About this project
You're The Best!!!
Let's start this off with a look at Tom Vasel's original Review of the game...
"I am thoroughly enjoying the game. GREAT job on marrying the theme to game play!" - Greg J. Schloesser, Counter Magazine
"It's a banner of what a Kickstarter game should be" -- "Components are great" -- "Artwork is really good" -- "Super Flavorful" - Joel Eddy, Drive Through
"I played Police Precinct a bunch... Given how much we liked the base game, I'm sure it will do well." - Geof Gambill, The Long View (commenting on The Heat's prospects)
We are trying to make Police Precinct even better. If you just watched Tom's review, now try to imagine what he might say about the 2nd Edition.... Fun to think about!
The focus of this project is the making, or should we say "re-making," of the game Police Precinct!
If you have been following the history of this game, you might already know that along with the successes have come some challenges. One such challenge was the unfortunate "Melt-Down." Referring to the hard-drive of the computer that housed the only copy of the game files.
This Melt-Down occurred at the best AND worst time possible. Right as the PDFs were being sent to the factory for production. The good news of this timing is that PDFs do actually exist and can be used to slowly piece the game back together. The bad news of the timing was that in the confusion of this situation, errors were made. An important part of of this 2nd Edition is to fix those errors.
Beyond this, we want to take certain parts of the game and change them in ways that we feel with improve the experience. How much of this we can afford to do will depend in part on YOU. So far we have begun work on the Event Deck, the Crime Track, and the Rulebook. We may end up doing more. This depends on certain factors such as, how much support we get from you (backers), and on what expansions, etc. we decide to focus on. Backer support on this Kickstarter will boost our ability to make these types of improvements to the brand Police Precinct. We are even looking at coming out with a stand-alone lightening-fast dice driven version of the game. Stay Tuned!
We invite you to join in the movement to make Police Precinct all it can be by backing this project. Everything helps!
Let's take a look at the differences between the two editions:
1. TIMING: The 1st Edition has already been released, whereas the 2nd is being developed as we speak, with delivery to Kickstarter backers in late 2014 (best estimate).
2. AVAILABILITY: The 1st is effectively gone (finding a copy at this point is very difficult), BUT we DO have a tiny supply still available, Click Here for details. On the other hand, the 2nd edition is available via this Kickstarter.
3. CRIME TRACK: Jeff B. Designed a really cool version, and we intend to use it for the 2nd.
4. RULEBOOK: We (also with the help of Jeff, and many great editors) have made a big push to improve the rulebook.
5. RULES CHANGES: Though the rulebook itself is greatly improved, (including clarifications about certain rules) there are NO CHANGES to the actual rules for how to play the game.
6. TYPOS: Due to the Melt-Down, some mistakes occurred in different parts of the game (misspellings, etc). We are determined to correct any such errors.
7. MORE: It is possible that we might do more changes (double-sided tokens, etc.), BUT, that depends on a whole host of variables. Some of this will likely be figured out DURING this Kickstarter.
8. BOARD: There have been some rumors that the 2nd edition will have a smaller board, but NO, this is not something we are considering.
9. POST CAMPAIGN: Click Here for info on what other changes are developing after this Kickstarter ends. The page you will land on includes all sorts of info about the Post-Campaign developments (not just changes to the game, check it out!).
10. NEW ART: Most of the art will remain as-is, but we are making a few changes. Here is a new Patrol Officer George made...
Bottom-Line is, we are changing enough that we will need a new one o' these...
Backers please meet the new bar code!
It's BIG, and that won't change!!! (24” x 36”)
"I like the artwork on the board" - Joel Eddy, Drive Through
Here is how Block 6 of the 1st Edition board looked...
A glimpse of where we're going with the revised board (also block 6)...
A big part of this campaign is about us LISTENING to YOU.
Do you have some thoughts about The Board?
If so, Click Here!
Beyond just the 2nd Edition, YES you DO have options. Let's take a look at some of the items you can get through this Kickstarter...
We think you will find The Heat to be a great addition to Police Precinct, and YES it is available through this Kickstarter. To get a better idea of what it's all about, you may find it helpful to see the video we used on the other Kickstarter campaign, click HERE!
