The history of ican!

This project started out with a friend of mine asking my opinion on one of the online beverage coolers that sells for $20-40 a pop. As a veteran thermal engineer I could tell that those products won't work. I told my friend that it will have to sell for about $150 for something that really works, and I didn't think anyone would pay that much for a gadget that they think they can get for $20. He encouraged me to consider developing a real cooler and believed that people will be willing to pay for something that is well ENGINEERED and really works reliably. 

So I set off designing ican! 1.0 back in 2010. My goal was trying to design a device that cost as low as possible without sacrificing performance. I ordered most of the parts, built the core of the prototype. The core worked fine, but the housing looked unappealing. I realized that it would be hard to use as it was designed. See the picture of ican 1.0 below.

 After I scrapped ican! 1.0, I have been working on ican! 2.0 in the past 4 years and I think I have finally optimized everything and it is ready for prime time. I have changed the philosophy from cost driven to usability driven, and have also incorporated features for ican! being used in cars. 

ican! 2.0 measures 180mm x 105mm x 46mm (7.1in x 4.2in x 1.8in); it can hold cups or bottles up to 3.66in (93mm) diameter. I have built a complete prototype as seen in the video.  With cup holder, the size reduces to 3.4in (87mm) diameter. The color of ican! and th cup holder will be Pantone 427C grey, the most common color for office products.  The metal platform that heat or cools your drink will be royal blue.

What will you get: ican! the beverage cooler and the power supply that powers ican! Just plug and play! Select COOL  (slide the switch to left), or OFF (middle position of the switch) or HEAT (slide the switch to right).

 ican! 2.0 has features for inserting an optional cup holder. It is particularly useful for using in cars. The cup holder has 3 clips that will clip into the housing securely, and it can clock in 6 positions for users to place the cup handle at the desired orientation.

 ican! 2.0 uses 12/VDC power, which is the car's battery voltage. We will look into designing a car adapter for ican! after this project is successfully funded.

ican! fulfillment plan

We have all the sourcing of components ready. Tool makers are ready to roll. We are sourcing those commodity components from Asia to minimize cost, and sourcing few key components that are essential to ican!'s performance and reliability in US; the fund raised is for paying for tooling cost and material cost for the units. The parts cost is significant because of few critical-to-performance components (they cost more than what you pay for those stuff that don't work!). The assembly process is relatively straightforward, except few proprietary cue schedules that take quite bit of time. The parts cost dominate the cost of ican! 

We will build them in the Seattle area where we call home, not overseas. The main motivation of this choice is for retaining the intellectual property and keep the jobs in US. The attainment of the performance is dependent on the design, the components and the assembly process. Building ican! in US will minimize the risk of leaking our assembly recipe to copycats. 

The campaign will start in 2015 and lasts 2 months. We chose the longest allowed campaign duration to allow the words to get out. The tooling will take 2 months to complete from the end of the campaign. First article build (10 engineering prototypes) will start May 1st and complete mid May. Minor updates to tooling will complete by end of May. Fulfillment build will start one week into June and complete before end of June. 

Risks and challenges

We have built a complete prototype that represents the final design of ican! 2.0. We have added few improvements to the design enhancing the manufacturability but have no impact on the design and performance. We don't foresee any design cliches that may cause major delays.
We have 3 tool makers to choose from and they all are well established enterprises with years of experience producing this kind of components. The off-the-shelf components are all mature and readily available from multiple sources. So we view the component sourcing risk is low.
We are setup to produce thousands a year not expecting overwhelming demands because of the high cost. We will risk delaying fulfillment if the response overwhelms our capacity. Fortunately we will know this before the campaign finishes, so that we will have at least 3 months to ramp up our capacity. So if this does occur, we expect some initial delays but will catch up early enough for everyone to have their ican! before the holidays.

We will be closely monitoring the campaign and provide updates of our plan to our backers.

    If for any unforeseeable reason that the 10 first articles didn't meet our performance expectations, we will make any adjustments necessary and start another iteration of first articles. So as long as this project is funded, we will build 10 pilot units prior to mass production.
