 Zebulon Awards for the sci-fi/fantasy category and garnered a perfect score for writing. Readers of Faith Hunter, Patricia Briggs, and Ilona Andrews are sure to love this book. It is complete, having undergone multiple revisions and critiques, and ready for final production.

It's like Law & Order, but with witchcraft.

Rachel Collins isn’t sure sarcasm is an actual method of self-defense, but she keeps testing the theory. As a deputy working for the High Council of Witches, it’s her job to keep the supernatural in line and protect humanity from the things they don’t know exist. It’s dangerous, and not just because a Walking Dead reject might eat her face. If she uses too much power, she could become a monster herself.

It's all magical forensics and arresting perps for dealing with demons until Rachel’s brother disappears, kidnapped by someone sending her a very particular message. Defying the Council’s order to stay off her brother’s case, Rachel hides her witchy identity from the demon hunter Sean—which definitely has nothing to do with how hot he is—and strikes a deal to save her brother. Unfortunately, their plan risks corrupting Rachel's soul, a grievous offense in the eyes of the Council. Now she’ll have to prove she’s not hellbound—or suffer the same brand of justice she used to serve.

Funding

Funding for this project will go towards professional editing, cover design, hardcopy production of 150 books, getting the ISBN number and a Kirkus review, and some swag for conventions. The novel itself is already written--it's just awaiting its chance to dive into your hands!

About the Author

Writer, speaker, geek. I write urban fantasy and YA, and am a purveyor of real-life magic. Powered by caffeine, ridiculousness, and charm. Proud indigenous.

I split my time between Japan, where I am currently an English teacher, and Denver, where I spent many a year as a marketing director. I have owned my own company, designing promotional campaigns for both authors and businesses. I earned my Master’s degree from the University of Denver and hold undergraduate degrees from The Pennsylvania State University, and have worked for everything from political campaigns to game design companies. I have published original research on online user behavior, and present to national conferences on how social media really is more than just cat videos. When I'm not writing or working, I spend time exploring Japan; playing with my two cats and dog; playing the cello; gaming; doing outdoorsy stuff; and avoiding adult life as much as possible. A two-time Zebulon Award winner, I am currently working on my sixth novel, a Dine-inspired YA paranormal called SKY MARKED, and I belong to Pikes Peak Writers and Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers, as well as the crucial-to-my-success critique group, Highlands Ranch Fiction Writers.

Risks and challenges

Risks:

#1 What if the book isn't finished?

While the novel has undergone several rounds of high-level critique, it has yet to be professionally edited. The required edits could take longer than I anticipate to incorporate, which would delay delivery. I've been writing for over ten years and never failed to complete a project. I've written four other novels, so I am very comfortable with the demands of writing and editing, and due to the work that's already gone into the book, big structural changes are unlikely.

#2 What if the books don't get printed?

I'll be using CreateSpace, which has a long history of print-on-demand fulfillment. They have a solid reputation and are used by many indie authors.

#3 What if the digital copies are messed up or I mislabel the addresses?

I've worked in marketing for a long time, including batching out hundreds of orders for various products, both digital and physical. I'm very meticulous and put my whole self into anything I do. If any mistakes are made, they will be rectified right away.

#4 What if I can't write?

As I mentioned, the novel has not only undergone many reviews already by some pretty sharp sources, but it placed second in the 2014 Zebulon Awards, a writing contest held by Pikes Peak Writers. The novel garnered a perfect score for writing, and will be professionally edited before it ships.

Challenges:

I work a full-time job, so I write in my spare time. Thus, time management is a considerable component to success. However, as I mentioned, I've been writing for a long time and have completed multiple projects, so I am confident in my ability to deliver.