GAME BOY GEEK
Check out this review by The Dice Tower's own Dan King AKA "Game Boy Geek"
"Very nice addition!"
"I dig it!"
"They'll be used every time I play."
"The game is so hard I HAVE TO play with these!"
-- Bart Brunscheen
Includes a very funny story told in classic Chief Style (you gotta hear this).
There is a new review that just came out, and should be on the BGG later today. It's done by Derek Mirdala / Webdanzer. This is his very first video review ever, and I thought he did a great job. So check the video section of the Police Precinct page on BGG for this when you have a chance.
By the way, we are sending Derek 14 of the 15 Additional Event Cards (not included in the base-game) in hopes that this will be his next review. This package includes The Mad Men, The Rocket Launcher, Rioting Gangs, and The Dirty Bomb.
Click here to see the BGG thread that got Derek started as a reviewer.
We think you will also enjoy this addition to Police Precinct, and YES it will be available through this Kickstarter:
1. Three Rioting Gang Event Cards (Yellow, Red, Blue).
2. Four Special Event Cards (Street Collapse, Caught In The Act, Homicidal Maniac, Budget Cuts).3. Revised Car Theft Event Card (1st Edition fix).
4. Compass Sticker (1st Edition fix).
Rioting Gangs represent the new style of Event Cards which will be used for the 2nd Edition. These cards are now flowing into the hands of those who backed our other Kickstarter, and here are some of their thoughts...
"My biggest fear about this whole thing is that the cards wouldn't match. So I am so glad they do. I've gotten... expansions where the cards don't match up. And it sucks. Good job on the card matching."
"Everything looks great! Thanks for getting this out for the holidays!"
"Expansion arrived safely in Copenhagen today! Looks good - I cannot tell original and new cards apart. Great work!"
We have completely redesigned the rulebook for Police Precinct, and we're making it available to anyone who wants it.
This item was designed specifically for owners of the 1st edition. The 2nd Edition will include a rulebook which is VERY similar this this one, so if you are getting the 2nd Edition, you certainly don't need this.
Some have pointed out how nice it is to have an extra rulebook floating around the table when playing a game. So to this, we say...
The more the merrier!
Dan King Speaks:
Here is what Dan King, AKA "Game Boy Geek", said about this rulebook recently...
"Wow I must say it's 100 times better than the original rule book!"
Dan is a very good and fair critic, and though he loved many of the aspects of Police Precinct, he was harsh about a few things. One of those things was the rulebook. We used his input and that of others and make what we feel is a great rulebook!
When Dan speaks, we listen. The rulebook was not Dan's only complaint about the 1st Edition. For example, Dan really wanted to see pre-designed levels of difficulty for the game. We have subsequently incorporated this into BOTH the base-game AND The Heat. We think that the 2nd Edition will be great. Many have played critical roles in this, but certainly a big thanks goes out to Dan!
Other Reviewers Speak:
"Received the package yesterday. The rules look great." - The Chief
The new style of rulebook is now flowing into the hands of Kickstarter backers from our other Kickstarter that recently ended (for The Heat), and here are some of their thoughts on the revised rulebook...
"This new rule book is fabulous and I am so glad I decided to include that in my pledge! The layout and references are great. Well done!"
"Everything looks amazing"
"Ooooo, the rule book. Love it!... Nice work!"
"My copy arrived yesterday!! Fantastic!!"
"I love the New rule book. Nice stuff."
"Just got mine yesterday. Everything looks great!"
"The new rule book is exceptional: well organized and clear. The 'insider letter' on the front is a nice touch. In short, this is a professional job."
"I received my Heat expansion and revised rule book for Police Precinct... When I first played Police Precinct, I thought, this is the most realistic police game I've played. I should know, my day job is working as a Crime Analyst in a homicide unit... I just wanted to thank all of you for producing a fantastic game, and continuing to support the product. Keep up the great work!"
(Note that some of the above quotes are very specifically speaking about the Rulebook, while others are more generalized and in regard to The Kit, which includes the Rulebook, Rioting Gangs, The Heat, etc.)
