"Catalina and the King’s Wall" will be a book for kids that tells the story of a baker named Catalina and her zany plans to stop the king from building a wall around his kingdom. Kids will hear the story of Catalina welcoming everyone to the kingdom by removing literal and figurative walls.
I was inspired to write this book after I took my son to my local women’s march in January 2017 following the combative U.S. presidential election. I stood with him on that cold and snowy day and wondered: What kind of world was he born into? How will he learn to always be kind? I was deeply concerned, yet hopeful because of the turnout at the march. I wrote my book to help parents discuss these questions with their kids in a fun story format that children can relate to.
I would love for all kids to hear the story of a persistent cookie baker named Catalina and how she never gave up on seeing her family again.
Because kids should know that everyone is important.
Kids should know how to champion diversity and equality.
Kids should know that anyone can be a heroine.
Above all, kids should know that we can all be a part of making our world better for everyone in it.
The book was accepted for traditional publication by a small publishing house with big ideas, called Eifrig Publishing - https://www.eifrigpublishing.com
We’ve got the words and the art. Now I need funding for publicity and marketing.
We are not allowed to fundraise directly for charity on Kickstarter. Separately from Kickstarter, I will personally donate a portion of the the proceeds to local refugee organizations (http://www.jannus.org/msg-programs/).
The 32-page hardcover book will measure 11.5 x 8 inches, and will be a beautifully printed, bound, high-quality keepsake publication.
The book will be filled with words by Patty Costello (that's me!) and original artwork by renowned Romanian illustrator Diana Cojocaru (https://www.behance.net/drawnbydi). It tells the story of Catalina the baker and the clever (and silly) ways she thwarts the cookie-loving king's plans to build a wall around his kingdom. There’s even a surprise ending!
Pre-sales for the book started January 20th, 2018 (the anniversary of the biggliest inauguration in history) and official sales will start May 5th, 2018 (honoring Cinco de Mayo).
In the meantime, I need help to get the word out! Publishers increasingly rely on authors to do publicity and marketing for their books; these are not my strong suits, so I will be hiring professionals. I’ve already invested a significant amount of my personal funds in order to submit a professional book plan to Eifrig Publishing. Now I could use some help with the next steps of marketing and publicity. Please see the FAQ area for more details.

Risks and challenges
There are low risks, beyond upsetting a certain segment of people with different views, and no anticipated big challenges. In my professional life, I have an excellent track record of completing big projects on deadline. The manuscript is already done (it took many drafts to get it perfect!) and so is the art, and I have the next steps of the process thoroughly researched and planned. Let's do this!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
