My name is Nelson Campbell. I am the Director of PlantPure Nation, an exciting new documentary that explores the history, economics and politics surrounding the plant-based diet. For the first time ever, this film answers the question so many people ask when they first learn of this amazing health concept: Why haven't I heard this before?
I have had a longtime interest in this health message, largely because of my dad, Dr. T. Colin Campbell (The China Study), considered by many to be the 'science father' of the rapidly growing plant-based nutrition movement. I’ve watched him answer this nagging question over the years, and this film finally gave us an opportunity to shed light on the powerful forces standing in the way of this message.
With the veteran team of producer John Corry and writer Lee Fulkerson of the acclaimed documentary Forks Over Knives, we are taking the conversation about plant-based nutrition beyond the science. We are asking some important questions about its acceptance within mainstream society.
Your funding support will enable us to release the documentary in at least 20 more cities in North America, and to complete the development of a program that will make our film as experiential as possible. That program will enable people who watch the film to experience the core health concept, including both education and whole food, plant-based meals.
For too long, the people and organizations profiting from our poor health have controlled the information given to the public. Most people have no idea of the enormous control they have over their health. The only way to reach these people in an environment controlled by special interests is through a grassroots, bottom-up approach.
In addition to the film, we have developed an organizational structure and strategy, including a strong non-profit component, that will enable us to organize and support community groups everywhere in bringing the message of plant-based nutrition to family, friends and neighbors. This effort will demonstrate how millions of people working together at the local level can solve one of the most serious problems of our time. (See our website at www.plantpurenation.com)
We also have a companion cookbook from BenBella Books featuring delicious recipes I know well (since they were developed by my wife, Kim, who has been cooking plant-based for the past 25 years). This full-color, 320-page cookbook is a featured reward in levels over $70.
Our fundraising goal is $150,000, but we hope to surpass this and raise enough funds to bring our film to as many cities as possible, not only in the U.S. and Canada, but in other countries as well!
We will undertake a tour to 23 cities across North America from April 4th to June 10th before returning to those same 23 cities the week of July 4th.
At each stop, we will screen an advance cut of the film, and then hold a Q&A that includes our production team, my father and me. We also will work with local people and groups to secure their help in spreading the word within their community that we are coming back, so that we can fill theaters during our premier week of July 4th.
If we have sufficient funding we can extend this tour into the summer and fall to include more cities. We also would like to conduct screenings to get the ball rolling in other countries as well.
Risks and challenges
Our main risk is funding. We need the resources to complete development of the aforementioned program that will accompany our film. We hope to bring our film to market, as aggressively as possible, to at least 20 more cities across the U.S. and Canada.
But having funds is not the only solution to our marketing challenge. We also need the right strategy. We have chosen a strategy that recognizes the fact that we cannot do this on our own. We need supporters in communities everywhere who share our vision.
This Kickstarter campaign will help us build that team.