The Mad Men have been around for a while now, and have proved quite popular, and YES "they" will be available through this Kickstarter.
There are a couple of fun promo Event Cards available via this campaign (Rocket Launcher and Dirty Bomb).
Joining the Club requires a $66 pledge, or you can pledge more if you want a higher level, and/or something shipped to you.
The best way to explain all of your options is to go here.
(sorry for the extra step, but it turns out to be necessary because this page has reached the maximum allowable size = 35,000 characters, WOW!)
This whole section of our Kickstarter page had to be moved to the CMG website due to the 35,000 character Wall!
Click here to see all the info about what's coming up!
We will leave these 2nd Edition Event Card Images up...
January 2nd is the day we reached our funding goal of $25,000.
Where can we go from here?
How about some Stretch Goals!?!
With the 2nd Edition we have a chance to go back in time and do things a little differently (It's like having a "re-do" button!): We can fix errors, make changes that enhance the playing experience, add even more fun theming, enhance the graphics, and...
SG#1 = Double Sided Tokens / 30K
We have been listening to YOU, the fans of the game, and YOU want double-sided tokens, so...
Since this project reached $30,000 YOU will get exactly what you've been wishing for.
Great job backers, you did it!!!
(This item will go to ALL backers who pledged to receive the 2nd Edition.)
SG#2 = DOUBLE-SIDED BOARD / 35K
We think it would be awesome to do some work on the game board. Doing this offers several exciting directions for us to go in.
Possibly a new look, possibly a new configuration, and maybe both!
If we reach this Stretch Goal, the 2nd Edition will have a two-sided board.
To see the ongoing discussion about this topic, Click Here!
(This item will go to ALL backers who pledged to receive the 2nd Edition.)
SG#3 = PLASTIC INSERT / 42K
We here at CMG know that the storage solution offered in the 1st Edition was not the greatest, and how nice it would be to have a plastic insert. Doing this is an expensive prospect and could also result in the need for a bigger box, which would further add to costs, but now YOU (the backers) can now help make this possible.
(This item will go to ALL backers who pledged to receive the 2nd Edition.)
Is this really a Stretch Goal that will serve us well?
We here at CMG think, YES, but...
One backer brought up some interesting points, and we want to hear what YOU have to say, so come join the discussion, by clicking here!
SG#4 = NAKED GUY / 45K
What? What's that? Give me a second, and I will get to that. First let me say a couple things...
1. HUMOR: On one hand Police Precinct is a serious game used for serious purposes (like training real cadets!), but it is also a game that can have fun and share a laugh or two ("Donuts" and "Punks", need I say more).
2. UPGRADING: If we reach this Stretch Goal we will deliver the "Naked Guy", but also upgrade the Murder Board, and the Crime Track (going to a beefier stock). OK, now to this Naked Guy...
He will be the focus of a Special Event Card (or a green Emergency possibly). We would likely NOT include this IN the game, but rather tape the card to the outside of the box (and extra copies shall be made to later make available to 1st Edition owners and used as a promo-card at shows, etc.).
Credit goes to the reviewer known as "The Chief" (who is a real cop), who once told a funny real-life story of a naked guy running in traffic (which inspired this card).
(This item will go to ALL backers who pledged to receive the 2nd Edition.)
SG#5 = MORE MINI-CARDS / 53K
For those not yet familiar with the game, there are 2 sizes of cards. We have done a lot already to increase the size of the Event Deck (larger card), but what about the smaller decks!?! The smaller cards are used for: Police Cards, Gang Cards, and the assorted Evidence Decks.
If we can reach this goal, CMG will add more of the smaller cards.
If we reach $53,000, then we will add a card for every $1,000 of funding that comes in since the $45,000 mark. This will continue on until we reach...
A new small card for every $1,000, no matter how high we go.
These new cards will be a mini-deck which is handled outside the shrink of the game itself, which means that YES we would be able to make them available to 1st Edition owners. We would also make them available in other assorted ways (at shows, via BGG Store, as add-ons with future KS campaigns, etc.).
What exactly will these cards be?
