Jason Steele New Quartet – Music for Philippe Petit
French high-wire artist Philippe Petit grabbed global headlines in 1974 when he walked between the then-under-construction Twin Towers of New York’s World Trade Center. I’m working to tell the story of this historic feat in an instrumental jazz format. From the tremendous advance preparation, to the walk itself, to his ultimate arrest, Music for Philippe Petit will capture the emotion of this story.
I was first inspired to write music about Philippe Petit after watching a Man on Wire and reading his book, To Reach The Clouds, both of which outlined the events Petit’s historic walk. I invite you to watch Man On Wire when you have a chance. It’s a truly inspiring story.
Each track on the album will create a unique mood that’s consistent with Petit’s planning, execution and, of course, consequences of his actions. A truly unique concept jazz album.
Working with my group, The Jason Steele New Quartet, I’ve already spent two days in the studio recoding seven of the eleven tracks I’ve written. The Quartet is comprised of trumpet, upright bass, violin, and guitar. The outcome was fantastic, and I’m anxious to finish and release the new album by Spring 2013. Through your contributions, I will be able to record the remaining tracks, then mix, master, and duplicate the music to achieve the level of quality this tribute to Petit deserves. The recording will be the first of a series of recordings I’m planning for this group.
