About this project
Hydro-Anthem will span the length of the iconic Blue Bridge, a pedestrian bridge in downtown Grand Rapids, MI. The work will be a unique and immersive experience for those walking across the bridge as well as those viewing it from various perspectives throughout the city. Bright colors and playful abstract forms will flank the sides of the bridge, creating a “tunnel” of light, shadow, color, and movement.
The forms depicted are loosely based on concepts related to the history of the river as well as its present life---including steamboat travel, hydro-electric power, and native fish and wildlife. Each of the four sections of the historic bridge will be a unique stanza comprised of a slightly different configuration of forms. Viewers who walk the expanse of the work will enjoy subtle changes in color, light, shadow, and movement.
In order to create the exciting, immersive experience described....I need to buy large quantities of durable outdoor fabric. I've been working on the project for some time now, and have enough fabric to complete two sections of the bridge. My goal is to address as much of the bridge as possible, while also meeting new demands by the City of Grand Rapids in relation to materials, an armature, and supervision by a construction crew. In order to fully address the challenges of such a large public project, I need your help!
In addition to fabric, I'll need hardware to fasten the work to the bridge's structure as well as money for travel to install the work. With your support, I can make this project truly spectacular. THANK YOU.
Risks and challenges
I have a history of successfully completing ambitious, large-scale projects. You can see examples of my previous projects on my website (www.lizmiller.com). I've done extensive research for this project, and am working with the city to address potential issues related to the installation.
Although the project was selected and approved months ago, I have faced some obstacles with the city permitting process. The city has repainted the Blue Bridge over the summer, and is, as they put it, "hyper-concerned" that the paint remain undamaged. I am doing my best to work with them to address those concerns. Unfortunately, it has resulted in significant additional time and expense on my part. But I remain optimistic that I can come up with solutions that will meet their approval and am moving forward!!!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