Good question! There are lots of options, and we (CMG) will study the whole big picture after the campaign is over. What we end up with will partly depend on how many cards we're talking about (which won't be known until the KS is over). It will likely affect (add-to) a mix of different decks. We will attempt to provide the cards that we think make the most sense and will provide the most fun/replayability/challenge/etc.
Yes, we DO want to hear your input! The feedback of the fans of the game has positively impacted the game MANY times already, and again now sounds great to us! Click here to be heard.
(This item will go to ALL backers who pledged to receive the 2nd Edition.)
SG#6 = TBD / 62K
The plan is to roll out a series of Stretch Goals for this campaign. This will either happen one goal at a time (to be announced shortly after the prior one is reached), or possibly by doing it all-at-once, where we lay-out everything up-front.
Exactly how this plays-out will partly depend on the critical resource of "time", which is in short supply right now. We are a small company, and have to focus on several things during this campaign (Stretch Goals being one of those), but we do not want to neglect other issues. The key is to maintain balance so that YOUR needs are ultimately met in a nice way.
Do you want a more in-depth look at this whole topic of Stretch Goals?
If so, CLICK HERE!
(Any and all Stretch Goals will be included for ALL backers who pledged to receive the 2nd Edition.)
A big part of this campaign is about us LISTENING to YOU. Do you have some thoughts about Stretch Goals you want to see? If so, CLICK HERE!
Now we have your attention!!!
If you get a Package Deal through this Kickstarter (a combination of a Kit and the 2nd Edition), then you will not get anything shipped to you until the 2nd edition is ready.
This is being done in fairness to the backers who paid more for these items a la carte.
You can get your Kit sent out early if you want to make a change in your pledge level. For details on how to do this, click here!
If you do not take action, and leave your pledge as-is, there is good news and bad.
The good news is that you are saving money by doing a combo deal.
The bad news is that (and this is why we're making such a big point about this now), you might find it painful to see the Kits readily available in stores BEFORE you even get yours.
So what should you do if you have a "Package Deal"?
Well, that is a very personal question, and one for which there is NO right or wrong answer. The fact is, there are a multitude of pros and cons built into whatever direction you choose on this matter.
Want to learn more about this whole topic of reward delivery? If so, click here.
UPDATE: Today is January 7th, and all of the information listed here (above) is all NEW. We are dramatically speeding up delivery times on certain items in this campaign. It is a very exciting time to be involved with this project. Stay Tuned!
We are doing some really exciting things with the SPEED that we deliver rewards. Just for fun, check out what Tom Vasel said in his morning news show about this (Click Here, and forward the video to 6.5 minutes in).
Note: When you read the schedule below, and then compare it to the delivery dates listed on most of the Kits (and Kit components) you might begin to wonder why those dates are so different than what is listed below. The reason for this is that it is impossible to change a delivery date (and most everything else about a reward level) once anyone has backed it. So for example, the Canadian Kits will NOT arrive in December of 2014, instead we will ship them next month (Feb 2014).
For a couple of critical reasons, we have moved the official schedule OFF this page and over to the CMG website, click here.
Curious to know why?
1. OVERLOAD: We hit the 35,000 character Kickstarter wall! This means that we overloaded our page and were forced to remove certain items to make room for more new items (Stretch Goals, News, etc.). This section was an easy target because it was so big and because it should be moved anyway (see reason #2).
2. CURRENT: We hope to keep the schedule in a place where we CAN keep the information current. It's impossible to edit a Kickstarter page AFTER the campaign ends. Since we hope to beat the schedule in terms of delivery speed, by keeping the information on our website, we have the ability to update everything if this happens. With all this in mind, we feel like leaving the info here on the Kickstarter page will ultimately lead to a significant amounts of misinformation, confusion, and frustration.
This section is particularly for the benefit of folks who have come to this campaign page in the past, and return wondering "what is new and interesting" since they last visited.
We are placing the most recent items at the top as follows...
POST KS INFO
Of course there are always "Updates" that will come periodically to backers via Kickstarter, BUT... What if you missed the Campaign or want more info between updates? For this, we have set-up a Post Campaign info site on the CMG website, Click Here!

We are trying to beat our own speed record for delivering rewards. It's an interesting story to follow as it unfolds, for more info click Here.
