About this project
I am hugely excited to share my latest, biggest project to date: the Wholesome Child book – a nutritional guide, menu planner and recipe book in one, designed to assist parents to transition their children’s diets to a healthier and more nutritionally balanced, wholesome way of eating. It is a work that has been many, many years in the making and combines more than a decade of my research and knowledge as a paediatric nutritionist and feeding consultant, plus personal experience being a busy working mum of two gorgeous, highly spirited and sometimes fussy kids. The strategies and recipes contained in this book have been embraced by many of my clients and attendees of the regular nutritional seminars I run, with amazing and inspirational results... my hope is now to share these with you too. ~ Paediatric Nutritionist Mandy Sacher
ABOUT THE BOOK
Wholesome Child is a nutritional guide, recipe book and menu planner all in one. It is the only resource parents will need to transition their children from processed foods to a healthy and nutritious diet. It offers simple and effective steps which all families can achieve – no matter what stage of their health journey. The book demystifies food and nutrition and addresses the "how" and “why” we should be feeding our children the right foods from the start. Why worry about gluten if your child is not celiac? Why be concerned if your child eats the same three vegetables over and over? How much sugar is too much and what amount is healthy? What is the difference between good fats and bad fats?
The Wholesome Child book is quite simply a wellness bible and the only resource you will need to feed your family right from the start!

Each step provides practical information and easy to follow methods - moving to a more wholegrain diet, or ways of reducing refined sugar - even if you’re already on a journey towards healthier living and now want to take things to the next level, the steps presented in this book will help you!
- More than 120 delicious, nutrient-dense recipes that are easy to make and packed full of goodness. Each recipe has been carefully formulated to maximise its nutrient value, tried and tested by my own family, from kids through to grandparents and everyone in between. Not to mention hundreds of my gorgeous clients and my “tester group” of fabulous mums who don’t pull any punches when it comes to feedback. Some of the highlights include healthy versions of family favourites such as meatballs, mac n’ cheese and chicken nuggets, to making decadent gluten-free chocolate brownies using black beans instead of flour and delicious tomato sauce without the unnecessary refined sugar.
- An A-Z guide to family nutrition that is suitable for every parent, no matter where you’re at in your health journey. All the information contained in this book will help you find new ways of improving your family’s health and eating habits, by providing serious strategies for dealing with fussy eating such as engaging in “food play”, methods on talking to your kids about food and their bodies, a guide on how to read food labels and avoid preservatives and other hidden nasties... and much much more.

I’m Mandy Sacher, a certified paediatric nutritionist and SOS feeding consultant. Through my seminars and private clinical practice I have helped thousands of families improve their health and wellbeing by implementing practical and attainable dietary goals, setting them and their children on the road to healthier, happier lives. I am a busy working mum and know what it’s like trying to juggle the work/life balance while ensuring everyone gets nutritious, home-cooked meals - including fussy family members. My nutritional recommendations are practical and easy to follow, and my recipes are delicious and quick to prepare, perfect for time poor parents.
I was inspired to begin this journey by my brother, who was obese as a child. Being affected by how unhappy he was, and how his condition was destroying his self-esteem, I promised myself that I would help to ensure that other children did not have to go through this experience and ended up co-developing the original MEND Programme, designed to support obese children and their families to live fitter, healthier and happier lives. Along with my colleagues I developed one of the world’s only proven weight management treatments for obese children, now based on 15 years of research and clinical trials. Obesity and poor health is one of the leading social issues facing our children today, and feeding them healthy, wholesome food is the best way to prevent it.

ABOUT WHOLESOME CHILD
Wholesome Child came about just after the birth of my son, in 2010, when my professional expertise combined with a desire to feed my children the most nutritious, delicious food possible. Never before have we had access to such a wide variety of foods, but equally, never has choosing which food we feed our children been so confusing, yet important! Pre-packaged foods that are advertised as healthy options rarely are, so I am hugely passionate about helping mums make the best choices for their families. Good health starts in the home, and there is no better gift you can give your children.

