About this project
7/09/14 - update #5 We have had a little change in our rewards. I just found out that due to copyright and use rules we are not allowed to send out copies of the Live at LACMA broadcast. We cannot even give it away! So everything else in the backer rewards holds true, but the best we can do for you is to come up with a way for you to listen to the LACMA radio broadcast. We're working on that, but in the meanwhile we are already rehearsing for our studio session on July 22 and 23rd! Can't wait!
7/08/14 - Update #4 We are on the verge of hitting $19,000 now. Thank you for believing in the Jazz & Blues Revue - we know you will not be disappointed. We are so thrilled that you believed in our project and we can't wait to share our music with you. To celebrate the completion of our Kickstarter campaign, we are performing LIVE in concert for one night only, this Thursday, July 10 in Studio City, CA.
There are two sets, 8:00 PM and 9:30 PM. Both sets will feature virtually all the players for the recording: Courtney Lemmon, Gina Saputo and Crystal Starr on vocals, George on piano, Dr. Bobby Rodriguez on trumpet, Lyman Medeiros on bass, M.B. Gordy on drums, and special guest Brent Canter on guitar.
The cover charge is only $15.00. Please call to reserve your seat - Vitello's is a small, intimate dinner room, and it may sell out! Call for reservations : 818.769.0905 Vitellos is located at 4349 Tujunga Avenue, Studio City, CA 91604
7/07/14 - Update #3 Wow Wow Wow! we broke through our goal today, thanks to two fans that bought the House Concert Package. Here is a short video I took today at the studio where we are going to record our album!
And here's a little look inside - you still have 3 days left to pledge at the $499 level, and get to join us in the studio as we record our Jazz & Blues Revue album later this month!
7/06/14 - Update #2 - $2100 away from our goal, it is time to start the party! Please enjoy "Yes We Can Can" from the LIVE AT LACMA radio broadcast
6/26/14 - Update #1 - This is why we decided to Play Big!
If you hail from Los Angeles, you probably have heard of the George Kahn Jazz & Blues Revue. The band was formed about 5 years ago to do benefit concerts in Los Angeles: a 5 piece jazz band fronted by three incredible singers (Courtney Lemmon, Gina Saputo and Crystal Starr) that can do everything from the Andrew Sisters to The Pointer Sisters, Herbie Hancock, Billy Holiday, Etta James and everything in between.
Each time we perform people ask for our album, so we decided NOW'S THE TIME and we are ready to put out the debut album of the George Kahn Jazz & Blues Revue. Now you can help us do it, and get some fabulous rewards as a thank you!
THE "SECRET SAUCE"
Making a jazz record is like trying to catch lightning in a bottle - we have all the songs picked out, the charts are written, and we have played them live countless times - but the magic happens when we go into the studio and combine all our planning and preparation with spontaneous interaction and improvisation. George Kahn has released 7 albums, and each of the singers has recorded on their own, but this project has the "secret sauce" - it is going to be more than the sum of its parts. We want YOU to be part of the magic.
WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU?
Now you have a chance to become part of the creation of this album by pledging money to make it happen. In return, you get to choose a variety of "rewards". For a sample of what we do, listen to this version of "Cantaloupe Island" from the "Live at LACMA" radio broadcast:
In addition, you can choose to get all kinds of fun things, from an autographed copy of our new CD, to dinner with George, to a visit to the recording session, to having us come to YOUR house and do a Jazz & Blues Revue show for you and your guests.
GREAT JAZZ ALBUMS DON'T GROW ON TREES
To release a top-quality album of 13 songs performed by the best musicians in Los Angeles costs money! Unlike previous albums where we looked for investors to help complete the album, we have decided to use Kickstarter. "Where does all this money go", you ask? Here is a brief breakdown of some of the costs involved in the album project:
PROPOSED BUDGET –
- Musicians (8 of the best Los Angeles Studio cats!)
- Hard dives and digital backup of recording
- Studio time-recording sessions. 4-5 days
- Mixing and mastering 3-4 days
- Photography, videography, art direction
- CD production and pressing
- Licensing fees (all our songs are "cover" tunes, which require licensing)
- Domestic and international distribution.
- Kickstarter fee: 5% of funded project
- Amazon: 5% of funded project (credit card fees)
- Conservatively, we feel that $18,000 will get it done. if we raise more, we can do a music video and some radio promotion!. That would be awesome! Rest assured, every penny will go into making this the best project possible, and bringing it to the most people.
Risks and challenges
WHAT MAKES THIS DIFFERENT FROM ALL OTHER KICKSTARTER PROJECTS?
Most Kickstarter album projects are set up where you pledge, we go in the studio, we promise to deliver by a certain date, blah blah blah. You wait and hope to hear some music some day.
Not with the Jazz & Blues Revue! Last summer we performed an inspiring show for about 2000 people at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and had the pleasure of the show being broadcast on local jazz station KKJZ (88.1FM). As a special "Thank You" to everyone that pledges, we will set up a listening party for George Kahn Jazz & Blues Revue Live at LACMA radio broadcast. This will ONLY be available to our Kickstarter fans.
Its a win-win-win situation! If we DON'T hit our goal, you pay nothing. If we DO hit our goal, you'll get to hear the radio broadcast, and then around the end of the year you will have the pleasure of getting the completed studio album! WOW!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
I hear you are having trouble with the Kickstarter website.
You do not need a Facebook account. You will need to sign up on Kickstarter to make a pledge.
Once you are on the Kickstarter website:
1)Click on the "Sign Up" button in the top right of the screen.
2) Put in your name (any name will do)
3) Put in your real email address
4) Re-enter your real email address
5)CREATE A UNIQUE KICKSTARTER PASSWORD. It should be at least 6 characters. Write it down - you will need your password to log in to your Kickstarter account in the future
6) re-enter your password
7) Click the Green "Sign Me up!" button
THAT'S IT! You are ready to go.
Once you make a pledge on our kickstarter page, it will take you to Amazon.com and will use your Amazon.com account and credit card info. If you DO NOT have an Amazon account, you will need to set one up.
If this is ALL TOO CONFUSING email me, and I can arrange to accept a check or cash... email@example.com
Yes, you do need to set one up. It's really easy, and you don't need to put in any personal information to create the Kickstarter account
Kickstarter uses Amazon.com for their "back office", so if you already have an Amazon account, you do not need to input a credit card to pledge! Kickstarter takes you directly to your Amazon log in, and then you will pledge using the secure information you have given Amazon.com
Your credit card will not be charged until we hit our goal AND our campaign ends on July 11. Until then, you can come back and increase your pledge any time you want!
I don't use credit cards, but i want to be part of the project and pledge to help your project. What can I do?
click on the "Contact Me" button right below the "Back This Project" button near the top of the page. We'll work it out!