We have quoted backers on this main Kickstarter page in assorted places (e.g. - the Rulebook section), but at times they say things that bear repeating that just don't seem to fit neatly into a particular heading. When this happens, we just might put them here...
"I just want to say that I love the idea that the "early birds" get a discount but those that pledge the standard amount get the game shipped early is an AMAZING idea! I wish more KS campaigns would use that idea. Well done!"
"Just wanted to leave a comment of appreciation for the work CMG is putting into this project. The improvements on the game, the KS campaign, all the BGG threads, and your website."
"That's great about "naked man in traffic", I been in law enforcement now over 30 years and any cop with any time in has a "naked man" story. Can't wait to get the game."
"OK! After going back and forth on the subject for many weeks, I decided to join the campaign. I already own 1st edition and currently play with the Rioting Gangs expansion - having plenty of fun. But I will eventually need the new board and updated cards, so why not support the game directly! Looking forward to seeing the improvements later this year :)"
We appreciate you arriving at the scene of the crime, and for providing needed back-up support for our big Police Raid!

Risks and challenges
We all know of the risks and difficulties associated with attempting to develop a great board game. We are not here to deny these risks exist, but...
We have experience with doing this, and we are confident that we will be able to duplicate our past successes.
We Can (again)...
Present a great idea to YOU through Kickstarter, and then...
Develop it into a finished project, then finally...
Get the game produced, and into your hands in a timely manner.
We have found that through hard work and experience that we can deliver on promises made.
KarlLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
We see this as a critical issue that we won't compromise on.
ALL the editions and expansions WILL match-up.
Meaning, for example...
The 1st edition Event Cards have the same card-backs as the 2nd Edition card-backs. The same goes for the following expansionary items: Mad Men, Rocket Launcher, and Rioting Gangs.
This will hold true for ALL aspects of the game, not JUST the Event Deck.
As for the New Event Deck, it is like a bomb that could explode in our hands if not treated carefully.
Let me explain...
First let me say sorry that this answer is so long. Also I want to mention that this is an issue we have been working on for a long time and one that we take very seriously.
Now for the shocking news…
We might have to produce entire games just to give people the event deck!
I'm sure we can all agree that this is not a good approach (wasteful and expensive).
The factory does not want to do short print runs or to complicate productions, so they basically price it out of being possible to do. We have a few ideas for how this could be done, but as of now we have been unable to get them to agree to these.
They want to see at least 1,000 units in order to do this.
As soon as you hear this, and considering that only 2,500 people have the game, you would likely begin to think that the idea of us moving 1,000 units of a purely aesthetic item is not very likely.
What is likely might be that, if we made these cards available at $19 per deck, that we would ultimately get 100 people to buy (best guess), thus if we pursued this deck as a product that we want to offer our fans, we would generate $1,900 in revenue, but what about the costs associated? Let’s take a look…
We have 4 choices (that I can see):
1. PRINT 1,000: We could do this, and let’s say our cost (all things considered) would be $5,000 - $1,900 = $3,100 loss.
2. PRINT NONE: Meaning that we would offer the product for sale, but print none. This means that we are breaking into a shrink-wrapped copy of Police Precinct each time we want to sell a deck to someone, Let’s say our cost all-in is $23 each x 100 = $2,300 - $1,900 = $400 loss.
3. DON'T OFFER IT: $0 loss.
4. NEGOTIATE: Yes, we are trying to negotiate with them to move toward a better solution (drop the high minimum to something more reasonable, etc.). No luck so far, but I will keep trying.
CATCH-22: When I have discussed this with fans of the game, they have described it as “The Ultimate dilemma” or as “a real catch-22”. I agree, and please know that this is the sort of thing that is going on in the background ALL-THE-TIME, and with all sorts of things.
