My name is River Devereux and I am a Christian filmmaker hoping to raise funds to make my second feature-length film, which is based on a 135-page screenplay I have written called 'After The End'.
To hear about more about my vision, check out this video:
'After The End' is about a youth-pastor named Brian who is dealing with the tragic loss of his wife who passed away two years ago. Despite his grief, Brian's faith in God has remained strong but this is viewed by his non-Christian family and friends as a sign that he never loved his wife in the first place, since they think that her death has not affected him.
In the midst of this, Brian starts to fall for a girl ten years younger than him called Anna, who has just come out of a divorce, and conflict is caused when her friends realize that she is going to Church and is seeing a youth-pastor.
As tensions and prejudices rise, and Brian realizes that Anna's marriage did not end due to adultery (cf. Matthew 5:31-32!), he starts to question if their new-found relationship is a good idea, and must decide between his convictions and his personal feelings.
And to make matters worse, a young, angry man named Vincent, is stirring up a scandal in regards to something that happened between him, the Church and a mysterious girl named Lily, and Brian finds himself in the center of this mess and has to sort it out.
The film deals primarily with how people deal with grief and loss differently depending on their belief systems and ultimately shows how the Christian concept of spiritual rebirth can be applied to grief.
Other issues such as why does God allow suffering and the place of Christianity in the 21st Century also arise.
An unfortunate reality is that even though films with Christian messages always perform very well commercially, they tend to be of a rather low quality in comparison to most other drama films. And as an audience, Christians are not catered to very well at all.
As an experienced filmmaker who has dedicated his life to serving the Lord, it is my hope and calling to make high-quality artistic drama films that depict the world realistically and deal with serious and meaningful issues with sensitivity and a Christian view.
And that is my goal with 'After The End'. With this film, I hope to engage adult audiences with strong and deep characters, a compelling and meaningful story and with high-quality artistic direction. I hope to craft a film where the quality of the screenplay, the acting, the direction, the cinematography and the soundtrack can stand proudly beside the best that drama films have to offer.
But as well as making a good film, my highest priority is to glorify God and spread His Gospel across the seas, so that anyone who watches 'After The End' will come away having gained an insight into His ways and into the truth.
All my life I have wanted to be a filmmaker, and due to the grace of God I have been living my dream now for three years.
I have an ATCL Diploma in Trinity College Drama and wrote/directed/produced/edited/shot my first feature film in 2016, called 'My Last Days' (screenshots below) and I have also worked as the cinematographer for two short-films.
I will be the film's Writer, Director, Cinematographer and Co-Editor while Adrian Peterson will be the film's Producer and Editor.
We also have a Sound Technician, Makeup Artist and Costume Designer attached to the project.
'After The End' has eight speaking roles and is set entirely in Auckland, NZ. The film will be shot using a Canon 5D Mark III with Sigma Art lenses.
Pre-Production for 'After The End' will begin in early January. We will spend two months casting actors, scouting locations and sending out the rewards from our campaign.
The Production will begin in March and will take two weeks to film.
Post-Production will begin after the shoot and we hope to have the film completed in late July 2018.
The budget for our film's production is 28,000 NZD.
We have already made $10,000 through investments and are now on KickStarter looking to make the remaining $18,000, which will be what we receive from the $20,000 we are asking for, since 10% of the earnings go towards KickStarter and other fees.
The remaining $18,000 will be divided as follows:
These are of course subject to change and are a guideline only.

Risks and challenges
The biggest risk our production faces is the potential difficulty of finding talented actors who will be able to make convincing and emotive performances from our admittedly complex and difficult characters. Alongside that risk, is the unfortunate fact that many quality actors may not be comfortable acting in a film with a strongly Christian message.
To overcome this challenge, we have given ourselves plenty of time to find and cast actors before our Production begins and we will place the sheer ability of the actors over all other considerations when casting.
