Artists in Storefronts goal is to expand to more than double the current size of the existing Whittier Artists in Storefronts project.

Artists in Storefronts seeks to inspire community engagement, revitalize neighborhoods, and stimulate the local economy by bringing art to the walkable urban landscape.  Through community and neighborhood support, we connect vacant and under-used commercial storefronts with local artists to turn the spaces and facades into mini-galleries that provide everyone with equal access to art and an opportunity to engage with it in unique ways.

Our pilot project in the Whittier neighborhood has been met with much success, opening on April 27th and running through June 9th as we participate in Northern Spark to close our run.

Fourteen artists from various disciplines and mediums created public exhibitions in vacant and under-used commercial spaces in and along the Eat Street commercial corridor. More than 25 spaces, facades, and points of interest are now public art projects in this unique Minneapolis neighborhood.
We also took on ambitious street art projects, including Candy Chang's "Before I Die" interactive chalk wall; an over 60-foot-long moss graffiti mural; and “yarn bombing” an elementary school facade. Our six-week run of walking tours also includes existing murals and areas of artistic merit.

Our goal is to utilize the success of this pilot project and create another "call to artists" that would expand the current Artists in Storefronts project boundaries to include the east side of Lyndale Avenue and other points along Franklin Avenue and Lake Street, more than doubling the current pilot within the Whittier neighborhood. We also wish to source both a site and proposals for a public mural and/or an outdoor sculpture to include in the expanded project.

Artists in Storefronts utilizes a “benefit all” strategy. Local artists are granted public exhibition space, press, and promotional materials. The neighborhood is beautified and art becomes accessible to all members of the community. Property owners of vacant commercial spaces receive free staging services via the exhibits to better solicit independent retailers and creative entrepreneurs.

Your donation will help fund administrative costs, promotion, outreach, materials, and more, and help promote creativity, revitalize neighborhoods, and inspire community engagement.

A $50 donation can purchase 100 of Candy Chang's "I Wish This Was" vinyl stickers to use on storefronts that are unable to participate due to foreclosure. These stickers are a fun, low-barrier way for citizens to provide civic input on-site, and the responses reflect the hopes, dreams, and colorful imaginations of different neighborhoods. They are custom vinyl and can be easily removed without damaging property.