KICKSTARTER: There are not too many systems that would work as well as Kickstarter (none that I know of) for solving this dilemma. Keep in mind that before we launch a Kickstarter for this, we would likely go to some efforts to try to judge how many people would actually do this, and how people would receive it. This might involve a thread on BGG, or possibly a pole (on BGG). If this resulted in a clear message about how strongly this is desired and that the quantity of people who want this is great enough (enough people actually posted in the thread that “yes” they do want this and would back it). The best time to run this is after the 2nd Edition Kickstarter is over and funded, but BEFORE it is actually printed. Maybe we would set the goal at break even or something, which would be a little under 300 (remember KS takes about 10% in fees)
TWO-SIDED BOARD: I mention this potential item because it is possible that we will be doing that for the 2nd edition. What if we did that, and there were a bunch of other really cool improvements to the game, at what point does it just make more sense to go ahead and get the 2nd edition?
DO THE MATH: Let's say you could sell your 1st Edition copy for $10 (that seems very low, but let's use it). Then you spent $19 to get this deck. Now you are up to $29. Then let's say we sold the cool new Crime Track for $5, and you wanted the awesome Revised rulebook (which we are selling for half price now), so $6. Now you are up to $40, and you see all the other changes (and you want them) so why not just pick up the whole 2nd edition? It's only $50.
NOW TO THE ANSWER: Though the answer is implied at this point, let's actually discuss it. If we offered the Event Deck in this Kickstarter, it would likely not be noticed by many and sales would be low, let's say 100 decks. Well we all know the numbers on 100 decks don't crunch out too well. This would be too bad for CMG, because there would be no way out of the dilemma at that point (we MUST deliver). On the other hand, if we offered it as a completely separate Kickstarter, then it might get a lot more notice (and be more likely to succeed), AND if we don't reach the funding goal then this potential bomb does not blow up. At that point, fans have a choice of sticking with their current Event Deck or getting the 2nd edition if they really want the new Event Deck.
BLANK & NAKED CARDS: Tom H (one of the backers over at The Heat KS) just gave me a great idea. He suggested having some extra blank cards so that YOU can make your own Event Cards (like we did with the Unknown Circumstances Tokens). This is a really fun idea! I'm thinking that if we end up moving forward with this Kickstarter, this alone might be enough to get the funding level where we need it. The other thought is that we could add a new card or two as bonus items (The Naked Guy Card or something like that). Just thinking out-loud here.
The answer to that is...
but that is a very complicated issue, and to get an idea you can read the FAQ on the topic of...
Offering the new Event Deck as a separate item via this Kickstarter (see other FAQ question).
After reading that, you will see just how tricky this can be.
You will also realize that if this is possible to do, that it will happen after the Kickstarter is over and also after the files are complete and submitted to the factory for production.
For a variety of reasons...
The 2nd Edition Board being available to 1st Edition owners to purchase is somewhat MORE likely than the Revised Event Deck (we have more production options that might make this possible).
We do hold out great optimism that this WILL happen!
In BOTH cases.
If so, it will likely be something that is available for purchase via the Pre-Release (well after the Kickstarter and before the Street Date).
If it works out that we can do this, then there is another question to ponder, which is...
If the board is different, and so are the Event Cards and...
The Crime Track, the Murder Investigation Board, the Loyalty Deck, etc etc.
At what point would you just get the 2nd Edition?
Paying for all of the items that have changed might come close to paying for everything except the dice, but maybe we will change the dice too!
Keep in mind that...
Each person's answer to this might be different.
So, how does CMG figure out what the demand is (thus how many to make)?
The bottom line is that we have always in the past, do now, and will in the future...
Factor in the needs of the 1st Edition owners. I have a personal bias that pushes me to value the needs of you-all at an extremely high level because none of this would be possible without you!
We will do our best to pull something off.
And if we can do it, then we will try to get the word out via Kickstarter Updates (all three Kickstarters), and BGG, etc.
This means that you might hear an announcement from us (hopefully before the Street Date) describing what options you do have, and we might be able to get you everything you want!
One more thing, a comment came from one of our great backers (he has actually backer ALL THREE of our Kickstarters so far), and even though I quoted him in the news (you may have seen) I thought his words were so powerful and so very to the point about this subject, that I had to put them here.
OK, take it away...
No, this is an expansion idea for down the road.
The 2nd Edition will have all the same components as the 1st.
We want to keep at the same MSRP, so we plan to keep the component list the same with nothing extra.
