"You leave a piece of you and your soul in a record - it will be there forever"*
If you hail from Los Angeles, you have probably heard of George Kahn, a "West Coast" jazz pianist that has been putting out albums since 1998 featuring some of L.A.'s best musicians. George's goal has always been to put out quality music that is heartfelt, emotional and swinging.
Now, for the first time, George is releasing a Piano Trio CD with two other wonderful LA-based musicians, Alex Acuna on drums and Lyman Medeiros on bass. You may have seen Lyman playing with Steve Tyrell or Dianne Schuur, and you have undoubtedly heard Alex when he played with Weather Report, Herbie Hancock or on numerous film scores.
The new album will feature many contemporary songs that you might not expect to hear in a jazz style, plus new originals by George. Here is the the Trio playing their version of Prince's THIEVES IN THE TEMPLE
Here are the first four audio tracks, a sample of what you will hear when we complete the album with your pledge:
"To improvise is to be in the moment but in the studio that one moment equals eternity"
Making a jazz record is like trying to catch lightning in a bottle: we have all the songs picked out, the charts written, and we have played them live countless times - but the magic happens when we go into the studio and combine all our planning and preparation with spontaneous interaction and improvisation. So far the trio has recorded 4 songs in the studio, but we need your support to finish the album. Yes, this project has the secret sauce - it is going to be more than the sum of its parts. We want YOU to be part of the magic.
"The sound of the music...is really the greatness of being a human being"*
Now you have a chance to become part of the creation of this album: by pledging money to make it happen. In return, you get to choose a variety of rewards. There are all kinds of fun things, from an autographed copy of our new CD, to a live house concert, to a visit to the recording session - so join us!
Great jazz albums don't grow on trees
You can't make a top-quality album performed by the best musicians in Los Angeles for free! Unlike previous albums where we looked for investors to help us, we decided to use Kickstarter. Here is a brief breakdown of the costs involved in the album project:
- Conservatively, we feel that $9,997 will get it done. If we raise more, we can do some radio promotion, book ourselves into a better studio, or record additional songs!. That would be awesome! Rest assured, every penny will go into making this the best project possible, and bringing it to the most people.
*Thanks, Jaco Pastoius, for the quotes!

Not Sure Which Reward to Choose? May I suggest the "BAR IS OPEN" Coaster and CD Combo for $75
More About The House Party for $100
The coolest reward is our House Party on Sunday August 6 from 4:00 - 6:00 PM at a location in West Los Angeles (TBA). You and 30 of our biggest fans will get to be up-close and personal with George, Lyman and Alex. We'll have food and drink - it will be a party! You can sit at Alex's feet (literally) and feel the vibrations. Here are a couple of video samples to give a sense of excitement
Risks and challenges
What Makes This Different From All Other Kickstarter Projects?
Most Kickstarter album projects are set so that after you pledge, the band goes in the studio, they promise to deliver by a certain date - blah blah blah. You wait and hope to hear some music someday.
Not with the George Kahn Trio! We have already recorded the first 4 songs from the album (complete with videos). You can see and hear the excitement and feel comfortable that when you help us complete our project you will have the swinging-est album ever.
This is George's 9th album, and his second Kickstarter project. Here is a link to George's first successful project in 2014 (CD produced on time and on budget!)