Wholesome Child intends to build strong, resilient children and to give them the best insurance against disease – healthy eating and a positive relationship with food. By combining proper nutrition and guiding parents on how to establish positive connections with food, their bodies and exercise we are building long lasting foundations.
ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN
I strongly believe that inadequate and poor nutrition is the single biggest cause of conditions such as obesity and diabetes. This is why I launched this campaign in conjunction with National Diabetes Week (July 10-16). Diabetes is a rapidly growing condition that currently affects one in 11 people worldwide. Type 2 diabetes represents 85–90 percent of all cases of diabetes and is increasingly occurring in younger age groups, including children, adolescents and young adults.
Although there is a strong genetic predisposition, the risk of having diabetes is greatly increased when associated with lifestyle factors such as high blood pressure, being overweight or obese, having insufficient physical activity and a poor diet. Diabetes has been called a “silent pandemic” and with good reason. Australia is ranked 7th highest in the world for prevalence of type 1 diabetes in children aged 0-14 years and 6th highest for incidence. Adding to this, there is a growing number of children and adolescents who are now affected by type 2 diabetes. Diabetes also puts a huge financial strain on our health system, not to mention the quality of people’s lives. The total annual cost for people with type 2 diabetes in Australia is estimated at $6 billion and $570 million for people with type 1 diabetes. It is a massive, serious and huge social problem, and this is what the Wholesome Child 8-step program is helping to address.
So many parents struggle to get their kids to eat the foods that are essential for optimum growth and development. The Wholesome Child book contains an eight-step guide that offers parents and caregivers simple strategies to encourage fussy children to enjoy nutritious and delicious foods and explore new tastes.
This is where you come in.
With your help, we can make this project a reality and reach many more families, helping them change to a healthier lifestyle – but we need to raise $45,000 and there are lots of ways you can get involved.
This may seem like a lot, but essentially it just covers the cost of a print run for the first 1,500 books.
So where is the money going? Most of the funds will be spent on printing costs, warehousing and shipping, as well as Kickstarter fees. The rest will go towards modest remuneration for my highly experienced team - including photography, design work, editing, research and groceries for recipe testing and shooting.
If we reach our goal of $45,000 we can print 1,500 books and will break even. If we can raise more than our goal, we can print more books! Ultimately I’d love to print 3,000 or even 5,000 copies, and allow even more families to benefit from the guidance in the Wholesome Child book and enjoy its delicious and nutritious meals that kids love to eat.

THE DREAM TEAM
Mandy Sacher is a qualified paediatric nutritionist, SOS Feeding Consultant, MINDD Practitioner and mum of two. Her clinical practice focuses on prenatal and childhood nutrition, helping parents and mums-to-be feed their children healthy, nourishing foods right from the start. In 2006, she, along with other paediatric experts, co-founded the MEND Program – an independent, not-for-profit organisation established to research (and prevent) obesity in children. Mandy and her colleagues at MEND developed one of the world’s only proven weight-loss treatments for obese children, based on 15 years of research and clinical trials. Mandy also an inspirational, motivational public speaker and advocate for children's health, and conducts regular workshops on key aspects of children’s nutrition, which have had hundreds of people attending. Feedback from her seminars is always inspiring and heartwarming and keeps Mandy striving to help more families on their journeys towards better health.
Nadine Rubin Nathan began her career in 1995 as a health writer for Cosmopolitan South Africa. Four years later she was appointed editor-in-chief of Elle magazine. After relocating to New York in 2004, Rubin Nathan was an editor at Harper's Bazaar and The New York Post and wrote for The New York Times. She has an MA in Journalism from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. Nadine now lives in Auckland, New Zealand with her husband and two young daughters - both fussy eaters - and enjoys experimenting on them with Wholesome Child recipes, often successfully. She is actively involved in writing of the Wholesome Child book, and overseeing its publication. Nadine is responsible for researching, developing and editing the Wholesome Child book, courses and seminar content.
Sandra Bendersky is a qualified nutritionist, product designer, food photographer, wife and mum. Sandra has always been a food lover and is passionate about cooking and baking. Sandra graduated from a specialist art high school in Austria, then studied Nutrition Sciences in Vienna. During this time she worked in restaurants and her love for creating interesting, healthy and nutritious dishes developed. Sandra shares her creativity, knowledge and passion for styling food on her blog bondiliciousnutritious.com. Sandra helps test and develop the delicious and unique recipes that satisfy the nutritional profile and requirements for Wholesome Child’s healthy childhood eating standard.
Kerry Alice, after hanging up her dancing shoes 23 years ago, Kerry was fortunate to stumble across her passion for design. She has spent most of that time fine tuning her design skills on countless magazines and print projects. Being equally passionate about health and nutrition and its undeniable effect on your wellbeing and quality of life, she didn't hesitate to jump on board the Wholesome Child train. Kerry is responsible for the design and layout of the Wholesome Child book.
Nicola Conville is a freelance health and lifestyle journalist with more than 15 years’ experience. She has worked for a wide variety of print and online publications including body+soul, Men’s Fitness, Women’s Health, Kidspot, Mother & Baby and Coles Baby & Toddler, to name a few. Her areas of speciality include health and wellbeing, travel, lifestyle and parenting. Nicola is the content editor for Wholesome Child and is involved in everything from writing digital content for the website to research and development and fact-checking for the Wholesome Child book. Nicola is a mum to two gorgeous kids and loves trying out the Wholesome Child recipes with them.
Risks and challenges
There's always the possibility of underestimating the actual budget. Delays in the book release date can sometimes occur. Not printing enough books in the first run could be a possibility and not estimating shipping costs when shipping worldwide.