The only thing we are even considering that is slightly new or expanded is the idea of possibly doing a 2-sided board.
For more about this, go to the BGG conversation on "The Board"...
The only "no" item we can really think of is the 6th Mad Men Card.
The Deck comes with 6 cards, BUT...
We are committed to not giving out all 6 at one time to anyone.
This is a promise we made to the 1st Edition Kickstarter backers way "back-in-the-day".
We are happy to keep this promise, and very serious about doing so.
That is the only thing we can think of.
We DON'T do this for all of our Kickstarters, but...
With This particular campaign, we are using Kickstarter as a tool to involve the fan base in the creative process. We wanted a long campaign so that there could be a sense of interaction between the creator (Ole & CMG) and the folks who would ultimately use the creation (YOU). We like to blur the line between "you" and "us" as much as we can (when it makes sense to do so).
We like to involve the fan-base in the creative process.
We feel like this campaign is a perfect fit for this approach!
I'm not sure of all the changes that will happen with the game, or how long it will take (exactly) to get to a finished product. This is true partly because when you get a group of people involved in a creative process, it can take you to places you weren't expecting.
If it's done in a positive way and with an open mind, these journeys tend to be quite fun.
I hope YOU join us on this one!
The two main thoughts we have on this "speed" subject are...
1. As I am trying to imply, "we don't want to rush the creative process."
2. We would rather surprise you with faster than expected deliveries of your rewards, rather than the opposite.
I predict that regardless of forecasts, this project will be similar to the average Kickstarter (for a boardgame), in terms of actual duration.
If a backer of this project selects a level that will get them an English version of the 2nd Edition, and this is what they want, BUT...
Later (before the 2nd Edition is ready to ship) it becomes known to that backer that a German version will come be coming out, then...
Can that backer switch to the German Version?
The answer is...
Let's discuss the parameters of this...
The backer will either get a German Version or, if the German version costs more than the amount pledged, then the backer will receive this amount in credit toward a German Version.
The backer will receive the English version as planned unless they take action as follows...
They must notify CMG at least 10 days prior to CMG shipping out copies of the games to the New York Forwarder for BNW.
CMG is not responsible for notifying any backers of any particular news about the German version's development progress (though we will likely do this anyway from time to time).
There is no guarantee that a German Version will ever be published (only a likelihood).
If a backer gives this notification to CMG, and the German version is not ready yet, then they will be put "On-Hold" for the time being. This means that, they will need to wait for the German Version to be ready. They have the right to grow tired of waiting, and can demand a refund if they so choose, but the refund will be for 70% of the amount they pledged on Kickstarter (this is to compensate for the KS fees and high degree of handling between CMG and S-V that this scenario will involve), and will be paid via Paypal.
Also, if that backer had selected to get a Package Deal (receive a Kit also), there will be extra charges for delivery of this Kit (due to the fact that the German version will not ship at the same time or from the same place as the Kit, as would be the case with the English version).
After-all they (and others) are right in Europe!
Is this fair?
The answer is...
It is unfortunate, and NOT something that we are happy about, but...
It does make sense.
Shipping inside the EU is MUCH less expensive and going outside (even if it's just such a short distance) is expensive and requires extra paperwork and handling.
The other issue is that we already have so many regions (USA, Canada, EU, Australia, World-wide) that anymore would add to everyone's costs. Meaning that the complexity of the fulfillment process increases, which adds unseen costs, which means that ALL the pledge levels would need to be raised to compensate for this.
To be perfectly fair to all regions of the world, there really should be about 20 or more shipping zones, but we have to draw the line at some point.
The good news for Europeans who are not a part of the EU can be summed up in one word...
Unlike others (Australians, etc.), you can take a short train ride and land in "Game Heaven!"
We hope that this particular project will move along faster than expected (we do have reason for optimism in this area), and that you WILL be able to pick up a copy of the game at Essen. Hopefully the Kickstarter backers can do this, and even (hopefully) so to can the general public.
So, at least you have that option, and in that sense are very lucky.
Worst case scenario, you can pick up a copy at Essen in 2015 (if you can stand to wait that long to Bust Punks!).
