Grey Fox Games is excited to present City of Gears, an award winning area control game by Chris Leder and Daryl Andrews that was previously scheduled to be a part of the prestigious Dice Tower Essentials line.
In City of Gears, you and up to three friends compete to uncover and develop an abandoned, overgrown steampunk metropolis. Whoever can use their resources and automaton workers to earn the most Prestige when Opening Day comes will go down in history as the founder of the City of Gears.
City of Gears starts with 9 random city tiles placed in a 3x3 grid face down, waiting to be discovered. With 18 different tiles, no two games are ever the same.
On their turn, players roll resource dice to gain Gears, Steam and Charges. Gears are used to either give yourself new powers or to make new connections that help you gain access to and control over new parts of the city (see example below).
Steam can be used to deploy your automaton workers to city tiles.
Charges can either rapidly move your workers around the city or can be used to destroy opponents' gear links or send opponents' workers back to their factory.
Workers on building tiles can activate buildings in the City of Gears, earning clever players a chain reaction of benefits (see example below).
Once the city is uncovered, Opening Day creeps closer and development speeds up in the city. The game will end immediately once the third Opening Day gear is drawn from the bag.
Players who control parts of the city when Opening Day hits will earn extra Prestige. Whoever has the most Prestige wins!
If you are new to Kickstarter, the add-ons are the most confusing thing in terms of pledging since they do not work on a "cart" system like everything else does on the internet. In order to "purchase" an Add-on, simply add the cost of the add-on(s) you would like to your pledge amount.
Example 1: You live in the US and want to add-on the Juggernaut. You simply add $10 to your pledge amount as there is no charge for shipping for this add-on.
Example 2: You live in Taiwan and you chose the Founders Pledge and would like to add another copy of the Founders Edition and two Juggernaut add-ons. You would add an additional $59 for the game, $2 for shipping and $10 for each Juggernaut, increasing your pledge by $81.
At some point after the campaign, we will send you an email with a link to the pledge manager, in here you will "spend" that extra money you pledged letting us know what add-ons you wanted before we ship your stuff.
While we would love to offer free shipping, there really is no such thing. Shipping is really expensive and we have tried to come up with pricing that accurately reflects our cost to get the game into your hands without creating a logistical nightmare on our side. We expect that we'll have to come out of pocket a bit based on what we are charging and we are ok with that.
We will also be using non-trackable shipments in some cases in order to save on cost as tracking can add 30-50% or more in some cases. So please understand if we do not have tracking with your package we did so knowingly. Rest assured, that we will get you your game and any risk associated with a package not being trackable is on us.
While we would love to get everyone their games at the same time, it is just not possible. There is a high likelihood that some areas of the world will get their games before others. Our commitment is to get the games ready and printed as fast as possible (we've already done a ton of the prep work). At the factory we will break out the shipments to each fulfillment company with instructions to them that they should begin shipping as soon as possible upon receipt. In addition, because we have complete control over the U.S. shipments, you will not be able to order and receive the game on Amazon (or from any other US retailer) before our backers have it.
Lastly, we will be using fulfillment companies in different parts of the world and while we have done our best to ensure we pick good ones, ultimately, once the games get into their warehouses there is little control we have at that point. We have always done our best to bend over backwards for our customers and if for some reason there are any issues with damages, missing components or missing shipments we will make it right. It just might require some patience.
Why back this campaign?
While we have had great success with other games like Deception: Murder in Hong Kong and Champions of Midgard, we are still a relatively small company and we just do not have the funds needed to fund every project we do without some help. Your pledge gets you a discount off of the $59.99 MSRP planned for this title in the retail version or the exclusive Founders' edition of the game. It also gets you access to exclusive city tiles and any exclusive stretch goals we unlock that won't be available at retail. Plus, if you live in the U.S the game will be in your hands long before someone can get it from an online retailer. If you live outside the U.S, we will do our best to get it into your hands first. Also, pledging helps get us closer to making the first ever board gaming yacht, the Monochromatic Vulpine, a reality (just kidding about the yacht...or are we?).
Risks and challenges
As a publisher that has brought more than a dozen games to market thus far, we feel confident in our ability to get this done. The gameplay for this game is 99% complete. The art and graphics are well underway. We are confident that we will hit our release goals with no problems, shipping delays or Acts of God notwithstanding. In addition we will not release this game to standard retail until all U.S backers orders have been shipped. Our goal is to have it in our backers hands 1-3 weeks before someone can buy it on Amazon.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
